Register Herald Obituaries for August 14, 1999 Maggie Blankenship Maggie Ethel Blankenship, 98, of Beckley, formerly of Tazewell, Va., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, following a short illness. Born Aug. 22, 1900, in Surry County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Stephen Masten Simmons and Laura Ann Coe. Mrs. Blankenship was a homemaker and a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church. She lived most of her life in Tazewell, Va., and was a resident of Beckley since 1962. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Herbert Blankenship; three sons, Ellis Pyles, Carl Lowe and William Homer Blankenship; two daughters, Opal Cannoy and Reva Harmon; four sisters, Lola Southern, Beatrice Harry, Lula Ball and Beulah Johnson; and two brothers, Claude and Calvin Simmons. Survivors include one son, C. Harold Blankenship and his wife Marlene of Beckley; two sisters, Myrtle Hill of Radford, Va., and Agnes Lawson of Doran, Va.; 26 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Frank McGahey officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Richlands, Va., at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Cody Harmon Jr. officiating. Friends called Friday at the funeral home and may call one hour before service today. Serving as pallbearers are grandsons, David, Mark and Joseph Blankenship, and great-grandsons, Ryan, Aaron and Brandon Neal and Kevin Snodgrass. Harvey PETERSTOWN - Jack D. Harvey, 78, formerly of Rock Camp, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, in a Pulaski, Va., hospital. Born May 27, 1921, at Rock Creek, he was the son of the late Edward E. "E.E." and Mae Harvey. Mr. Harvey was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, a timberman, a former Monroe County deputy sheriff, a charter member of the Rock Camp-Wikel Ruritan Club and a member of Rock Camp United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth S. Harvey, in February 1997. Survivors include a son, Jack D. Harvey Jr. and wife Patsy of Linside; a daughter, Betty Smith and husband Tommy of Rich Creek, Va.; five grandchildren, Jill Ballard and husband Mick, April Redden, Wendy Cantrell and husband Jonathan, Jackie Pennington and husband John, and Butch Watson and wife Angie; and five great-grandchildren. Harry Watson Holliday SMOOT - Harry Watson Holliday, 94, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Feb. 5, 1905, at Elton, he was the son of the late Thena Howell and Michael Cleveland Holliday. Mr. Holliday was a retired farmer, resident of Smoot for the past 10 years and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Ocie Ellen Martin Holliday; two daughters, Bernice Keiffer of Smoot and Pansy Miller and husband Dale of Naoma; one sister, Lorene Withrow of Ronceverte; one brother, William Holliday of Fairlea; four grandchildren, Arthena Piercy of Meadow Bridge, Florence Keiffer of Smoot, Mary Ellen Barr and husband Robert of Florida and James Miller of Naoma; four great-grandchildren, April Denny of North Carolina, Lex Barr of West Palm Beach, Fla., Alex Reggie Redden of Meadow Bridge and Brandon Wayne Ayers of Smoot; and one great-great-grandson, Duncan Denny of North Carolina. Kittle III Dr. Lewis Howard "Butch" Kittle III, 61, of South Kanawha Street, Beckley, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at his home. Born June 2, 1938, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Lewis H. Kittle Jr. and Alene Miller Kittle. Dr. Kittle was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in the class of 1956. He attended Concord College and Marshall University and received a B.S. degree in geology and pre-dentistry from WVU in 1962. He received his doctor of dental surgery degree from WVU College of Dentistry in 1966, where he was elected a member of Psi Omega dental fraternity. Dr. Kittle entered the Army in 1966 as a captain. He trained in Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, and served as dental officer at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. Following his discharge from the Army, he returned to Beckley and entered the private practice of dentistry. He practiced dentistry for 30 years in Beckley. He served on the Board of Directors of the Raleigh County YMCA, was past president of the Raleigh County Dental Society, was a Community member of the Beckley Junior High School Improvement Committee, was a member and deacon of the First Christian Church, and was a member of the Beckley Elks Lodge, Black Knight Country Club and Glade Springs Country Club. Dr. Kittle was also a National Tree Farmer and planted thousands of Christmas trees at his farm in Grandview. He was a student of the study of wine and connoisseur of wines. He was an expert fly fisherman, an avid golfer and woodworking craftsman. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Nancy Scott Kittle, whom he married Aug. 14, 1959; a son, Scott Lewis Howard Kittle of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Katherine Kittle Flood and husband Timothy Flood of Charlotte, N.C., and Terasa Lynn Robertson of Charleston; two sisters-in-law, Joan Groves and husband Blaine Groves of Martinsburg and Hal Lynne Scott Micali and husband Robert Ritter of Los Altos, Calif. A celebration service of his life will be held at Danielšs Vineyard, located on the Glen White Road, formerly Twin Oaks Golf Course, at 3 p.m. today with the Rev. Russel Smith officiating. Virginia Lee Lilly Virginia Lee Lilly, 87, of Dunns, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in a Beckley area hospital following a long illness. Born July 26, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Sanford and Eliza Jane Lilly Akers. Mrs. Lilly was a homemaker and was of the Holiness faith. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Geraldine Akers, Reba Lilly, Julie Cadle and Mary Meadows; four brothers, Coolidge, Andrew, Sherman and Hewey Akers; a granddaughter, Bonnie Hatcher. Survivors include two sons, Emerson Lilly and wife Ingrid of Brandon, Fla., and Harry Meadows and wife Sherrie of Florence, S.C.; a daughter, Juanita Laverne White of Princeton; two sisters, Lucille Graham of Camp Creek and Dorcas Meadows of Beckley; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Wintfred Perry LYNCO - Wintfred Perry, 68, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born Feb. 9, 1931, at Kistler, he was the son of the late Purce and Estella Roy Perry. Mr. Perry was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and a Korean Air Force veteran. Mr. Perry was also a member of the National Riflemen Association and a lifetime member of the North American Hunters Club. He was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. He was preceded in death by a son, Delmar Dewayne Perry; and two brothers, Elvin Perry and Henry Lee Perry. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Molline Blackburn Perry; one daughter, Teresa Hash and husband Randy of Kopperston; one brother, Burton Perry and his wife Audrey of Cyclone; one sister, Thelma Juanita Paytner and husband Joe Ed of Oceana; and three grandsons, Randal "R.E." Fairy Elliot Skelton Fairy Elliot Skelton, 76, of Beaver, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, in her home following a sudden illness. Born Dec. 7, 1922, at Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late James D. and Grace James Elliot. Mrs. Skelton spent her childhood at Blue Jay. She was a 42-year resident of Beaver, where she was a very active member of the Blue Jay United Methodist Church. She was the church organist for many years and also was the pianist for the Senior Citizens Group at Daniels. Mrs. Skelton retired from Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital and was a member of AARP. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lee Skelton, on Nov. 22, 1997; two daughters, Janet Yvonne Skelton and Judith Fries; a brother, Ray Elliot; and four sisters, Bridgie Moye, Belva James, Eula Carter and Nedra Jones. Survivors include a son, Donald B. Skelton and wife Nancy of Archdale, N.C.; a son-in-law, George Fries; two grandsons, Michael and Christopher Skelton; a granddaughter, Susan Shumate; a great-grandson, Brandon Lee Skelton; two brothers, Omar Elliot of Blue Jay and Paul C. Born Nov. 21, 1927, at Bellepoint, she was the daughter of the late Carl W. Meadows and Annie Mann Meadows Vaughn, and she had lived the early part of her life in Summers County. Mrs. Spade was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore "Weezer" Spade, May 13, 1982; a brother, Billy Carl Meadows; and one sister, Lahoma Kessler. Survivors include a son, Theodore L. "Pee Wee" Spade Jr. of Daniels; two daughters, Mary Ann Spade Hatcher of Daniels and Alice L. "Bill" Sutphin, 85, of Oak Hill, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in an Oak Hill medical center following a long illness. Born Aug. 8, 1999, at Cabin Creek, he was the eldest son of the late William and Verna Lafferty Sutphin. Mr. Sutphin worked for 18 years and retired as foreman for New River Co., Summerlee. He joined the Prudential Companies in 1946, served 26 years and retired as staff manager in the Montgomery office. He was also a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, Donally Bible Class, and had served as a deacon for many years. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Bessie Cantley Sutphin; two sons, the Rev. William A. Sutphin and wife Janet of Kernersville, N.C., and Dennis R. Sutphin of New Port Richey, Fla.; a daughter, Susan K. Johnson and husband Randy of Lewisburg; two brothers, Delbert R. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and member of the Piney View Church of Christ and had been a resident of Raleigh County for over 68 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elgie Thompson Sr.; a son, Elgie Thompson Jr.; a granddaughter, Kathy Sampson; three brothers and five sisters.
