Bonnieb254@home.com Excerpts from the Morgan Messenger Thursday December 25th, 1902 Holton December 22 The weather has moderated and not a vistage of ice remains but the trees are considerably stripped of limbs. Our people most all have their Christmas Trees ready for trimming. Mr. Dell Butts met with a serious accident one day last week in carrying a large pole of wood on his shoulder, his slipped and fell on the ice, cutting and bruising his face very badly but is better at this writing. Cleve Holton and Charlie Johnson spent last Sunday at their homes but returned on Monday to Martinsburg where they have been employed for sometime. It looks like Christmas to see the show window of our town Merchant, Mr. Hasenbuhler. Miss Ida Starliper was visiting her sister Mrs.Bud Butts one day last week. Mrs.Alice Bowers spent sometime with her sister Amanda Nevil last week. The boys are all expected home from the various camps to spend the holiday. Dr.Ward of Hedgesville passed through here on his way to Cherry Run one day last week. Some of our young folks are getting ready to attend the entertainment at Sleepy Creek on the 25th. As I’m a cook of course I’m very busy this time of year, I will leave by wishing all the readers, correspondents and Editor and family a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Cook. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Morgan Messenger December 24, 1903 Holton December 21 - The cold snap was broken and snow turning to rain on Satuday has made the roads very bad for traveling. Christmas will soon be here, and the little ones are already in great glee over the event, so are others. We are sorry to note the death of Mrs. J.W.Butts which occurred on last Thursday night from heart trouble. She was a christian lady and a friend to all. She leaves an aged husband, and two daughters and four sons, brothers and sisters and a dear old mother 83years old to mourn their loss. Miss Leua Baureale of Martinsburg, who has been visiting relatives near here, left for Philadelphia to spend the winter with her sister Mrs. Ro Dickson. Quite a number of our people went to Johnson town to attend the sale of Mrs. Edwards, deceased, on last Friday. Property sold well, especially stock. Rankin Bros of Martinsburg were here this week attending the funeral of Mrs. Butts. Mr.Thornton Poole of Cumberland was visiting his parents on the Lane last week. Mrs. Bennett of Washington, who came home to attend the funeral of her mother is spending a few days with her sister Mrs. Luther Keesecker on the Lane. Our school has opened at last under the instruction of Miss.Custer of Berkeley Springs, and we are glad of it and hope that the patrons will help her all they can by sending their children regularly. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all. Cook.
