Born March 20, 1911, at Mossy, he was the son of the late Brad and Charlotte Scarbro Aliff. Mr. Aliff was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include a sister, Clara Wriston of Route 1, Scarbro; one brother, Henry Milton "Buck" Aliff of Route 1, Scarbro; and several nieces and nephews. Roy Samuel Burwell SINKS GROVE ­ Roy Sam-uel Burwell, 76, passed away Saturday, April 24, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Nov. 13, 1922, at Sinks Grove, he was the son of the late Harry Harrison and Lotis Ray Burwell. Mr. Burwell was a well known farmer and highly respected member of the community. He retired in 1988 from Allied-Bendix in Baltimore and was member, trustee and elder of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church at Sinks Grove. He was also a charter member of the Bluegrass Ruritan Club, W.Va. 4-H All Stars and co-organizational leader of the Better Builders 4-H Club of Sinks Grove. He was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Lee Burwell. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Edna Wiley Burwell; two daughters, Freda Mae Bostic and her husband, Richard, and Shirley Jean Carter and her husband, Glenn, both of Sinks Grove; two sons, Roy Marcus "Mark" Burwell and his wife, Kim, of Point Pleasant and Roger Malcolm Cosgro and his fiancee, Maria Shevchuk, of Harpers Ferry; five granddaughters, Stacy Carter and her fiance, Roger Bennett, Jennifer Bostic Ratliff and fiancee, Jody Church, Alicia and Missy Bostic and Amy Burwell; two grandsons, Nathan Carter and Samuel Burwell; great-granddaughter Taylor Brook Ratliff; one brother, Granville Burwell and wife, Pauline, of Pickaway; sister-in-law Betty Burwell of Pickaway; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church at Sinks Grove, with the Revs. James H. Halstead, Billy Reed Wickline, and Mikel Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery, Pickaway. Randy Thomas Cogar Randy Thomas Cogar, 45, of Hico, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in a Fairmont hospital following a short illness. Born Oct. 7, 1953, at Fairmont, he was the son of Dorothy Ann Parker Cogar of Fairmont and the late Wesley Vernon Cogar. He was a 20-year resident of Hico, a member of Kesler Memorial Presbyterian Church of Hico and an engineer and surveyor. Other survivors include his wife, Teresa Maynor Cogar of Hico; two daughters, Jennifer Cogar at Fairmont and Vanessa Cogar at home. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kesler Memorial Presbyterian Church of Hico with the Rev. Acie Bryant and the Rev. Kenneth Hayes officiating. Comer Jr. PETERSTOWN ­ Howard E. "H.E." Comer Jr., 70, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in a Virginia hospital. Born Oct. 9, 1928, he was the son of the late Howard Earl and Lula Clark Comer. Mr. Comer graduated from Peterstown High School in 1945 and WVU in 1950. He was a professional electrical engineer and was employed by NASA in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. His professional career spanned 41 years from 1950-1991, during which time, in addition to NASA, he worked for Celanese Corp., Tennessee Valley Authority, Sperry Rand Corp., Booz-Allen Applied Research, and Teledyne-Brown Engineering. During his career he also was associated with Comer Chevrolet of Lindside. Mr. Comer was a Presbyterian by faith and served as deacon, elder and also president of Men of the Church in three different cities. In honor of his dedication, planning and development of the student athletic fields at James Monroe High School, the athletic fields were named H.E. Comer, Jr. Sports Complex. He was presented with the Distinguished West Virginian Award by the governor of West Virginia in recognition of his accomplishments. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Riley Comer; three daughters, Ann Griffin and her husband, Patrick, of Chapel Hill, Ky., Kay Comer of Columbia, Md., and Lea Comer Anderson of Springfield, Va.; one son, Howard Earl Comer III and his wife, Vicki, of Durham, N.C.; three grandchildren, James and Catherine Griffin and Christopher Lee Anderson; one sister, Bobbie Jean Spangler and her husband, Charles "Coonie" Spangler, of Peterstown; one nephew, Mike Spangler of Charleston; and one niece, Cindy Adkins of Alexandria, Va. Dillon Jarrell Sylvia Lee Dillon Jarrell, 84, of Naoma, went to be with the Lord Friday, April 23, 1999, following a short illness. Born Feb. 16, 1915, at Sandlick, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Nanny Rorrer Dillon. Mrs. Jarrell was a homemaker and she was a 58-year member and treasurer for 32 years of the Naoma United Methodist Church. She was also a charter member of the Eastern Star at Whitesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Jarrell, an infant grandson, and two brothers, Vesper and Dewey Dillon. She is survived by five sons, Roger Hamilton and wife, Maxine, Raymond Jarrell Jr. and wife, Kim, and Raymond Jarrell Sr. all of Naoma, Lloyd Jarrell and his wife, Mary, of Rock Creek, and Donald Jarrell and wife, Bernice, of Surveyor; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren, and a best friend, Melba Meadows of Naoma. Born Jan. 28, 1928, at Danese, he was the son of the late Everett B. and Lola Bernice Fox Martin. The Rev. Martin was a lifelong resident of Danese and was also an ordained Baptist minister. He was lay speaker for the United Methodist Church, was ordained minister for the Free Will Baptist and was presently pastoring at Clifftop Community Church and Judson Free Will Baptist Church. He was also a member of B.M.W.E. Lodge 139 of Rainelle and was a retired track foreman for C&O Railway with 38 years of service. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Patton, and four brothers, Norman, Alvin, Stanley and Houston Martin. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Barnett Martin; one daughter, Frances J. Bennett of Danese; four sons, Clarence E. Martin of Danese, Daniel Martin of Layland, Gary Martin of Victor and Michael Martin of Danese; five sisters, Georgia Baxter of Tallahassee, Fla., Alverta Davis of Yucca Valley, Calif., Imogene Aliff of Orient, Ohio, Kathryn Parrish of Thurmont, Md., and Uldine Welch of Covington, Va.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Born Aug. 1, 1910, in Kingsport, Tenn., he was the son of the late Lisha and Eliza Babb Owens. Mr. Owens was a retired coal miner, was of the UMWA and also was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Spencer Owens, four sisters and a brother. Survivors include his wife, Esther Barr Owens of Sophia; a son, Bobbie E. Owens and wife, Judith Gail, of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, Kelly Owens of Valencia, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Deana Owens and Danny Owens both of Las Vegas, Nev. Weaver Jewell Brammer Weaver, 77, of Mullens, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born June 16, 1921, at Matoaka, she was the daughter of Ruth Fanning Brammer of Mullens and the late Paul Brammer. Mrs. Weaver was a lifelong resident of Mullens and attended the Methodist Church. She also was an operator for C&P telephone with 20 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil L. Weaver Sr.; two sisters, Betty Spade and Pembrely Beavers; and two brothers, Paul Brammer Jr. and Billly Brammer. Survivors include two daughters, Myria and her husband, Eddie Burrell, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Shelia and her husband, Lonnie Prillaman, of Mullens; two sons, Basil "Junior" Weaver and his wife, Donna, of Mullens and Charles R.
