Register Herald Obituaries for August 19, 1999 George R. Altare ALDERSON - George Richard Altare, 77, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, in a Fairlea care center following a long illness. Born Nov. 10, 1921, in Otsego, he was the son of Mary Ellen Blake Altare of Fairlea and the late George Hill Altare. Mr. Altare was a retired engineer, having retired from West Virginia Power Co. in Hinton and Fairlea after 30 years of service. He was a 1939 graduate of Alderson High School and attended Concord College, Athens. Mr. Altare was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, and Tri County Memorial VFW Post 6723, Alderson. Other survivors include his wife, Ruth Fields Altare; a son, Rick Altare of Harrisonburg, Va.; a daughter, Mary Ruth Snedegar and her husband, Carl, of Alderson; three grandchildren, Jessica Snedegar of Alderson and Craig Altare and David Altare, both of Harrisonburg; and several nieces and nephews. Bunker RAINELLE - Sanford Parker Bunker, 71, was dead on arrival Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at a Fairlea hospital. Born May 16, 1928, in Newport, Vt., he was the son of the late Sanford and Gertrude Bennett Bunker. Mr. Bunker was a retired truck driver, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was of the Catholic faith. Survivors include his wife, Mary Brennan Bunker; two daughters, Judy Jackson of Bridgewater, Mass., and Sandra Bunker of Brockton, Mass.; and three sons, Steve Bunker of Norton, Mass., Phillip Bunker of West Bridgewater, Mass., and John Michael Bunker of Virginia. Robert L. Craghead ATHENS - Robert Lee Craghead, 61, of 414 State St., died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at a Marietta, Ohio, hospital. Born June 12, 1938, in East Gulf, he was the son of the late Chauncey B. and Mildred M. Pennington Craghead. Mr. Craghead was a graduate of Athens High School, Class of 1961, and was a member of Concord United Methodist Church, Athens. For many years, he was a resident of the Princeton Health Care Center on Courthouse Road. While he was a patient, he served as president of the resident council for many years. Survivors include two sisters, Mona Clark and her husband, Edward G., of Melbourne, Fla., and Barbara Murphy and her husband, Lawrence, of Speedway; nieces and nephews, Eric Clark and his wife, Sandra, Brian and Melanie Murphy; and two great-nieces, Paige and Amanda Clark. Jackson OAK HILL - Homer Lonzelle Jackson, 67, of 300 Broadway Ave., died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, in a Baltimore hospital following a short illness. Born Sept. 11, 1931, in London, he was the son of the late Homer L. Jackson Sr. and Lucy V. Roche Sheperdson. Mr. Jackson was retired from West Virginia University Institute of Technology after 34 years of service. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, London, served on the Deacon Board, Male Chorus and Senior Choir. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles H. Sheperdson, and his first wife, Carolyn I. Jackson. Survivors include his wife, Susie O. Jarrell MELBOURNE, Fla. - Gladys Emma Jarrell, 100, formerly of Millstone Drive, Beckley, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, in a Melbourne care center following a long illness. Born Feb. 22, 1899, in Wharton, she was the daughter of the late Robert Bruce and Roxie Frances Lane Jarrell. Mrs. Jarrell spent her childhood in Boone County and attended Concord Normal School. She taught in schools in the Chesapeake, W.Va., area during World War II and assisted her husband, the late J.T. Jarrell Sr., in his duties as the postmaster of Edwight for 12 years. Mrs. Jarrell was a member of the VA Medical Center Auxiliary where she volunteered for many years. She was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church and had been of the Presbyterian faith since the age of 8. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, AARP and the Navy Mothers Club. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jacob Bruce Jarrell, in 1992; and a grandson, Terry Lee Green. Survivors include a son, J.T. Jarrell and his wife, Rosabella, of Beckley; a daughter, Dardanella Jarrell Dilly and her husband, Marden "Jim," of Melbourne, formerly of Beckley; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Born March 6, 1922, in Assurance, he was the son of the late William S. and Alice J. Miller Mann. Mr. Mann was educated in Mercer County and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired employee of Horchst/Celanese Corp., Narrows, Va., with more than 44 years of service, retiring in 1984 from the Spinning Department. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Gladys C. Canterbury Mann; a sister, Muriel Pettrey; and four brothers, Harry, George, Edwin and Glendon Mann. Mr. Neel was a retired draftsman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a member of the Civil Air Patrol since 1942 and a member and elder of Carmel Presbyterian Church. He also attended Marshall University. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall A. and Brown S. Neel. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth Daniels Neel; two nephews, Jack M. Born Dec. 31, 1917, in Raleigh, he was the son of the late Charles Edgar Withrow and Henrietta Thompson Withrow Sevich. Mr. Withrow was a graduate of Mark Twain High School and attended Beckley College and Technical College in Toledo, Ohio. He was a World War II veteran with the 57th Field Artillery Battalion in the South Pacific and Aleutian Islands. He worked for Olin Mathasin Chemical Co. and retired from the Department of Natural Resources where he worked as a reclamatioin specialist. He served several years as recorder for the City of Sophia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph L. Withrow; and an infant sister. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mrs. W.W. "Jackie" Withrow; and special friends, Doris S.
