L. CORE B. L. Core, a prosperous young farmer of Pleasants County, was born there in 1857, and is a son of W. G. H. and Adelia C. (Barrack) Core, both natives of Harrison county. The father was reared in the last mentioned county where he learned the trades of brick moulder, shoe- making and tailoring. After his marriage, he removed to Newport, and when he landed there he had only the munificent sum of 28 cents with which to begin life. He began work as a tailor, at which he remained one year, and then removed to St. Marys, where he continued his trade in connection with farming. He was soon elected constable of Pleasants county, at which he served for several years, doing nearly all of the sheriff's business at the same time. Subsequently he went into the mercantile business on Middle Island Creek, where he remained over five years and then removed to St. Marys where for about sixteen years he conducted a large and lucrative business. But misfortune finally overtook him and he was almost completely ruined financially. But he fought bravely through his difficulties, and so conducted himself as to make friends out of enemies, and now occupies a front rank in the citizenship of the county. He has served the county as commissioner and representative, and at the election in November, 1890, he was elected on the democratic ticket as a member of the house of delegates. In politics he has always been an uncompromising democrat. Our subject was reared in Pleasants county, where he received his education at the common schools. In 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Roxy, daughter of C. W. and Joanna (Hubbs) Bills. The result of the union has been the birth of two children: Victor and Bethel by name. Mrs. Core, whoo is a very estimable lady, is a native of Pleasants county, where she was reared and has always lived. Mr. Core owns seventy-seven acres of good land in thee oil belt near Belmont, and is one of the leading farmers and popular citizens of his county.
