Register Herald Obituaries for April 29, 1999 Zella M. Alexander OAK HILL ‹ Zella M. Christian Alexander, 85, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in an Oak Hill care center following a long illness. Born March 22, 1914, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Minnie Smith Christian. Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker and member of the Jones Avenue First Church of God. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Furman "Pat" Alexander, on July 15, 1984; and a son, Bob Alexander. Survivors include a son, Don G. Alexander and his wife, June, of Oak Hill; six grandchildren, Greg Alexander and his wife, Tammie, Steve Alexander and his wife, Joyce, Tammi Richardson and her husband, Keith, Debbie Crane and her husband, Whit, Joe Alexander and his wife, Becky, and Vickie Wood; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Shupe and the Rev. Tonya Shupe officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Harless GILBERT ‹ June Montgomery Harless, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Born July 16, 1920, at Holden, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Emma Hall Montgomery. Mrs. Harless was a member of the Gilbert Presbyterian Church and was the past moderator of the Women of the Church. She was a graduate of Gilbert High School and member of the Class of 1938. Mrs. Harless managed the fiscal side of the early Gilbert Lumber Co. and as the companies grew, she resumed her primary role as homemaker. She was an avid bird watcher and involved herself in identifying Appalachian wildflowers. During the last three years she was one of the primary forces behind the creation of the Larry Joe Harless Community Center, named after her son ‹ a place in Gilbert where children can play in a structured motivating environment and adults can come together in community activities. She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Joe Harless; three brothers, Earl, Jack and Carl; and a sister, Opal. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, James H. "Buck" Harless, businessman and philanthropist and owner of International Industries, Inc.; a daughter, Judith Ann Burgess of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Beverly Burgess of Bell Buckle, Tenn., Stephanie Burgess of Mobile, Ala., James H. Harless II and his wife, Sjon, of Mobile, and Maurice "M.K." Harless and his wife, Sharon, of Mobile; four great-grandchildren, James H. "Tripp" Harless III, Hope Archer Harless, Chelsea Harless and Kitty Harless, all of Mobile. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Gilbert Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Don Chichester of Roanoke, Va., assisted by the Rev. Tom Schuler of Williamson, officiating. Burial will follow in the Harless Family Cemetery on Betty Island, Gilbert. Donald W. Hickok Donald W. Hickok, 39, of 402 Parkway St., Beckley, died Monday, April 26, 1999, near Gilbert, from the result of a car accident. Born Aug. 8, 1959, in Wise, Va., he was the son of Gladys Ray Hickok of Wise and the late Harold L. Hickok Sr. Mr. Hickok was senior marketing representative with Federated Insurance. He was a 1977 graduate of Mullens High School, a 1981 graduate of Concord College where he was a member of the football team and a member of the Memorial Baptist Church where he was involved in the Promise Keepers, the Drama Ministry and served as an usher. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Raymond Sturgeon. Other survivors include his wife of 16 years, Paula Sturgeon Hickok; a son, Christopher Hickok at home; a daughter, Erin Michelle Hickok at home; two brothers, Harold L. Hickok Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Michael Hickok and his wife, Linda, of Chicago; a sister, Brenda Jo Ribbons and her husband, Thon, of Baja, Calif.; and a brother-in-law, Rod Sturgeon and his wife, Cheryl, of Houston, Texas. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Memorial Baptist Church, 1405 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with the Rev. Tim Roberts, the Rev. Paul Blizzard, the Rev. Mike Jicka and the Rev. Carlos Crews officiating. Liddle COVEL ‹ Hattie I. Liddle, 86, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at her home. Born April 24, 1913, in Tazewell, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Stevens and Josie White Stevens. Mrs. Liddle was a member of the Herndon Methodist Church, attended the Covel Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Women¹s Missionary. She was a retired dietitian at Wyoming General Hospital, Mullens, and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert J. Liddle in 1979; a daughter, Bernice Liddle; five brothers, Robert, Walter, Roy, Johnny and Bill; and five sisters, Maggie Sisson, Julie Lambert, Dealie Stout, Annie Beamon and Frances Conner. Survivors include three sons, Everett R. Liddle and his wife, Shelby, of Covel, Nolan S. Liddle of Yorktown, Va., and Thomas H. Liddle and his wife, Joan, of Yorktown; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Home Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, Princeton, with the Rev. Paul Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.
