Register Herald Obituaries for April 2, 2000 John Porter Bell WHITESVILLE - John Porter Bell, 81, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at his home after a long illness. Born April 2, 1918, in Clifty, Tenn., he was the son of the late Thomas H. and Dora Baley Bell. Mr. Bell was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Georgia Willomine Turner Bell; three daughters, Brenda May Adams of Hampton, Va., Lois Jeanine Dorrin of Lynchburg, Va., and Glenna Gail Warrick of Irvington, Ala.; four sons, Charles Greer and Carl Darrell Bell, both of Whitesville, James Robert Bell of Walhonde Village and Paul Wayne Bell of New Richmond, Wis.; a sister, Mary Raye Morgan of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Armstrong Funeral Home Chapel, Whitesville, with the Revs. Rodney Allen and Mervin Sizemore officiating. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Cales, 79, died Friday, March 31, 2000, in a Summers County hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 25, 1921, in Sandstone, he was the son of the late Simon and Alma Cox Cales. Mr. Cales was a retired school teacher with the Summers County school system and a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post No. 45000 in Hinton and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Anna Mae Smith Cales; four daughters, Shirley Ann Cales at home, Diana L. Willey of Winston-Salem, N.C., Beverly Fredeking of Sandstone and Debra L. Harvey of Hinton; a sister, Frances Thompson, and nephew, David Thompson, of Prince; two granddaughters, Kimberly "Dee Dee" Gwinn of Durham, N.C., and Jennifer L. Prince of Hinton; a grandson, David Alan Harvey of Hinton; several nieces and nephews; and an adorable cat, Ashley. At the request of Mr. Cales, his body has been cremated. There will be no visitation or services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Green Sulphur District Fire Department at Sandstone or the Summers County Hospital Auxiliary Sunshine Project. "Jack" Campbell, 72, formerly of Lewisburg, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2000, in a Fort Walton Beach hospital following a short illness. Born July 14, 1929, in Union, he was the son of the late Frank B. and Christine Bostic Campbell Hall. Mr. Campbell was a member of the United Methodist Church and retired from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons, in 1978. He was stationed at Elgin Air Force Base following 28 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in Germany. He was a former member and past president of the Maxwelton Ruritan Club. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Jackson Campbell; a sister, Mary Margaret Weigel of Memphis, Tenn.; and a brother, Judge Joseph H. Campbell and his wife, Mary, of Norfolk, Va. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. today at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, Fort Walton Beach, with the Rev. Ashley Pogue officiating. Bud Eric Painter SCARBRO - Bud Eric D. Painter, 16, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, from injuries he received in an automobile accident at Carlisle. Born Oct. 11, 1983, in Michigan, he was the son of Eric Painter of Route 1, Scarbro, and the late Rita Seamon Painter. He was a 10th-grade student at Oak Hill High School and a member of Mossy Living Word Pentecostal Church. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, George Painter, on Nov. 15, 1998. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Eric and Margaret Painter; paternal grandmother with whom he resided, Mary E. Painter of Scarbro; maternal grandparents, Stanley and Shirley Seamon of Ypsilanti, Mich.; stepgrandmother, Macie Lambert of Shady Spring; stepbrother, Darvin Holliday of Shady Spring; stepsister, Marilyn Chambers of Sand Branch; and a host of other family and friends. Born Oct. 12, 1913, in Mossy, he was the son of the late Joseph Otis and Mary Burnside Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired Fayette County Board of Education school bus driver with 13 years of service. He was a member of Mossy Church of God. He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, C. Reed, Carman and Carrie Smith; and a sister, Hallie Smith. Survivors include two sons, Melvin Wayne Smith of Route 1, Fayetteville, and Marvin Randall Smith of Scarbro; three daughters, Carolyn Sue Smith Thrasher of Plant City, Fla., Peggy Ann Dove of Warrenton, Va., and Pamela Gaye Ellis of Oak Hill; a sister, Dorothy Figas of Westlake, Ohio; a brother, Dorsey Smith of Richwood; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
