C.L. CROTTY Oct 20 ,1896 Az. Republican Newspaper C.L. Crotty, the stranger who was arrested Saturday on the charge of insanity is still confined in the county jail. The man's general appearance and actions do not indicate an unsound mind, but according to his own admission he is a murderer. He talks freely and incessantly on that subject but says he thinks he was justified in committing the deed. He says that he lives in West Virginia where he owns a large ranch. About a year ago he had some difficulty with a neighbor whom he killed. He will not however, say what the cause was for the murder. He as indicted for the crime but owing to the help of friends he fled from the country coming westward. He arrived here with a depleted exchequer and among strangers. His crime preyed on his mind for he realized that he would soon be penniless and his pride would not permit him to work amongst a class of people with whom he was not accustomed. He finally determined to surrender himself to the authorities and stand trial for his crime. He is a man apparently about 35 years of age and has an aristrcratic bearing, giving evidence of a cultured mind. He will be held in custody until the West Virignia authorities are heard from. October 24, 1896 Lee Crotty, the self confessed murderer is wanted by the authorities of Monroe County, West irignia. In answer to a telegram sent several days ago by Sheriff Orme the following was received yesterday: "Hold Crotty for requisition. Will send sheriff in a few days." The dispatch was signed by the district attorney of Monroe County. Another dispatch was received from the sheriff of the county saying that Crotty was wanted and sking if he would come without a requisition. Crotty was shown the dispatches and he said that he was willing to return home without a requisition. He will not talk about his crime and when asked if he would relate the particulars he became greatly agitated and acted like a demented person. The officers are inclined to the belief that the man has worried so much over his crime that his mind has become unbalanced. October 30, 1896 There seems to be a possibility that Lee Crotty, the self accused murderer will be allowed to go free without any efforts being made on his part. The sheriff of Monroe County, West Virginia, where Crotty is wanted, telegraphed Acting Governor Bruce that he could not leave there to come after the prisoner until after election and wanted to know whether the prisoner could be held until his arrival. The acting governor replied that if Crotty was not immediately sent for he would be released. November 3, 1896 Sheriff Hensberger of Monroe County West Virginia will arrive this afternoon with requisition papers for Lee Crotty the man now confined in the county jail on a charge of murder, which he is alleged to have committed in West Virignia. November 4, 1896 Sheriff Hansberger and Deputy B.C. Young of Monroe County, West Virignia rarived in Phoenix yesterday with a requisition for Lee Crotty, the man who surrendered imself to the authorities here for a murder he committed in West Virginia. From Sheriff Hansberger, a Republican reporter leanred that Crotty deliberately killed a man named Pauley on August 14 last. A feud had existed between the two men for some time and Crotty went to a wheat field where Pauley was working on a threshing machine and tried to pick a quarrel with him. Both men were armed, but Pauley made no attempt to resist Crotty. He merely raised his arm to push him away when Crotty pulled his revolver and shot Pauley who died five minutes later. Crotty wanted to give himself up, but upon the advice of his friends remained in hiding and finally left the country and came to Phoenix, where he surrendered. He said the crime worried him and he determined not to avoid paying the penalty of his crime. The sheriff said that Crotty was highly esteemed in Monroe County where he lived all his life. He has a wife and eleven children. A plea of insanity will be brought on his behalf.
