Monroe County, Virginia Will Book 3, p. 457-458 November Court 1840 I Adam Mann of Monroe County & State of Virginia do hereby make my last will and Testament in manner and following that is to say: 1st I devise all my just debts if there are any with my funeral expenses be paid out of my personal property be paid. 2ndly after the payment of my debts & funeral expenses I give to my wife Polly one third part of my Estate both real & personal for and during the term of her natural life & after her decease I give the same to my children herein after mentioned & to be enjoyed by them forever. 3rdly I will to my grandchildren, the children of Elizabeth Halsted late Elizabeth Mann dec'd. one dollar to be equally divided between them all to be paid by Executor and I have heretofore provided for the said Elizabeth in land & other personal estate. 4thly I will to my son William Mann one dollar to be paid by my Executor as I have provided for him in land heretofore. 5thly I will to my daughter Sally Cummins late Sally Mann one dollar to be paid by my Executor as I have heretofore provided for her in land & personal estate. 6thly I will to my son James Mann one dollar to be paid by Executor as I have heretofore provided for him in land that he is in possession. 7thly I will to my daughter Jane Harvey late Jane Mann one dollar as I have provided for her in personal property. 8thly I will to my son Joseph Mann one dollar as I have heretofore provided for him in land. &9thly I will to my son Henry Mann one dollar as I have heretofore provided for him in land. 10thly I will to my daughter Cloe Gibson late Chloe Mann one dollar as I have heretofore provided for her in personal property. &11thly I will to my son Adam Mann all the land that I now live on supposed to be one hundred & thirty six acres be the same more or less that I have not conveyed away to any person whatever. &12thly I will to my son John Man two hundred dollars one hundred of it above to be paid in one year after my decease & one hundred of the same which is the residue to be paid in one year. Thereafter that is it is to be paid in two installments & I will him a bed & bed clothes sufficient for one bed & one cow & five sheep to be given him when he needs. &13thly I also will my son Adam Mann all my household & kitchen furniture, the wagon with the harness & the Smith tools in the Shop with the wheat fan in the barn, all to be his at his mother's death & mine & I will that fear construction be made of this my last will & Testament & that no part of it be Strained. &14thly I constitute & appoint my son Adam Mann Executor of this my last will & testament given under my hand this 12th day of January 1835. Adam Mann, seal William Handley, James Mann – Monroe County Court: This day William Handley one of the subscribers & witnesses to the will personally before me a Justice of the peace for the County aforesaid and after being duly sworn stated on oath that Adam Mann did sign & Acknowledge that said writing amassed as his last will & Testament in the presence and did request him to attest the same as a witness and at the time that the same was signed & acknowledged the said Adam Mann was in his proper senses & capable of disposing of his property given under my hand this 17th day of August 1840. I certify that it appears to me that William Handly who has made the above affidavit is unable at this time to appear in Court as a witness given under my own hand this date. James A Dunlap, J.P.
