Within the fence is a single, 4-sided, white stone monument on a base standing about 5 feet tall, with names inscribed on all four sides with “VARNER” inscribed at the base. German” Date: Oct. 16, 2005 Directions: GPS Reading: UTM 17S0611954 4259717 In Bartow, WV, at the intersection of State Routes 92 & 28 and US 250 at Traveler’s Repose, follow US 250 South, toward Virginia, to the WV & VA state line, about 9 miles. At the sign “Monongahela National Forest Camp Allegheny” turn right following dirt, forest service-type road. At 0.6 miles turn right at the T- intersection following signs to Camp Allegheny. At 1.5 miles there will be a sign on the left “Monongahela National Forest – Hanger Plantation planted by Greenbank High School Classes”. At 1.8 miles turn right onto an old, rutted, woods road leading back into a dense stand of pines. (If you come to Camp Allegheny on the left you have traveled too far.) Drive with 4 WD vehicle or walk 0.3 miles following the old woods road through the pines to a USFS gate and fence beyond which is an open USFS grazing area. Cross the gate and walk along worn vehicle track across the ridge and down through a narrow band of open trees to a continuation of the open grassy grazing area. Readily visible at the point of the lower ridge is the single, white Varner monument encircled by a new 4-foot, chain-link fence, about 20-ft. square.
