Cheek to Louisa Cox Ohio County Courthouse, Deed Book 59, p. 391-392: Transcribed by Laura Thomas, May 30, 1998 This Indenture made this 16th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy two between James Cheek and Rebecca Cheek his wife of Ohio County and State of West Virginia of the first part and Louisa Cox of the same county and State of the second part. Witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of Five hundred Dollars to him in hand paid by the said party of the second part the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged hath bargained and sold and doth by these presents bargain and sell unto the said party of the second part and to her heirs or assigns forever a piece of land adjoining the lands of the said party of the first part lying on Castleman's Run, Ohio County, State of West Virginia and bounded as follows, commencing at a Red Oak on Castleman's Run and being the corner to farmer McMurry & James Cheek and running thence N.89 W. 18 p. to a stone pile thence South 61° W. 47.5 poles to Red Oak thence S. 25° E. 15.5 p. to a stone in the line of the lands owned by the heirs of Isaac Hill thence N. 561/2 E. 44 p. to a stake thence N. 40 E. 12.6 p. to sycamore tree thence N. 781/2 E. 9.2 p. to the beginning corner and containing three acres and 158 p. more or less. Together with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging, to have and to hold to the said party of the second part her heirs and assigns forever. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals, the day and year first above written. (Signed) James Cheek Rebecca Cheek State of West Virginia Township of Liberty in Ohio County to wit: I Henry Spear a Justice of the Township and County aforesaid in the State of West Virginia do certify that James Cheek whose name is signed to the writing hereunto annexed bearing date on the sixteenth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and Seventy two acknowledged the same before me in my Township. Given under my hand this sixteenth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and Seventy two. Henry Spear Justice State of West Virginia Township of Liberty in Ohio County to wit: I Henry Spear a Justice of the Township and county aforesaid do certify that Rebecca A. Cheek the wife of James Cheek whose names are signed to the writing hereto annexed bearing date on the sixteenth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and Seventy two personally appeared before me in my Township aforesaid and being duly examined by me privily and apart from her husband and having the writing fully explained to her, she, the said Rebecca A. Cheek acknowledged the said writing to be her act and declared that she had willingly executed the same and does not wish to retract it.
