The document which follows has been taken from a printed copy by use of an optical character recognition program. While this digital version has been checked somewhat, many errors remain. Researchers are advised to utilize this document for quick search, and to check findings against a printed copy. The printed version includes a surname index, and a map which indicates locations of cemeteries in the county. The Society has collected additional material since the first publication of CEMETERIES in 1990, and this data has been included in this revised edition. Sam P. Sentelle Winfield, West Virginia March 22, 1998 PUTNAM COUNTY CEMETERIES [SEAL] PUBLISHED 1990 (With Added Material to March 22, 1998) BY THE UPPER VANDALIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY P. O. Box 111 Winfield, West Virginia 25159 INTRODUCTION This book is the result of a long and persistent effort put forth by many people. It has been an on-going project of the Upper Vandalia Historical Society that began several years ago. A committee was appointed at that time to proceed with a survey of as many Putnam County cemeteries as could be located. The project proved to be an enormous task as 255 cemeteries were found and recorded and more than 1700 different surnames were listed and indexed. Almost before the survey was finished, however, several more old burying grounds were reported that had been overlooked. It is the intension of the committee to continue to collect additional records as more cemeteries are located and from time to time publish supplementary editions to this register. The committee wishes to thank the many volunteers who braved the briars, chiggers, and poison ivy to collect the records for this register. The names of the individual recorders are listed under the cemeteries which they surveyed. The committee also wishes to express their special appreciation to Elaine Gates who spent many hours carefully typing and arranging this entire volume.
