Obituary of Caleb Phillips - Monroe Co. WV Funeral services of CALEB PHILLIPS,who died Friday morning, were held at the Christian Church at 3 o'clock, Sunday afternoon. Rev. Gardner Miller, officiating, with interment in the Edison Cemetery. CALEB PHILLIPS, was born October 12, 1840 in Monroe County, West Virginia. He grew to manhood near Charleston, West Virginia. He enlisted in the 7th Virginia Cavalry Co.A, in 1861 and was in active duty during the war, serving in all, four years and twenty days. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Brown in Kanawha County,West Virginia, September 10, 1867. To this union were born seven children, one daughter dying in infancy. CALEB PHILLIPS and wife remained there for two years. They then moved to Cass County, Nebraska, in the fall of 1869, remaining there for five years. They then moved to Furnas County, and he spent the remainder of this life here. He departed this life, February 8, 1923 at the age of 82 years, 3 months, and 27 days. He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, Mrs. Sarah Phillips of this place, four sons, Ben Phillips of Arapahoe, Ed Phillips of Rockwell, Ia., Lib Phillips of Hastings, Ne., and Gilbert Phillips of Edison. Two daughters, Mrs. L. Mae Samples and Mrs. Grace Fisher both of Edison, also twenty grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. Submitted by Diane L. Woodard Portage, Wi.
