She was born Sept. 11, 1904, in Calcutta, Pleasants County, WV, to William J. and Mamie Alice Kester Bills. She attended Williamstown High School, then went to work for Ohio Bell Telephone Co. of Marietta and American Telephone and Telegraph in Miami, NY, Buffalo, NY, and Pittsburgh. She and her husband operated a hot dog stand in downtown Williamstown. She was also employed by Biddle's Grocery Store for 12 years as a meat cutter and clerk. She last worked for the Lafayette Hotel for 18 years, retiring as a desk clerk in 1979. She was a member of New England Ridge Bethany Christian Church. She is survived by four daughters, Abbie Irene Smith and Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Butler and her husband, Gene, all of Williamstown, Mary Frances Byer and her husband, John, of Marietta, and Martha Louise Gabbert of Parkersburg; four grandchildren, Sheila Lindsay and her husband, Scott, of Oak Harbor, Steven Smith and his wife, Kim, of Poland, OH, R.E. Gene Butler III of Parkersburg and Eric A. Butler of Williamstown; and six great- grandchildren, Michael Lindsay and his wife, Tracy, David, Eric, and Steven Lindsay, all of Oak Harbor, and Cassandra and Nathan Smith of Poland. On Dec. 26, 1926, she married Bida Arnold Gabbert. He died in 1970. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, Ralph, and Isaac Bills; and two sisters, Lucille Bills and Ruth Slater Mills. "Tex" Gainer, 62, of Glenville, a long-time Gilmer County coach, administrator and politician, died Tuesday at his home after an apparent heart attack. He was born in Gilmer County, a son of the late Dennis W. and Farrie Fitzpatrick Gainer. Gainer was a retired educator from Calhoun and Gilmer counties. He was a former director of the Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center and a former teacher and coach at Normantown High School. He was president of the Gilmer County Commission, having served one partial term, and was completing his second term as a member. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Nemesis Shrine of Parkersburg. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Neva Lynn Ellyson Gainer; one son, Earl Mark Gainer of Glenville; one brother, Glen Gainer of St. Marys; and one sister, Geraldine Elders of Mt. Airy, MD; Larry Gainer of St. Marys is his nephews. Services were Friday at Spurgeon-Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville. Burial was in Meadow Lane Cemetery. She was born Nov. 21, 1919, at Schultz to the late Thomas Gale and Mary Hall Maston. She graduated from St. Marys High School and the Metropolitan Hospital School of Nursing in New York City in 1942. Following graduation, she taught operating room procedures at Metropolitan Hospital before moving to Vermont where she later founded Gaines Real Estate Agency. She was an active member of Vergennes United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Allen Gaines, of Vergennes; four sons, Theodore Murin of S. Burlington, VT, Gary Gaines and his wife, Mary Beth, of Vergennes, Joe Gaines and his wife, Robin, of S. Burlington, and Scott W. Gaines and his wife, Mackey, of Vergennes; two daughters, Donna Lee Johnson of Florida and Linda Springer of Ohio; three grandchildren; two sisters, Opal Martin and Hazel Flower and her husband, Leo, of St. Marys; a brother, Eugene Maston and his wife, Grace; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a retired history and political science teacher at Alderice High School in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Gale was the fourth generation of his family to serve Newport as a physician. He was the son of the late Dr. George Hays Gale and Carolyn McGrew Gale. His grandfather, George Thomas Gale, and great-grandfather, George Washington Gale, were physicians in Newport, with the first Dr. Gale beginning his medical practice in 1821. Dr. Gale closed his practice Oct. 25, 1983, due to ill health. Dr. Gale was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. He interned and spent a year's residency in surgery at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, OH. He joined his father in the family practice in 1950. Dr. Gale was a World War II Army veteran, a member of the Washington County Medical Society, the Ohio State Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marietta, and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Walton Gale, whom he married in May 1982; two daughters, Mary Margaret Gale, of Marietta, and Kathleen, at home; two sons, Michael, of Washington, D.C., and Larrey W., at home. GALE 28 Sep 1925 Dr. Larry R (middle name unreadable but looks like Richard) Gale, prominent young physician and lifelong resident of Newport, OH, died Sunday morning at eleven