He married Mary Hunt Davis in 1853 and secondly married Mary Langdon Dana in 1870. He had two sons and two daughters. He was a cadet at West Point in 1844, graduated and promoted to Brevet 2nd Lt., 3rd U.S. Artillery, July 1, 1848; promoted to 1st lt. 2nd U.S. Artillery, February 14, 1849, participated in the Seminole Indian War in Florida from 1849-1850, served on frontier duty at Fort Defiance, New Mexico and served in the escort of Lt. A.W. Whipple on the Pacific Railroad survey across northern Arizona from 1853-54. He retired as a Colonel and Brevit Major General, U.S. Army, on January 25, 1889. He died at Montclair, Essex County, New Jersey on May 15, 1906 at the age of 81.
