Obituary of Caroline Smith, 1898 - Monroe Co. WV Monroe Watchman, circa March 22, 1898 Death of Mrs. Caroline Smith Mrs. Caroline Smith, widow of the late Mr. Granville Smith, died at her home near Lillydale, in Springfield district, this county, at 7 o'clock on Saturday evening last, March 19th, 1898, after an illness of only 36 hours, of apoplexy. Mrs. Smith was a sister of the late Mr. S. M. Clark, and was 72 years of age. She had long been a member of the M. E. Church and her life was a notable exponent of womanly usefulness and unfeigned grace of heart. She will be greatly and sadly missed both by her fond family and her friends, Mrs. Smith leaves 8 children. Her two sons, Drs. Rugus and J. J. Smith, who reside in the far West, were unable to attend her funeral. Her remains were interred in the family cemetery near Mr. Fletcher Ballard's at 3 o'clock on last Sunday afternoon, Rev. R. H. Clark conducting the service.
