Caldwell ALDERSON - James Melvin Caldwell, 56, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following an extended illness. Born Aug. 22, 1943, at Ballengee, he was the son of Edith Butler Caldwell of Alderson, and the late Edgar Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell was a disabled veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sidney Curtis Caldwell; and a sister, Janice Sue Caldwell. Other survivors include three brothers, Ronald S. Caldwell of Alderson, Jerry E. Caldwell and wife, Meredith, of Bergoo, and Charles A. Caldwell and wife, Jennifer, of Quinton; two sisters, Judy C. Hare and husband, Wayne, of Russellville, Ark., and Frances K. Parker of Florence, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Harry Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Ballengee. Chapman FAYETTEVILLE - Virginia Elizabeth Chapman, 76, of 117 Court St., died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, in the Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Born March 8, 1924, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. Thompson and Rosetta Bowyer. Mrs. Chapman was a homemaker and was affiliated with the World Wide Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Chapman Sr.; a brother, Herbert Thompson; and a sister, Ruth Dempsey. Survivors include a son, Ronald Chapman Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; two granddaughters, Barbara Susan Chapman of Winter Springs, Fla., and Carolina Elizabeth Chapman of Clairmont, Fla.; and a sister, Buelah Prather of Westland, Mich. Services will be 11 a.m. today at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Wallace York officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill. Fink, 78, of Beckley, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at her home following a long illness. Born Dec. 12, 1921, in Crawfordsville, Ind., she was the daughter of Edith Morgan of Rainelle and the late Richard S. Quick. Mrs. Fink was of the United Methodist faith and was retired from the Accounting Board of the City of Beckley Sanitary Department. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Fink; a granddaughter, Kimberly Hancock; and her father, Richard S. Quick. Survivors include her mother, Edith Morgan Quick of Rainelle; two daughters, Patricia Cannon of Beckley and Margaret Hancock of Beckley; a son, Everette Butch Fink of Beckley; two sisters, Doraline Moore of Rainelle and Joan Burns of Rainelle; seven granddaughters and 13 great-grandchildren. Private services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated. Her ashes will be interred in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Jennings, 79, formerly of Pocahontas County, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness. Born April 14, 1921, in Pocahontas County, he was the son of the late Samuel Henry and Ethel Schoonover Jennings. Mr. Jennings was a graduate of Green Bank High School and was retired from the U.S. Forestry Service at Bartow, where he was a clerk and assistant business manager. He also served as volunteer fire dispatcher for Monongahela National Forest. Mr. Jennings was a member of the Lions Club both at Durbin and Lewisburg since 1946, and was past president, secretary, tailtwister and zone chairman. He was a member of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church at Lewisburg and was a member of Liberty Presbyterian Church at Green Bank. Sam was a member of the Riverside Lodge No. 124 at Cass since 1951; the Charles-ton Valley of the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree KCCH, Noble Beni Kedem Shrine in Charleston, Royal Arch Mason, Greenbrier Chapter No. 21, Knight Greenbrier Commandry No. 15, Royal Order of Scotland, and was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 111 of Charleston. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran from 1943 to 1946 where he served in Japan and the Philippine islands. He was preceded in death by his wife and very close companion of 52 years, Ruth Beard Jennings, in 1996, who was a former first-grade teacher at Bartow; they were married Aug. 11, 1944. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Louise Osborne; and two brothers, Lyle and Keith Jennings. Survivors include two sisters, Alice Gwendolyn Ervine of Summersville and Ethel Virginia Spencer of Dayton, Ohio. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Arbovale Cemetery, Arbovale, with the Revs. Dexter Taylor and David Rittenhouse officiating. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Born Nov. 3, 1924, in Phyllis, Ky., he was the son of the late Cass and Gustie Taylor Justice. Mr. Justice was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Mullens, and was a coal miner, having retired from the Itmann Coal Co. with 35 years of service. Survivors include his companion, Ola M. Bradley; four daughters, Debbie Delgado, Judy McClung, and Joetta Woodrum, all of Tampa, Fla., and Viola Justine Bradley of Bud; a son, Eddie Dean Justice of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Brook Casey and Easter Taylor, both of Phyllis, Ky.; two brothers, Kelly and Elliott Justice, both of Phyllis, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Lafferty WRISTON - Mark Anthony Lafferty, 33, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Wriston. Mr. Shawver moved to Cabin Creek 26 years ago, was a U.S. Air Force veteran and insurance salesman and carpenter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Shawver. Survivors include his longtime companion, Essie Harlow of Cabin Creek; three brothers, Harold Shawver of Beckley, Ray Shawver and wife, Thelma, of Beckley, and Lee Shawver and wife, Karen, of Bradenton, Fla.; three nieces and one nephew. Cline Shields, 80, died Wed-nesday, April 19, 2000, in a Princeton hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 16, 1919, at Man, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Virgie Bailey Cline. Mrs. Shields was a retired school teacher with 42 years of service in the Wyoming County school system. She was a member of the Shields Memorial Baptist Church and was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Clifton Shields, in 1990; and a sister, Irene England. Survivors include a son, Lendell Clifton Shields of Radford, Va.; two daughters, Gwenda Lee Carstensen and her husband, Ronald, of Elyria, Ohio, and Sharon Ann Conner and her husband, Darvin of Princeton; five grandchildren, Rhonda Reedy, Robin Calo, Heather Bathurst, Glen Shields and Jennifer Shields; and five great-grandchildren.
