On Thursday evening April 6th, 1916, at seven o'clock death's lot fell to Dessie Marie Kearns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Kearns of this city. (Next line unreadable) W.Va., October 23, 1901. When death came, she was only fourteen years, five months and fourteen days old, but death is no respecter of persons and favors youth no more than old age. When Dessie was a small child , her parents moved from Sistersville to Calcutta, W.Va., where she lived several years and won the friendship and love of her school-mates and neighbors. In November 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Kearns moved to St. Marys where they could have better school advantages for their children. Here Dessie made new friends but she was always loyal to her little friends of other places. At home she was as near a perfect lady as it was possible for a girl to be. She received parental instruction, admonition, and affection kindly and virtures grew apace into gentle words and loving deeds, while a smiling countenance reflected a tender heart beneath. She carried the cheerfulness of her home life with her wherever she went. Her truthfulness, willingness, and obedience at home made her thoughtful and graceful abroad. Since March 1913, Dessie was just absent from Sunday School once until her last illness. Then it was impossible for her to go. She always felt that she was doing wrong when she did not go. With this conviction she said shortly before her death that she wished to live closer to her Savior. She went home from Sunday School sick and continued getting worse until her death. Her body was laid to rest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, while many friends stood by with bowed heads and aching hearts for the loss of their dear young friend and in sympathy for her father Mr. G.F. and her mother, Mrs. Maude Kearns, and her only brother, Walter Kearns, whose sorrow cannot be expressed. (Source Unknown. 06 Apr. 1916) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- KEARNS, DESSIE MARIE (2) CARD OF THANKS Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Kearns and their son, Walter Kearns, desire to make public the acknowledgment of their inexpressible gratitude to the good people of St. Marys for every token of interest and kindness while Dessie was sick and for the sympathy manifested after her death. Especially do they wish to thank their friends for the grand floral tribute which was an evidence of great love for Dessie and brought much comfort to them in their sorrow.
