Caperton Exchange Hotel Richmond, Va. Union, December 22, 1849 Dear Allen: I received yours of 27th this evening and I immediately went out to Elmwood and informed Harriet and the family that you would not be at home during the holidays. They were very much disappointed. Last Thursday the snow fell about eight inches deep. And the weather has been very disagreeable ever since. I sent out to the University this evening for the wagons and hands to come in and fill the Ice House. If the Rev. I.D. Shanklin will permit them to come in the morning we will be able to get your Ice House filled with very clear pretty ice. I will make all the necessary inquiries of Shanklin in the morning relative to his funding himself and family. And let you know by the next mail. I think it is better for you that he should fund himself, if you can make satisfactory arrangements with him as to the manner of paying him. Old Oliver Ewing out at the foot of the Nobs is dead. He died last Friday. His will was proven on Monday. He left everything to his sister Fanny during her life and after her death to his brother’s children. The Widow McClanahan of Lewisburg is dead. On Monday night William Adair executed a Deed of Trust to John Echols for three of the notes due to Campbell’s boys. John Echols and A.A. Chapman trustees. He gave it upon all of his land, about 1638 acres and seven negroes which make the debts perfectly good. John Gray, Arch Hawkins brother- in -law wants to hire Little Ned. Will you hire him and if so at what price? Old John Shiray wishes to know on what terms he can get Hick for another year. I will try and hire Little Frances to Green Morgan tomorrow. Albert G. Pendleton of Giles wants to buy a Negro man. And Dunlap wants to buy a Negro man. Dunn of Lewisburg wants to buy some Negroes. William Feamster of Muddy Creek wants to buy some Negroes. There were two negro men sold at public sale on Monday belonging to the Estate of Andrew Nickel. They sold well, one of them sold for $700 and the other for $710. They were common field hands. Your very particular friend William H. French of Mercer sent over today for the $1000 you promised him. I sent it to him. Has McNeil paid for the cattle? How is his wife getting along? And are you his endorser yet? How is John H. Vawter? Give him my regards. John Echols will go to Lewisburg on Sunday to Court and from thence to Lexington. He will not be at home again before the 6th or 8th of January. Our Court will be on the 14th and we will start to Richmond on the 18th and reach Richmond (if nothing happens) on the 20th or 21st. If the Canal is open we will go by Lynchburg. There is to be a Ball at Lanius’ on Friday night. I will not go. I was told confidentially this evening that Lanius had proposed that Jacob and Joseph rent the Tavern. He said he intended to leave it and he wants him to rent in his stead. I think the change would be a good one, considering everything. Remember me to my acquaintances and friends. All well. Fanny joins me in love to you. Lewis E.
