The cemetery itself is on land originally owned by Leonard and Stella Vest and later sold to their daughter and son-in-law Earl and Golda Smith. This is a family cemetery and all seven people interred there were related. It was originally called the Vest Cemetery but the name was changed to Smith Cemetery to distinguish it from the nearby E.B. Vest Cemetery. Leonard Haliburton Vest and Emma Stella Vest were the parents of eight children including Golda Mae Vest Smith, wife of Earl George Smith. Billy Lee Smith and Bobby Earl Smith were Earl and Golda’s sons and Leonard and Stella’s grandsons. Stella’s birth name was Emma Stella Gadd. Her first husband was James Anderson Elmer Via. Leonard’s first wife was Clara Plumley. Stella and Annie Gadd Turner were sisters, daughters of Powell Wade Gadd and his wife Emma Melissa Martin. Annie’s birth name was Sarah Ann Frances Gadd. She married James William Hatcher and George W. Turner.
