Bell of the regiment commanded by Colonel Rawlings in the Maryland line, for the term of 3 years from 1776. Inscribed on the Roll of Virginia, at the rate of 8 Dollars per month, to commence the 18th of March 1824. Certificate of Pension issued the 19th of April 1824 and sent to the Hon. Wm. Smith, H. Rep. Arrears to 4th of Sept. 1824 - 42 weeks - 5 months -- $44.67 Dead: Letter to Hon. G. W. ???(Summ??), Aid to 10 July 1842. Paid at the Treasury under the Act of 6 April 1838 from 4 Sept. 1832 to 8 July 1833. Aft Notified 4th March 1842. ====================================================================== At the Court of quarter session held ------- for the County of Monroe at the courthouse on the 18th of March 1824 in the 48th year of the Commonwealth. John Ford aged 70 years in September last and who is a resident of Monroe County and State of Virginia, this day personally appeared in open court, being a court of record for the County of Monroe and being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that on the 3rd day of August 1776 he enlisted for three years in the army of the revolution on continental establishment as a private in Capt. Thomas Bell's Rifle Company in Montgomery County and State of Maryland who was attached to the Regiment commanded by Col. ???(M---y) Rawlings; that he was immediately afterwards appointed sergeant; that he served as a sergeant in said company until the 16th day of November 1776 when at Fort Washington the regiment was principally cut off and was taken prisoner; that Col. Rawlings, Major Anthony Williams, Capt. Thomas Bell were all taken prisoners; that he the said John Ford made his escape and came to Baltimore and there as sargeant joined the company commanded by Capt. ???(Calderwall) who was attached to the regiment commanded by Col. ???(Tebeckar) of Virginia line; that he served in said company eighteen months or two years; after that time he was attached to the 4th Maryland Regiment that was commanded by Josiah ???Seawell Hall; from that place he was sent to Pittsburg under the command of General Broadhead where he was again under the command of Thomas Bell, his former Capt. who acted as Col. at that time, at which place he got his discharge which was signed by Andrew ???(Faunaybele) who acted as Captain; and which discharged and sent to Baltimore in ?? got his back pay and at hath ??? ??? been returned to him. He states he was in the following actions during the war: the Battle of Monmouth, Germantown, Brandywine, Ironhill, ???(Cooches) Bridges, P???? near the white house on the road from Lancaster to Philadelphia where General Wayne commanded, and number of small skirmishes; that he is now infirm and in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the aid of his country; he hath a wife aged about 63 years who is infirm and almost helpless and also five sons and three daughters, they being of age have all left him; so that he has no family but himself and wife. In pursuant of an act of congress passed the 1st of May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my property, or any part thereof with intent thereby to diminish as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of congress entitled "An Act to Provide for Certain Persons Engaged in the Land and Naval Services of the United States in the Revolutionary War" passed on the 18th day of March 1818; and that I have not nor has any person in trust for ????, any property or security, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in this schedule hereto annoted and by me subscribed: twenty one horse beasts, three cows worth $64, one shovel plow $1.50, 3 ????$1.50, one falling axe ?sledge $2.25, two leather ??? $24, one chest, 4 plates, pot ??, 5 knives, 4 forks $7 and ?malluck, 4 ?brood hogs $1.75. I have no debt owing to me owe about 400 $50. I have no trade or particular occupation and any in such ??? circumstances as to be unable to support myself being afflicted with severe rheumatism.
