Register Herald Obituaries for April 28, 1999 Robert Armstrong Sr. POINT PLEASANT - Robert Lee Armstrong Sr., 69, formerly of Fayetteville, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a Cleveland hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 14, 1930, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Rodney R. Armstrong, who died July 16, 1976, and Myrtle Ruth Garten Armstrong, who died March 19, 1994. Mr. Armstrong was a retired crane operator with Ravenswood Aluminum Corp., a member of Bellemcad United Methodist Church and the United Steel Workers union. He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arverill Ray Armstrong. Survivors include his wife, Merle Y. Hall Armstrong; two sons, Robert Lee "Chip" Armstrong Jr. of New Orleans and John Daniel Armstrong of St. Albans; a daughter, Laura Lane Cullen of Letart; two brothers, Rodney Garton Armstrong of Akron, Ohio, and James Randolph Armstrong of Jackson, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Ann Gavin of Fort Myers, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Revs. Brian May and Ray McClung officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Born July 27, 1966, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Douglas L. Doss Sr. of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Shirley Lovell Doss of Cleveland. Mrs. Britton was a homemaker. Other survivors include her husband, Joseph Britton Jr.; four daughters, Amber Doss, Alyssa, Misty and Sasha Britton, all of Stover; a son, Joseph Britton III of Stover; a brother, Douglas Lee Doss Jr. of California; and a sister, Crystal Doss of Cleveland. Thelma Ann Carroll QUINWOOD - Thelma Ann Carroll, 86, died Monday, April 26, 1999, in a Fairlea hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 24, 1912, at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Luther Harvey and Mabel Barrett Rutherford. Mrs. Carroll was a homemaker and a member of Quinwood Baptist Church and Quinwood Rebekah Lodge No. 36. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Toots" Carroll, on Jan. 11, 1992; two brothers, Earl Rutherford and C.W. Rutherford; and a sister, Lorene Carroll. Survivors include a daughter, Helen Ruth Dudley of Covington, Va.; three sons, Robert E. Carroll and his wife, Shirley, of Hines, Earl Carroll and his wife, Lana, of Covington and Charles Carroll and his wife, Evelyn, of Quinwood; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Hickok, 39, of 402 Parkway St., Beckley, died Monday, April 26, 1999, near Gilbert as the result of a car accident. Born Aug. 8, 1959, in Wise, Va., he was the son of Gladys Ray Hickok of Wise and the late Harold L. Hickok Sr. Mr. Hickok was senior marketing representative with Federated Insurance. He was a 1977 graduate of Mullens High School, a 1981 graduate of Concord College, where he was a member of the football team, and a member of Memorial Baptist Church, where he was involved in Promise Keepers, the drama ministry and served as an usher. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Raymond Sturgeon. Other survivors include his wife of 16 years, Paula Sturgeon Hickok; a son, Christopher Hickok at home; a daughter, Erin Michelle Hickok at home; two brothers, Harold L. Hickok Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Michael Hickok and his wife, Linda, of Chicago; a sister, Brenda Jo Ribbons and her husband, Thon, of Baja, Calif.; and a brother-in-law, Rod Sturgeon and his wife, Cheryl, of Houston. Lively ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Cobert Luther Lively, 55, formerly of Smithers, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a Maryland medical center following an apparent heart attack. Born Sept. 11, 1943, at Smithers, he was a graduate of Rainelle High School. Mr. Lively was a 26-year resident of Annapolis, formerly of Wheaton, Md. At the time of his death, he was a security analyst for T. Rowe Price & Associates for the last three years. Prior to that he worked for Riggs Bank for 18 years, and he also worked 12 years for Hechingers. He was an avid golfer and boater and enjoyed deer hunting and computers. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis and Harold Lively; and a sister, Shirley Lively. Survivors include his mother, Mildred Lively of Charmco; his wife, Gaye Lively, whom he married in 1964; a son, Ralph Lively of Annapolis; a daughter, Melissa Lively of Arnold, Md.; four brothers, Robert and Paul Lively, both of Prince George, Va., Zach Lively of Columbus, Ohio, and Roy Lively of Quinwood; two sisters, Geraldine Buckland of Quinwood and Pam Velasquez of Prince George; and three grandchildren. Samuel Aaron Pitzer BALLARD - Samuel Aaron Pitzer, 19, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in a Roanoke, Va., hospital. Born Nov. 19, 1979, at Princeton, he was the son of LeRoy and Connie Shultz Pitzer of Ballard. He was employed with Jones Construction Co. in Blacksburg, Va., as a carpenter. He was a member of Orchard Christian Center and the Ballard Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher James Pitzer. Other survivors include a brother, Matthew Lee Pitzer of Ballard; his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth L. Shultz of Ballard; his paternal grandmother, Hazel Pitzer of Lindside.
