Register Herald Obituaries for August 17, 1999 Frank L. Akers Sr. RAVENSWOOD - Frank L. Akers, Sr., 85, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born June 5, 1914, in Tazewell, Va., he was the son of the late Robert and Viola Asbury Akers Sr. Mr. Akers was the former owner and operator of Frank's Esso in Ravenswood and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 132, Huntington. He was a member of the Ravenswood Athletic Boosters and was very active in the support of children and athletics in Ravenswood and Jackson County. He was considered a good asset to the community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Akers; a daughter, Rosemary Akers Saia; three brothers, Andy, Edgar and Melvin; and a sister, Katherine Kinder. Survivors include two sons, Frank Akers Jr. of Ripley and Michael Akers of Salem, Va.; sisters, Mildred Pennington and Margaret Rodriguez of Tazewell, Va., Hazel Shouse of Dublin, Va., Ella Stephenson of Clairmont, Va., Barnzie Lewis of Havre de Grace, Md., and Mary Wiseman of Fayetteville; two brothers, Robert Akers Jr. of Forest Hill, Md., and Jim Akers of Tazewell, Va.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Friends called 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Casto Funeral Home, Ravenswood, and may call 10 to 10:30 a.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill. Archie PETERSTOWN - James Curtis Archie, 64, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at his home. Born March 28, 1935, at Besoco, he was the son of the late Curtis and Thelma Lilly Archie. Mr. Archie was formerly employed by Rauland Corporation in Chicago, and was a retired coal miner for Consolidation Coal Co., Buchanon, Va., for 20 years. He was a member of Peterstown United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Crawford, Norma Lilly, and Rachel Wilburn. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Janice Shrewsbury Archie; two sons, Dwayne Archie of Peterstown and Steven Archie of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers, Charles Alexander and his wife, Susie, of Peterstown, and Earsel Alexander and his wife, Nancy, of Bethany, Ill.; a sister, Hattie Bolen of Sullivan; his mother-in-law, Dora Shrewsbury of Coal City; his former daughter-in-law, Allison Archie of Fairlawn, Va.; and three grandchildren, Candice, Matthew and Heath. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peterstown United Methodist Church with Dr. John Sauvage and the Rev. Scott Sears officiating. Born April 3, 1900, in Crumpler, she was the daughter of the late Trimley and Elizabeth Harless Mills. Mrs. Fix was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Baptist Church at Forest Hill. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Fix, in 1968; two sons, Robert and William Fix; three daughters, Virginia Vaughn, Nellie Lowe and June Fix; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Dennis R. Fix and wife, Ann, of Salem, Va., Billy F. Fix and wife, Linda, of Blairsville, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. Raymon Herron Raymon Herron, 69, of Purity Hill, Eccles, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born June 7, 1930, in Eccles, he was the son of the late Mack and Ella Brewer Herron. Mr. Herron was a lifelong resident of Eccles and a graduate of Trap Hill High School. He entered the U.S. Navy at age 21 and served during the Korean Conflict, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Navy Occupation Service Ribbon for service in China and Korea. He was a retired coal miner from Westmoreland Coal Co. at Eccles with 36 years of service. He attended Pack's Branch Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Harvey; and a brother, Grover Herron. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Barker Herron; two sons, Jeff Herron of Concord, N.C., and Larry Herron of Beckley; a grandson, Christopher Matthew Herron of Concord, N.C.; four brothers, Hubert Herron of Beckley, Carl Herron of Shady Spring, Buddy R. Herron of Columbus, Ohio, and Kenneth Herron of Daniels; special and loving niece, Valerie Bynum of Valerico, Fla.; a nephew, Mike Bresnahan Jr. of Round Rock, Texas; special friends, Loretta and Michael Muovich and their children, Melissa, Alyssa and Michael Wayne Muovich. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Nellie L. McComas Nellie Lee McComas, 86, of Flat Top, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born Aug. 10, 1913, in Flat Top, she was the daughter of the late Dr. E.C. and Orie B. Clark McComas. Mrs. McComas was retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education with 39 years of service. She last taught at Shady Spring Junior High School. During her tenure she also taught at Kilarney Elementary and Beaver Elementary and served as teacher-principal of Odd Elementary School. She was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and Concord College and earned her master's degree from West Virginia University. She was a member of the National and West Virginia Retired Teachers Association and was a former member of the National, West Virginia and Raleigh County Education Association. Mrs. McComas was a member of the Coal City Chapter No. 136, Order of the Eastern Star, Judea White Shrine Chapter No. 13 and the Beckley Woman's Club. She was a lifelong resident of Flat Top. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph C. McComas. Survivors include a nephew, Chris McComas of Flat Top; her sister-in-law, Gladys McComas of Flat Top; five cousins, Terrell Bolen, Sandra Pendleton, Bill Clark, Jack Clark and Lynn Richardson. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the George W. Seaver Chapel of the Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, with the Rev. Jack Barber officiating. Beulah Mae Shuck Beulah Mae "Boo Boo" Shuck, 84, of Beckley, formerly of Terry, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 20, 1915, at Crickmer, she was the daughter of the late Charles Oliver and Abbie Walker Kincaid. Mrs. Shuck was a homemaker, a member of the Terry Independent Christian Church, a wonderful Christian woman and faithful to the church for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd R. Shuck Sr.; a stepson, Lloyd R. Shuck Jr.; and a half brother, Charles Kincaid. Survivors include her stepmother, Alma Kincaid of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Linda Spradlin of Pasadena, Md., Sheila Campbell and husband, Bernard, of Shady Spring, and Darla Fritz and husband, David, of Daniels; a halfbrother, George Kincaid of Tampa, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. Gene Hall, Bill Lilly and Randy Mann officiating. Burial will follow in Anderson Cemetery, Maplewood.
