Will of Joseph Abbott Monroe County, Virginia Will Book 5, page 469-470, 1852 In the name of God Amen I Joseph Abbott, of the County of Monroe and State of Virginia, being weak in body by reason of affliction but of perfect mind and memory (thanks be given unto God) and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament (Viz/ and first I recommend my soul to God who gave it it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial nothing doubting but the same shall be raised again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such wordly substance where with it hath pleased God to bless me, I give and bequeath and divise the same in the manner and form following (Viz). First I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of any moneys or levied out of my personal property. 2nd I give and bequeath that if my son St. Clair Abbott can prevent the plantation from being sold under the Deed of Trust which James A Dunlap holds on it, that my grandson Charles Abbott have it at the death of my well beloved wife Gemima. 3rd I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife Gemima the plantation during her life, if not sold under the above named deed of Trust and all the rest of my estate both real and personal of what nature or kind so over it may be not herein before particularly disposed of. 4th I will that if the plantation be sold under the deed of Trust the surplus be paid over to my beloved wife Gemima to have and to hold forever. 5th I give and bequeath to my well beloved children (Viz), Wilson, St. Clair, John, Lucinda, Joseph, Sophia, Esther, each of them one dollar. And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my friend James Thompson executor of this last will and testament hereby revoking all other of former wills or testaments by me heretofore made.
