Born June 24, 1934, at Bradshaw, Mr. Atwell was a bulldozer operator for Eller Inc. He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at Stringtown Road, Hico. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gerald. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Joy; their four children, Theresa and her husband Bill, Jeff and his wife Karin, Randy and his wife Linda, and Ruth and her husband Jim; eight grandchildren, Christopher, Darrin, Tiffany, Stephen, Jarod, Jonathan, Rebecca and Keaton; two great-grandchildren, Serena and Caroline; and a brother, Tom, of Florida. Bernard Dorothy Moran Bernard, 74, of Oak Hill, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born April 22, 1925, at Alderson, she was the daughter of the late James and Nellie Forren Moran. Mrs. Bernard was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bernard, three brothers and one sister. Survivors include a sister, Tennis Parrish of Oak Hill; a sister-in-law, Lettie Moran of Bluff City, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. A private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Florence E. Legg HICO - Florence Evelyn Legg, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, following a short illness. Born April 12, 1918, in Jen-key, she was the daughter of the late Omar Hypes and Maude Nutter Hypes. Mrs. Legg was a lifelong resident of Hico, a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church of Hico and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin S. "Johnny Legg," Aug. 20, 1984; and three sons, Curtis Melvin Legg, Roger Legg and Marshall Legg. Survivors include four daughters, Kay Frances Cameron of Salem, Ohio, Brenda Joyce Legg of Yuma, Ariz., Rebecca Ann Dufour of Ansted and Debbie Gray of Hico; five sons, Michael Allen Legg of Hico, Jerry Lee Legg of Hico, Donald Legg of Hico, Ronald Legg of Hico and Billy Dean Legg of Hico; two sisters, Phala Beddow of Medford, Ore., and Virginia Skaggs of Ansted; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with the Rev. Bill Kincaid officiating. Burial will follow in Legg Cemetery, Hico. Cochran Pack Susie Faye Cochran Pack, 87, of Jumping Branch, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, in a Beckley area hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 10, 1911, at Jumping Branch, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. "Rob" and Virginia Bell Pack Cochran, and had lived most of her life at Jumping Branch. Mrs. Pack was a homemaker and a faithful member of the Bluestone Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus Hershel Pack, April 1, 1978; a grandson, Rodney H. Pack II; three brothers, Fred, Mike and Glen Cochran; and four sisters, Mattie Simmons, Polly Vest Ward, Lena Bennett and Ruby Cole. Survivors include a son, Rodney H. Pack and wife Dana of Alderson; and a host of close friends and relatives. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Bluestone Baptist Church at Jumping Branch with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Wintfred Perry LYNCO - Wintfred Perry, 68, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born Feb. 9, 1931, at Kistler, he was the son of the late Purce and Estella Roy Perry. Mr. Perry was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and a Korean Air Force veteran. Mr. Perry was also a member in the National Riflemen Association and a lifetime member of the North American Hunters Club. He was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. He was preceded in death by a son, Delmar Dewayne Perry; and two brothers, Elvin Perry and Henry Lee Perry. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Molline Blackburn Perry; one daughter, Teresa Hash and husband Randy of Kopperston; one brother, Burton Perry and his wife Audrey of Cyclone; one sister, Thelma Juanita Paytner and husband Joe Ed of Oceana; and three grandsons, Randal "R.E." Hash of Princeton, N.C., Ryann Mack Hash and Daniel Dewayne Hash both of Kopperston; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Evans Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Jeff Elkins and Tommy Milam officiating. Entombment will follow in the Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny. Thompson, 63, formerly of Meadow Bridge, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in Arlington Northwest Community Hospital. Born Dec. 10, 1935, at Pax, he was the son of the late Earl and Icie Treadway Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a truck driver. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Thompson. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Gwinn Thompson; a son, Danny Ray Thompson; two daughters, Donna Dreier and Denise Miller all of Illinois; three sisters, Dorothy Marsh and Dawn Daniels both of Meadow Bridge and Arbutus Garber of Staunton, Va.; two brothers, Billy Thompson of Servern, Md., and Leroy Thompson of Las Vegas; and seven grandchildren. Arrangements by Smathers Funeral Home, Rainelle. Joseph W. Wood PORT ORANGE, Fla. - Joseph W. "Buck" Wood, 84, formerly of Beckley, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999. Born in Raleigh County, Mr. Wood lived in Helen before moving to Beckley. He was a retired electrician foreman for 46 years with Eastern Gas and Fuel. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church, Palmetto, Fla., who loved the Lord and lived by his example. He enjoyed working at church on the Christmas tree and other functions requiring a handyman. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Sue Sweeney of Port Orange, Fla.; three daughters, Sally Deaner and husband Charles of Port Orange, Lynda Shelton and husband Hop of San Antonio, and Donna Osborne and husband Richie of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Wood of Beckley and Lola Maynor of Beckley; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, very special cousin Gloria Sweeney and nieces and nephews.