thirty o'clock, following five months' illness. Death was attributed to heart disease. Born at Newport on February 28, 1891, the son of Dr. George and Mrs. Myra H. Gale, he spent practically all of his life at Newport. During the world war, he served a year as physician in the United States army, having been stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, and Fort Beauregard, LA. In June, 1920, he was united in marriage to Miss Alice Neptune, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. (Unreadable) Neptune, of Marietta. Two sons, Larry R. Gale, Jr., and William Hammett Gale, were born to this union. Dr. Gale was a member of the St. John's Church at St. Marys, WV. He was well and favorably known in the community where he lived and the news of his death came as a shock to his host of friends. Besides his parents, Dr. and Mrs. George T. Gale, at Newport, and two sons, one brother, Dr. George H. Gale, also survives, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Dr. Gale attended the public schools at Newport, later being graduated from the Newport high school. After his graduation from high school, he attended Marietta College for one year, then went to Philadelphia, where he attended the Jefferson medical college. He was at this school for three years and finished his medical course at the University of Cincinnati. Funeral service was held from the late home in Newport on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Gardner died at his home on Fourth Street at five o'clock Wednesday morning of typhoid fever, after an illness of several weeks. The news of his death was a great shock to the community, as just the preceding day he had been reported improving. He was born in Monroe County, OH, November, 1865, moving with his parents to a farm at Mount Carmel, this county, in 1884. About three years ago, he purchased the Ruttencutter farm on Middle Island Creek, but sold it and joined his brother, Forrest, in the butcher business in this city; at the same time buying the property on Fourth Street, where he has resided for the last two years. He is survived by his wife and four children, besides five brothers and sisters. The remains will be interred this afternoon at New Bethel Church, the services to be conducted by Rev. She also worked as a cook at Camp Hervida for 43 years. She was the oldest member of the Willow Island Baptist Church, having joined in 1915. She was born in Pleasants County, a daughter of the late Thomas David and Margaret Robinson Garrett. She is survived by a sister, Nellie Marie Rowell of Belmont; two nephews; and on niece. Her mother was born in Devonshire, England, of a family tracing linage to Celtic kings of Scotland in the days of Robert Bruce, and came to America at the age of 20 with the Robert Browse family. Goff, 91, of Lewisburg, died Nov. 10 at the Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home following a long illness. Born Aug. 6, 1892, at St. Marys, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Cotton. Mrs. Goff was an active member in the Lewisburg United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, served as president of the Women's Society from 1951-1953, and was active in other phases in the work of the church. She also served as district president of the Women's Society. She was a 50-year member and past matron of St. Marys Chapter No. 31, Order of Eastern Star, honorary member of the Valley Trails Garden Club in Lewisburg, a retired elementary school teacher and a former member of the Lewisburg Woman's Club. Mrs. Goff taught at St. Marys Elementary School from 1918 until 1926 and served two years as principal of that school. Mrs. Goff was preceded in death by her husband, Don Goff, in 1964. Goff, an Eastman Kodak Co. photographic engineer and a Webster, NY naturalist whose love for bird photography spanned seven decades, died Sept. 15 in an Arlington, VA, hospital. Goff, of 191 S. Estate Drive, Webster, NY, died after being hospitalized for an internal hemorrhage while attending a wedding in Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Edna; three children, Glenn, of Belmont; Marshall of Syracuse, NY, and Heather Goff Taylor of Pleasantown, CA; and by four grandchildren. He had earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Beloit College, Beloit, WI, and a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1946, he came to Rochester and joined Kodak in its Manufacturing Experiments Division. He retired from the company's Division of Technology in 1978. The bulk of her life was spent at Pt. Lookout, except for a few years during World War II when she lived in Norfolk, VA, while her husband was in the service, for some time living in Weirton