Register Herald Obituaries for April 11, 2000 Charles 'Buddy' Cumby CORINNE - Charles "Buddy" Cumby, 60, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in a Beckley care center following a long illness. Born Dec. 18, 1939, at Amigo, he was the son of Lucille Brandstetter Cumby of Corinne and the late Edward Cumby. Mr. Cumby was a 1958 graduate of Mullens High School and was a U.S. Army veteran, having been stationed in Germany; he was honorably discharged July 8, 1961. After leaving the Army he began working for the N&W Railroad and was disabled in 1984. He was a member of the Mullens Moose Lodge No. 750, served in all offices and was presently serving as administrator. He was past president of District 5 and was a Pilgrim, which is the highest degree of the order. Mr. Cumby was an avid golfer and chief ground keeper of the Wyoming East Athletic Field. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Cumby, and a grandson, Harold Shrewsbury Jr. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Kathryn Franklin Cumby; a son, Richard Cumby and wife, Stacy, of Mullens; two daughters, Belinda Shrewsbury and husband, Harold, of Beckley, and Pam Cumby of Corinne; three grandsons, Todd Shrewsbury of Beckley, Tyler Cumby of Mullens, and Charles Martin of Corinne; three granddaughters, Tara and Brooke Shrewsbury, both of Beckley, and Kasey Cumby of Mullens; three brothers, Andrew Cumby and wife, Cora, of Amigo, James Cumby and wife, Lola, of Oscoda, Mich., and Scotty Cumby and wife, Sara, of Whitwell, Tenn.; three sisters, Francis Smith and husband, Rodney, of Sophia, Loretta Conway and husband, Bud, of Whitwell, Tenn., and Geraldine Church and husband, Bill, of Corinne; and many, many friends. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. J.L. Riffe officiating, with the Moose Pilgrim service also being conducted. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, Mullens. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard. Robert W. Hanshew DANESE - Robert Wriston Hanshew, 87, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston following a long illness. Born May 16, 1912, in Sprague, he was a son of the late John William and Mary Cox Hanshew. He had lived most of his life in Danese, was of the Baptist faith, and was a retired coal miner. Mr. Hanshew was preceded in death by two sisters, Edie Smith and Macil Knight; and four brothers, Dallas Hanshew, Cliff Hanshew, Freddie Hanshew and Earl Hanshew. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Bessie Miller Hanshew of Danese; five daughters, Betty Braunstein and companion Ray of Port Jefferson, N.Y., Patty Sheets and husband Bob of Danese, Rose Fox and husband Curtis of Landisburg, Judy Willis of Grand Rapids, Mich., Sue Redden and husband Gary of Meadow Bridge; one son, Robert W. Hanshew Jr. and wife Shirley of Landisburg; 27 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Harvey HILLDALE - Jack Edward Harvey, 66, of Hillview Road, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at his home following a long illness. Born Aug. 20, 1933, at Avis, he was a son of the late Frank and Myrtle Ellison Harvey. Mr. Harvey had lived most of his life at Hinton. He had been active in the Summers County High School Band Boosters and was a guest columnist for the Beckley newspaper and the Hinton News. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and had worked as a painter. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jimmy, Paul and Bobby Harvey. Survivors include two sons, Robert Michael Harvey and wife, Terry, of Oak Hill, and Jack Edward Harvey II and wife, Tammy, of Talcott; a daughter, Stella Kay Miller and husband, Gary, of Fayetteville, N.C.; a half brother, David Harvey of Rupert; a special niece, Sandy Beckham and husband, Danny, of Florida; and four grandchildren, Mary Beth, Savannah Marie, Levi Austin and Morgan Cheyenne. Minor Alice Delores Minor, 75, of Beckley, formerly of Wingrove, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at a Beckley area care facility following a long illness. Born April 21, 1924, at Accoville, she was the daughter of the late Harvey W. and Flayvella Creasy Minor. Ms. Minor was a member of AME Methodist Church. Survivors include two cousins, Newassa Rhodes of Beckley and James Creasy of Beckley, along with several other cousins and relatives. There will be no services. The body was cremated. Smith SARASOTA, Fla. - Virginia Mae Warden Smith, 84, formerly of Beckley and Abingdon, Va., died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Integrated Health Services, Fla., following a short illness. Born Dec. 23, 1915, at Beckley, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Lula Blake Warden. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Christian Church in Beckley. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose and of the Rural Acres Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Wilson Smith; four brothers, Ray, Mayo, Elmer and Eugene Warden; and a sister, Etta Cook. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy E. Belcher and husband, Larry, of Abingdon, Va., and Sandra K. Esta Mae Wiseman RAINELLE - Esta Mae Wiseman, 87, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital in Anniston, Ala., following a long illness. Born Aug. 30, 1912, at Mountain Cove, she was the daughter of the late David W. and Minerva Boalt Fox. Mrs. Wiseman was a member of the Newton Memorial Baptist Church at Charmco and a member of Sewell Valley Rebekah Lodge 217 at Rainelle. She was a graduate of Ansted High School and attended Jefferson School of Commerce at Charlottesville, Va. She was a former employee of the Meadow River Lumber Co. at Rainelle and was a retired bookkeeper, tax preparer and sales clerk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva J. Wiseman; two brothers, David and George Fox; three sisters, Beaulah Lee Fox, Elizabeth Hicks and Jessie Eagan. Survivors include two sons, Richard Wiseman of Anniston, Ala., and James Wiseman of Boise, Idaho; a brother, Stanley Fox of Victor; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smathers Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Willie Bailes and Bobby McMillion officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
