I have visited this cemetery and the site is nothing short of breathtaking. A path wide enough for wagons leads up to the burial ground at about a 45 degree angle. Trees of at least 150 years of age align both the path and the cemetery. Upon reaching the top, the cemetery seems almost "perched" on the mountain...as if it is has a direct view to God. Many of those buried here are children, sometimes several from one family. In fact, at least 84 of the known 202 burials in the Richard Hill Cemetery belong to children under the age of 16, with the majority of those under the age of 8. Tragically it appears in some cases, that a disease may have struck a family and killed siblings within days of each other. This burial ground is one of the first of the county and more importantly is final resting place of Pocahontas' pioneer Richard Hill. Sadly, it has become overgrown due to lack of use. Although we have family members working on restoring this wondrous place, I am afraid it will never again resemble it's luster as time & her elements have been working against us. Please contact me if you'd like to help with restoration or visit the final resting-place of my ancestors. As you will read, there are many (too many) sunken graves without markers, markers without identification, and large spaces between marked graves that most likely contain burial places whose markers have somehow disappeared. Since this is an old cemetery, most of those folks who may be able to remember those buried here have passed on themselves. Perhaps you know of some others buried here that are not listed ? Enjoy..." - Kristy Edenfield ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NOTES: The wording following each grave number is supposedly transcribed word for word from the gravestone. The other wording used is one of the following: Comments shown in QUOTATIONS are also present on the actual gravestone (head &/or footstone) Comments shown in PARENTHESIS are made by the author, Hubert Taylor. Comments shown in ASTERIKS are made by Hill family donator, Kristy Edenfield. Some surnames appear with different spellings, even when referring to the same person: CROOKSHANKS - CRUIKSHANKS EDMINSON - EDMISTON MCCLUER - MCCLURE This book has many sketches of the handmade stones from the cemetery, particularly many of the decorative coverstones. Those with sketches are shown with (@). The Hill Cemetery is located on the brow of a ridge between the Hills Creek Valley and the Bruffeys Creek Valley. The land is now (1988) owned by Leroy Rose, and before his ownership it was known as the Ryder Place. The cemetery is about 200 yards east of the original homesite of Richard HILL. Most of the hand-made grave markers are sandstone from the hillside west of the Emmanuel Church, along the Bruffeys Creek. John BRUFFEY was the stone carver who did most of the work. He must have prepared several stones in advance as there are stones in the cemetery with decorative carvings, but no names or dates on them. He died in 1874. A stone indicates that Cornelius OHOVER was the first person buried there. Nothing is remembered about him other than he was an Irishman, and no dates appear on the stone. The oldest dated stone appears to be for Jesse MORRISON who died 1805, the son of James MORRISON and Elizabeth CALLISON. Richard HILL was first known to be in what is now Pocahontas County in 1786. The Greenbrier County Personal Property Tax 1787 list "B," indicates that he owned two horses. He was married by that time and probably owned land. He purchased land from William & Sarah RENICK in 1792 (240 acres) and in 1799 (350 acres). ....page 1.............................................................. Elizabeth CALLISON was the wife of James MORRISON, married in 1796. The head stone is slightly slanted and sunken with the large grave coverstone touching the ground on the upper side.) *My belief is the "CIVB" is actually "GIVB"..the "GIV" for "Given" and the "B" is for "Birth." It is unknown who her parents were* -16- Nancy HOGSETT 1793 - 1844 (@) (These dates are located behind the headstone facing the grave on a large grave coverstone. Nancy was the wife of John F. HOGSETT. The footstone at this grave has been switched from the above grave as it has writing "Elizabeth MORRISON died 1828 age 60y." This grave coverstone is the most decorated in the cemetery) *What if this is actually the resting place of Elizabeth CALLISON MORRISON instead of Nancy HOGSETT? This meaning the footstones are correct. It would seem that Elizabeth should be buried next to her husband & children* -17- James MORRISON decd 1858 "age 96 yrs" (This information is on the outside of the footstone. There is a large grave coverstone. James MORRISON was a county pioneer who came here in 1784 from Winchester, WV & the husband of Elizabeth CALLISON) -18- A.C. The author states that this "abortion" must have been the son from a grand- daughter of the pioneer Richard Hill, because "none of his daughters would have been old enough." That is untrue. There were 3 daughters at this time who could have bore children: Elizabeth, Martha & Peggy. More likely, the mother of this child was married to a HILL son whose wife lost the baby.* -10- Tippett S.
