Register Herald Obituaries for April 9, 2000 Frank H. Aliff Frank Howard Aliff, 30, of Claypool Hollow Road, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at his home following a long illness. Born Feb. 12, 1970, in Hammond, Ind., he was the son of Donald R. Aliff and the late Charlotte Nancy Steele Aliff. Mr. Aliff spent his childhood in Crown Point, Ind., and moved to Lester at the age of 13. He graduated from Liberty High School in 1989. A member of Lester First Church of God, he was last employed at Checkers. Other survivors include his wife, Amy Eickelberg Aliff, and their son, Michael Allin Wayne Aliff, at home; a brother, Michael Aliff of Glen Daniel; and two sisters, Joyce Aliff of Eccles and Judy Aliff of Pensacola, Fla. Sylvia Pearl Bailey SABINE - Sylvia Pearl Duncan Bailey, 83, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at her residence following a long illness. Born May 29, 1916, in Crany, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Thursa Cozort Duncan. Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker, a member of the Church of God and a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. She was preceded in death by a son, Carlos "Pip" Bailey; and a daughter, Judith Elaine Williams. Survivors include four sons, Estil Duncan, Cecil Bailey and Glenn Bailey, all of Cleveland, and Larry Bailey of Sabine; two daughters, Carol Bailey and Cindy Woodson, both of Sabine; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Pine Grove Church, Ravencliff, with the Rev. Ira Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Carpenter WINTERSVILLE, Ohio - Alice Lillian Treadway Carpenter, 71, formerly of Beckley, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Trinity West Hospital, Steubenville, Ohio. Born March 19, 1928, in Skelton, she was the daughter of the late Clinton Bryant and Nettie Mae Honaker Treadway of Maxwell Hill. Mrs. Carpenter attended Skelton Elementary School, Beckley Junior High School and Woodrow Wilson High School of Beckley. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband, Benzil H. Carpenter; a son, Michael E. Mary Ellen Nicolet FAYETTEVILLE - Mary Ellen (Dummitt) Nicolet, 61, passed away into eternal peace on Friday, April 7, 2000, at her home. Mary Ellenšs faith and tender love touched the hearts and souls of family and friends across the country. She will be missed by many, and remembered with fondness by many more. Family members celebrating the joy of her escape from a short illness to her new home in Heaven are her husband, Robert Nicolet; a son, Jack Nicolet; a daughter, Amy Nicolet; a granddaughter, Jasmine Nicolet; brothers, Shad Dummitt and the late Bob Dummitt; and sisters Delphia Dummitt, Georgia Wallace, Betty Dummitt and the late Sandy Broach. Mary Ellen was born Nov. 14, 1938, in Gauley Bridge to the late Aubert and Leno Dummitt. Her passions in life were reserved for her love of family and friends, humble faith in Jesus Christ, gourmet cooking, floral design, calligraphy, photography and taking long walks in the beautiful West Virginia hills. Shaffer, 70, of 859 Old Eccles Road, Beckley, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at a local hospital following a long illness. Born June 14, 1929, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Robert L. Shaffer and Anna Vipperman Shaffer Carper. Mr. Shaffer was a former employee of Greenbrier Dairy, a longtime route carrier and supervisor for Beckley Newspapers and last worked for Central Supply Co. of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church, past master of Beckley Lodge No. 95, A.F. & A.M., deputy grand master of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia from 1978 to 1979, past high priest of Beckley Chapter No. 38, Royal Arch Masons, past watchman of shepherds of Judea Shrine No. 13, past patron of Bethlehem Chapter No. 71 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Mount Hope Commandery No. 022 Knights Templar, a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and a member of Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Jo Shaffer Simpson; a sister, June Shaffer Moore; and two brothers, Robert Shaffer and Jackie Shaffer. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Betty Jo Tolbert Shaffer; two daughters, Debra Ann Shaffer and Judy Lynn Shaffer Bragg, both of Beckley; a granddaughter, Stephanie Simpson of Beckley; three grandsons, Teddy Ray St. Clair of Sophia, Jeremy M. Bragg of Richmond, Va., and Jeffrey T. Bragg of Beckley; and two brothers, James M. Shaffer and his wife, Sadie, of Richlands, Va., and Jerry D. Shaffer and his wife, Maxine, of Beckley. Born June 24, 1926, in Oak Hill, he was the son of Donzella Koontz Taylor and the late Samuel J. "Jack" Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a retired coal dispatcher for Eastern Associated Coal.
