YOST of Central Killed Saturday Afternoon When Struck By Train PROBABLY DID NOT HEAR TRAIN COMING And Engineer Was Unable to Stop in Time-Body Taken to Williamstown While walking alone of the tracks of the main line of the Ohio River Division of the B & O near Vienna yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock. George F. YOST, an aged resident of Central was struck and killed by train No. 72, en route from this city to Pittsburg. It is thought that his faculties had been impaired by age, and that he did not hear the approaching train which struck him before the engineer in charge could bring it to a stop. The train was halted within a short distance from the scene of the accident and the body taken in charge by members of the crew who took it on the train to Williamstown where it was turned over to an undertaker. Coroner B. O. ROBINSON was notified and went to Williamstown to view the body, stating on his return to this city that an inquest would not be held. The deceased was about 82 years of age and had resided in this county for about thirteen years, living at Central, a short distance from the scene of the fatal accident. He was in the habit of taking long walks and it is believed that while walking along the track yesterday afternoon he did not hear the approaching train, being slightly deaf. He suffered a deep gash on the head, the skull being fractured which caused his death. A number of severe bruises were sustained about the body and several bones were broken, the body being dragged a short distance after being struck. Local officials of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to whom the accident was reported stated last night that the accident would be fully investigated. The engineer and conductor in charge of the train will not return to this city until this morning when the?? Report of the accident will be submitted to Superintendent J.W. ROOT and other officials. It was stated by members of the crew that the engineer did not see the aged man until the train was almost upon him, as it was about dusk, and he was unable to bring the train to a stop in time to avert the fatal accident. The deceased man is survived by his widow, Mrs. G. F. YOST of Central and two sons, E. M. YOST and L(?) F. YOST who reside at Midway on the Interurban. The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. Name and Date of Newspaper: UNKNOWN WILL INVESTIGATE DEATH OF MAN KILLED BY TRAIN An investigation of the death of George F. Yost, of Central, the aged man who was killed Saturday evening near Vienna by train No. 72, is to be made by officials of the Baltimore and Ohio in this city. Members of the train crew who witnessed the accident have exonerated the engineer of the train from all blame for the accident, it being probable that age had impaired the faculties of Mr. Yost to such an extent that he did not hear or see the approaching train which was coming at it's usual rate of speed after leaving this city. It is believed that the man wandered from home and onto the railroad track and was not seen in the gathering dusk by the engineer until it was too late to bring the train to a halt. The funeral of the victim of the accident will be held this morning at Independence, Ohio, near which he formerly resided. The body will be sent to St. Marys Doudna and McClure, undertakers of Marietta who took charge of the remains after the accident, and from there it will be taken to Independence where services will be held and interment will be made in the cemetery of that place. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "Oracle" Fe. 2 (?), 1980 NOAH E.