when steel mill employment beckoned, and for six years spent in St. Marys during her husband's tenure as sheriff of Pleasants County. For the past seven years she had resided with Betty and Burl Smith, a niece and nephew of Eureka. She is also survived by several other nieces and nephews and three sisters- in-law; Virginia Northcraft of Weirton, Erciline Henderson of Sistersville, and Elizabeth (Midge) Ward of Colorado. Grable, 84, recently of Reno, NV, passed away after a brief illness July 10 in Reno. He was a veteran of the oil and gas industries both in the U.S. and abroad and spent much time in the business in the local area. During the 1930s in Peru he was part of a pioneering team of oilmen who drilled the first wildcat well east of the Andes. In 1938 he patented the original power tong considered an industry standard on all drilling and work-over rigs. He was president of Big Injun Drilling Co. of Marietta, OH, and drilled in Ohio and West Virginia. During the 1960s he was president of American Pacific Petroleum Corp. of Los Angeles and later served on the board of directors. In 1988 he published two books, "Anyone For Diamonds?" a recollection of his early years working in Peru; and "The Egyptian and Inca Gold Traders," which explained his theory of how and why the ancient Egyptians may have traded with the peoples of South America. Grable was a longtime member of the Los Angeles Petroleum Club and was a founding member of the Long Beach Petroleum Club. He was married for 52 years to the late Evelyn Glidden Grable. She was a writer and a herbalist and had written two books, "Let's Hear It for Herbs" and "First Petticoat Government." She was a contributing writer for "Better Homes and Gardens," "Herb Quarterly," the "West Virginia Hillbilly," and the Parkersburg News. The Associated Press would print her articles nationwide on occasion. She wrote "Dot's Dashes" for The St. Marys Oracle and was a founder and member of the "Front Porch Swingers" musical group. She had resided in Manhattan Beach for the past 24 years and was the widow of the late Bruce Fulton Grimm of St. Marys. Mrs. Grimm was the former Mae Belle Stanley and was born in Calcutta. She is survived by two children, Bruce Fulton Grimm, Jr., of Manhattan Beach, and Bette Grimm Murray of Mission Viejo, CA. Mrs. Grimm and her husband resided in Washington, D.C. And Matick, MA, during the years where she spent much of her time as a "Gray Lady" volunteer in the Red Cross serving hospitals in those cities. She had spent many years as a Religious Science Practitioner under the direction of the late Ernest Holmes, founder of the Institute of Religious Science and Philosophy, at their headquarters in Los Angeles. Her father, John Robert Stanley, taught school in St. Marys, and her uncle, Allen H. Stanley, operated the first dry goods store in St. Marys. Her father-in-law was Dr. A.S. Grimm, one of the first "horse and buggy" doctors who built the first and only hospital in St. Marys. Her brother, J. Robert Stanley, and two sisters, Lucille Dotson and Martha Smith, preceded her in death by a few years. He was a devout member of the Methodist Church and was always conspicuous in all its important undertakings. She was a descendent of the Mayflower Compact Member Edward Doty and was a member of the Mayflower Society, the Pilgrim Edward Doty Society,, and the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. She was active in Girl Scouting in the 1940s and was chairman of the Pleasants County Chapter of the American Red Cross during World War II and was recognized in "Who's Who of American Women." She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter of the late Rhodes Stansbury and Louise Singer Sutton. She is survived by a daughter, Louise Gwinn Sivy of Annapolis, MD; four grandchildren, Michael Sivy, of Boise, ID, Thomas Donald Gwinn of Pocatello, ID, Annette Louise Gwinn of San Francisco, CA, and Allison Gwinn May of Boise, ID; three great-grandchildren; and a nephew. He was born Sept. 1, 1912, in St. Marys, a son of the late Vinton Edward and Flora Smith Gwinn. He was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church. He attended St. Marys High School, but poor health dictated a move to Arizona where he graduated from St. David High School in 1930. For many years, he lived in St. Marys with his mother. Following her death, he moved to Houston. Later he moved to San Antonio, where he resided with his brother, Clarence Lloyd Gwinn. He is survived by one sister, Mary Gwinn Carpenter of Coraopolis, PA; a niece (unreadable) He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Lloyd Gwinn, Donald Smith Gwinn, Vinton Edward Gwinn Jr., and one nephew, Vinton Edward Gwinn III.
