"Romantic Marriage" - Summers/Ross, 1881 Article originally published 4 Jan. 1881 in the Raleigh Index newspaper; Reprinted 26 Aug. 1950 in the 1950 Centennial Edition of the Beckley Post-Herald. Reprinted by permission. --Romantic Marriage At the residence of Mr. James Francis on Tuesday, the 28th inst., by the Rev. R. C. Wiseman, Mr. Summers, of Pulaski County, Va., and Miss Lelia T. Ross, of Raleigh Co. The particulars of the foregoing marriage and the courtship are somewhat romantic. It seems that Miss Ross and a young man from Virginia were paying their respects to each other, when she asked him who his sweet-heart in Virginia was; whereupon she was told that it was a Miss Summers of Pulaski county. After some time Miss Ross and the young man had a falling out and she wrote to Miss Summers, telling the circumstances of the quarrel, and they corresponded for some time. Through the correspondance of his sister, Mr. Summers asked for a correspondance with Miss Ross. After corresponding some time, letters of love passed, and finally they came to terms. He came on, and at the time and place were married, having never seen each other before. On the same day they started for their home in Pulaski County, Va. The bride is of a good family and leaves many friends behind. May each side of the stream of life, down which they sail, be decked with beautiful flowers, and may the waters be smooth and placid. [Note: In Pauline Haga's book, "Early Marriages of Raleigh County Vol. 2 1871-1890", this marriage is recorded on page 53. There is a slight discrepancy between the transcription and the above account: Dec. 27, 1880 - Leroy Summers, 27y, 7m, 8d, born in Roanoke Co. Va, resident of Raleigh Co. (article says Pulaski Co. Va.), and Lelia Samuel Ross, 20y, 5m, 4d, born Raleigh Co. Married by Robert C. Wiseman.
