Register Herald Obituaries for August 11, 1999 Minter J. Buckland FOREST HILL - Minter J. Buckland, 71, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born June 15, 1928, in Corrine, he was the son of the late Lona and Nettie Martin Buckland and lived most of his life at Forest Hill. Mr. Buckland was a retired employee of the West Virginia Department of Highways and a member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Buckland; a half brother, Elvyn Richards; and a half sister, Lorene Dillion. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Viola Lilly Buckland; two sons, John Eugene "Gene" Buckland and his wife, Connie, and Jefferson K. Buckland, all of Forest Hill; a daughter, Judy Bower and her husband, Benny, of Dublin, Va.; a sister, Sybil Bishop of Red Sulphur Springs; a half sister, Edith Bakalis of Forest Hill; and eight grandchildren. Craig Campbell LEWISBURG - B. Craig Campbell, 73, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at a Fairlea medical center following a short illness. Born April 16, 1926, in Minnehaha Springs, he was the son of the late Boyd L. and Maude Lockridge Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, and Lewisburg Country Club. He was past exalted ruler of Lewisburg Elks Lodge 1758 and was a World War II Navy veteran. Mr. Campbell was a graduate of Lewisburg High School, Greenbrier Military School and Salem College. He was a teacher with over 32 years of service and taught at Greenbrier Military School. He retired as a teacher from Greenbrier East High School and was a member of the Greenbrier County Retired Teachers Association. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Allen Campbell; a son, Steven Campbell; a sister, Janet Frey; and three brothers, Lacy, Bedford and Newton Campbell. Survivors include his wife, Wilma McMillion Campbell; a sister, Charlotte Carney of Kankakee, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Alma Campbell of Lewisburg and Nelsene McMillion of White Sulphur Springs; two brothers-in-law, Frank Farkas of Crichton and Ralph Simmons of Roanoke, Va.; two aunts, Lillian Karicofe and her husband, Orville, of Afton, Va., and Margaret Barrett of Richmond, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Chambers, 88, of 111 Swain St., Beckley, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, in a Beckley nursing center following a long illness. Born Oct. 10, 1910, in Bramwell, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Frank Muse and Mrs. L. Muse. Mrs. Chambers was a member of First Baptist Church, North Beckley, the church choir and a member of the New Era District Singing Convention. She was also a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Chambers, in 1989. Survivors include two nieces she raised, Shirley Payne of Newark, N.J., and Ernestine Blake and her husband, the Rev. Ray S. Blake, of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Renee M. Blake-Smith, Ray S. Blake Jr., David A. Born Dec. 3, 1926, in Harvey, she was the daughter of the late Ebb and Amy L. Allen Criss. Miss Criss was a retired accountant for Alanson's Inc., Delray Beach, Fla. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Beckley. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Levi Burton Criss. Survivors include five sisters, Mary Lou Sullivan, Lois Hall Robinson, Velma Bowling and Connie Holley, all of Oak Hill, and Phyllis Sullivan of Charleston; a brother, Roger Criss of North Olmstead, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Edward McGuire FAYETTEVILLE - Edward McGuire, 80, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, in Beckley VA hospital following a long illness. Born March 27, 1919, in Gauley Bridge, he was the son of the late James McGuire and Ethel Eagle McGuire. Mr. McGuire was a disabled coal miner and a veteran of the US Army Signal Corps in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Beulah May Holcomb McGuire; two sons, Patrick L. of Montgomery and Timothy E. at home; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. McGuire donated his body to medical science and will be honored with a memorial service Saturday at Oak Hill Alliance Church, 914 Central Ave., Oak Hill. Hazel Louise McMillion ALDERSON - Hazel Louise McMillion, 61, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at her residence following a long illness. Born July 19, 1938, in Lester, she was the daughter of the late Avery and Ocie Tolliver McMillion. Mrs. McMillion was a homemaker and attended Broad Run Baptist Church, where she was one of the founders of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry R. and Randy R. McMillion; and a sister, Edith Cook. Jordan Marie Richmond TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. - Miss Jordan Marie Richmond, 9, of 139 Gina Lane, Taylorsville, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 3, 1999, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, Lenoir, N.C., following injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born Jan 13, 1990, in Caldwell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Michael and Sonia Buss Richmond of Taylorsville. Miss Jordan would have been a fourth-grade student at Wittenburg Elementary School. She was a member of Tri-City Baptist Church, where she was a member of the children's church. She was an honor student and cheerleader at Wittenburg Elementary. Jordan's life was a bright, precious gift, and she was a blessing to all who knew her. Born Nov. 28, 1906, in Bluefield, she was the daughter of the late H.M. Brown and Mary Pinkard Brown. Mrs. Robinson was a school teacher, graduate of Bluefield State College and had completed graduate work at West Virginia University. She was a member of Central Baptist Church for 75 years and a member of Dorcas Missionary Society and Zeta Beta Sorority. She taught in Skelton, North Beckley, Cranberry and other areas in Raleigh County. She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Survivors include a sister, Alma B. Wooten of Greystone Inn in Beaver; three nephews, John W. Brown Jr. and Melvin C. Brown, both of Akron, Ohio, and Rev. Leon H. Born Aug. 24, 1923, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late James and Mattie Marie Ratliff Fullen. Mrs. Travis worked for Richmond Cleaners and Laundry for 35 years and was a 42-year member of First Christian Church, Beckley. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Kiddy. Survivors include her husband, Charles Travis; a son, Timothy Travis of Beckley; a daughter, Judith Belba and her husband, Eugene, of Westerville; a sister, Caroline Quesenberry of Durham, N.C.; four grandchildren, Allison Merdith and her husband, Scott, of Newark, Ohio, Robert Kink of Durham and Candice Kink and Cie Ann Belba, both of Westerville; eight great-grandchildren; an aunt, Mary Alice Yazel of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a nephew, Fred Quesenberry and his wife, Alice,of Durham. Wright Jason Brent Wright, 19, of Pleasant Hills, Beckley, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, near Statesville, N.C. Born Oct. 3, 1979, in Beckley, he was the son of Arthur Alvin and Terry Wilson Wright. Jason spent his childhood at Pleasant Hills. He graduated with the Class of 1998 at Woodrow Wilson High School, and was No. 66 on the Flying Eagles football team. He lettered all three years at Woodrow Wilson and also all three years for for the Park Junior High School Road Runners football team. He also lettered in wrestling. He was a member of Mabscott Christian Baptist Church, and in his leisure time he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was formerly employed by Total Image Automotive Detailing and most recently was employed as an electrician's assistant for Overcast Electrical Co., Mooresville, N.C. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Samuel Wright; and his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Vernon Wilson. Other survivors include two brothers, Kirt Wright and his wife, Donna, of Eccles and Alvin Wright and his wife, Penny, of Daniels; three nephews and a niece, Joseph and Bonnie Wright and Justin and Zachary Wright; his paternal grandmother, Gladys Mewbourne and her husband, G.G., of Beckley; a great-aunt, Jeanne Mitchell, of Crab Orchard; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
