Three Duncan Family Obituaries, 1906-1954 - Monroe Co. WV (Submitter note: My name is Helen Morrissette Flagg of Houston, Texas. The following are the obituaries of my grandmother and grandfather and of my great grandfather, all of Waiteville, Monroe County, WV. I do not have the names of the papers in which these appeared.) Obituary of my great grandfather WILLIAM LAWSON DUNCAN The death of Mr. William Lawson Duncan, which occurred at his home near Waiteville, this county, on July 18, 1906, has already been briefly announced in these columns. His burial took place on the afternoon of the following day, in the cemetery surrounding the church near Waiteville, Rev. L.P. Bradley conducting the funeral services. Mr. Duncan was in the 85th year of his age. He was one of Monroe County's most sterling citizens and his long life was exemplary of the splendid virtues of rectitude, modesty and loving kindness. For many years he was a devoted member of the Christian Church, and he approached the grave with unfaltering faith. He was thrice married. His first wife was a Miss Susan Miller of Craig Co., his second a Miss Wiseman of this county, and his third wife, who preceded him to the tomb about three years ago, was a Miss Thurmond, a sister of Capt. Wm. Thurmond of Fayette County. His surviving children are Mrs. R.W. Bobbitt, Mrs. W.M. Bobbitt, and Mr. George Clifton Duncan of this county, Mrs. H.P. Bobbitt and Mrs. Augustus Dunbar of Greenbriar and Mrs. Paris Hall of Roanoke, Va. To them and to his country he has left the inestimable heritage of a good and useful life. Obituary of my grandfather GEORGE CLIFTON DUNCAN Mr. George Clifton Duncan, aged 84 years, 10 months and 15 days, died last Thursday night, April 1, 1937, at 8:40 at the home of his son, Mr. E.B. Duncan, near Sinks Grove. Mr. Duncan had enjoyed good health up until two weeks before his death when he became seriously ill with pneumonia and since then his condition had been grave. He was a native of Giles Co., Va., but while yet young moved to the Waiteville section of this county where most of his life was passed. He was married first to Miss Betty Minerva Hypes of Giles Co. by whom he was the father of two children. Following the death of his first wife, he was united in marriage to Miss India Minerva Williams of Giles Co., Va. and to them were born six children, five of whom survive. He was a loyal member of the Waiteville Methodist Church and was ever ready to take his part in beneficent causes. For nearly three years he had made his home with his son at Sinks Grove, and for two years prior to that he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. Charles Morrissette, at Charlottesville, Va. Wherever he resided, he won friends easily. Surviving are his widow and the following children: Mr. Hurxal H. Duncan of Bluefield, Mr. Raymond H. Duncan of Butler, Pa., Mr. William C. Duncan of Scottsville, Va., Mr. Edward B. Duncan of Sinks Grove, Mrs. Arthur A. Hartman of Athens, Mrs.C.B. Hedrick of Rochester, N.Y. and Mrs. Charles Morrissette, of Charlottesville, Va. Besides these children there are fifteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren. One daughter, Miss Thelma Frances Duncan, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Waiteville Methodist Church with Rev. J.E. McDonald in charge. Obituary of my grandmother INDIA MINERVA WILLIAMS DUNCAN (MRS. GEORGE CLIFTON DUNCAN) Mrs. India M. Duncan, aged 88, formerly of Waiteville, wife of the late Mr. George Clifton Duncan, died at the Andrew S. Rowan Memorial Home at Sweet Springs last Friday, Aug. 6, l954 after a long illness. She was born in Pembroke, Va., Giles Co., but had lived most of her life in this county. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Waiteville. Surviving her are two daughters and three sons, Mrs. A.A. Hartman of Athens and Mrs. Charles J. Morrissette of Charlottesville, Va.,Mr. Raymond H. Duncan of Butler, Pa., Mr. William C.. Duncan of Scottsville, Va., Mr. Hurxal H. Duncan of Bluefield, one stepson, Mr. E.B. Duncan of Union, and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Anna Hedrick, of Rochester, N.Y. Funeral services were held in Mt.Zion Church at Waiteville Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Hugh Cook and the Rev. W.R. Fullen officiating and burial was made in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Messrs. Porter LaFon, Berkeley LaFon, Carlos Duncan, Bill Hartman, Fred Furrow, and Pearley Surface.
