Register Herald Obituaries for August 22, 1999 Frank E. Coiner Jr. PENCE SPRINGS - Frank Emmett Coiner Jr., 76, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, in a Fairlea medical center following a long illness. Born July 17, 1923, at Pence Springs, he was the son of the late Frank Emmett Coiner Sr. and Hattie Miller Coiner. Mr. Coiner was a lifelong resident of Pence Springs and worked for Federal Bureau of Prisons at Alderson before retiring in 1977 after 20 years of service. He was a 1940 graduate of Talcott High School and a member of Pence Springs Community Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, trustee, deacon and adult Sunday school teacher. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, 88th Armored Division, from March 1943 to January 1946, and served in the Battle of the Bulge. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Frances Wickline Coiner; two brothers, John and Harry Coiner; and three sisters, Gertrude Coiner, Frances Dotson and Cleo Wiseman. Survivors include his wife, Nell Loree Wickline Coiner; two daughters, Vena Coiner Persinger and her husband, Roger Lee, of Pence Springs and Anna Coiner Barker and her husband, Charles "Chuck" Andrew of Pence Springs; three sisters, Beulah V. Hall of Madison, Dorothy J. Coiner of Pence Springs and Ruby C. Nash and her husband, Clark, of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, Mark Ashley Persinger and his wife, Audrey, of Frankford and Christi Jenelle Barker of Pence Springs; a great-granddaughter, Madison Leigh Persinger of Frankford; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pence Springs Community Church with the Revs. Roger Persinger, J.D. Fox and Kermit Newberry officiating. Burial will follow in Haven of Rest Cemetery, Pence Springs. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour before services Monday at the church. Cole ANSTED - Tyrone Kenna Cole, 58, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in an Oak Hill medical center following a short illness. Born June 18, 1941, at Ansted, he was the son of the late Woodrow and Pauline Withrow Cole. Mr. Cole was a lifelong resident of Ansted and a member of the Lovers Leap Baptist Church, Ansted, where he was a senior usher for 23 years. He was disabled. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Carol Cole. Survivors include two brothers, Paul Cole and his wife, Beverly, of Ansted and Keith Cole and his wife, Norma; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lovers Leap Baptist Church, Ansted, with the Revs. Verlin Secrist and David Minturn officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor. Cureton-Carson DETROIT - Joan Imogene Cureton-Carson departed this life Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Oakwood Hospital, Dearborn, Mich., following a short illness. Born at Mount Hope, she was the daughter of Martha Ann Smith of Mount Hope and the late Samuel Green Smith. She was the second of three children. Joan accepted Christ and was baptized at Glorious Church of God in Christ, Mount Hope, at an early age. She also attended and graduated from DuBois High School in 1948. Shortly thereafter she married Warren G. Cureton, who preceded her in death, and gave birth to six children. Along with her family, she moved to Port Huron, Mich., and later Detroit, where she worked at Mark Allen for five years and Wayne County Community College for 20 years. She also received her associate's of arts degree from Wayne County Community College in May 1983. She married her loving and caring husband, Clarence Elliott Carson, on Aug. 3, 1985. She was a warm, vivacious, loving person who always put her family and friends first. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Smith; and a daughter, Janetta Favorite Cureton. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Elliott Carson; a brother, Truman Smith of Philadelphia; a son, Tony Giraud Cureton of Detroit; four daughters, Doncia Lee Littlejohn of Southfield, Mich., and Bonnie Ravana Mays, Kimberiea Ann Cureton and Angela Lynn Johnson, all of Detroit; three sons-in-law, Joseph Littlejohn, Jai Jaye Johnson and Jessie Mays; three stepchildren, Calvin Carson, Rudolph Carson and Michael Carson, all of Detroit; eight grandchildren, Michael F. Smith of Chicago, Candace Cureton, Traci Cureton, Joaquin Littlejohn, Cydney Cureton, Jalen Johnson, all of Detroit, and Brandon Mays and Sterling Mays, both of Baypoint, Calif.; a great-grandson, Isaiah Edwards; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Maddy of Oak Hill and the late Dallas L. Maddy Sr. Other survivors include a sister, Tammy M. Young and her husband, Keith, of Glen Daniel; a nephew, Jeremy W. Young of Glen Daniel; his grandfather, Fred Lucas of Glen Morgan; and several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. Sadie 'Sally' Redden Sadie "Sally" Redden, 87, of Mabscott, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born July 26, 1912, at Layland, she was the daughter of the late Cyrus Mignor and Mary Sanders. Mrs. Redden was a short-order cook and a resident of Mabscott for 53 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Redden; three sons, two daughters, two sisters and two grandsons. Survivors include four daughters, Charlotte Duncan of Ballard, Shirley White and her husband, Jack, of Fort Myers, Fla., Donnie Layne and her husband, James, of Calloway Heights and Barbara Brown and her husband, Don, of Berlin, Md.; four sons, Gene Redden and his wife, Margaret, of Ocala, Fla., Curtis Redden and his wife, Barbara, of San Diego, Roy Redden and his wife, Shelia, of Mabscott and Sherman Redden and his wife, Doralene, of Mabscott; a brother, Walter Mignor of Danese; 23 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Eva Faye Wood ANSTED - Eva Faye Wood, 87, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in an Oak Hill care center following a long illness. Born March 13, 1912, at Ansted, she was the daughter of the late Clayton Joshua Walters and Oaklee Ames Cavendish. Mrs. Wood was a lifelong resident of Fayette County, a member of Ansted Baptist Church, where she was a former teacher of the Naomi Bible Class, and a former teacher of Sunday school at Gauley Bridge Baptist. She worked in retail stores in Charleston and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Vandall Wood, on Nov. 21, 1988; her two former husbands, O.B. Wills and W.R. Kincaid; and a sister, Flo E. Wood. Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline Faye Harris of Richmond, Va., and Elizabeth Ann Tully of Oak Hill; a stepdaughter, Maxine K. Chaffins of Green Valley, Ariz.; three sisters, Mayme E. Fredericks of Sun City, Ariz., Justine Long of Ravenswood and Edith Coffman of Hinton; five grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandson. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ansted Baptist Church with the Revs. Victor Hayes and Don Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
