Register Herald Obituaries for August 23, 1999 Delmar Ball Delmar "Jabo" "Uncle" Ball, 74, of Skelton, died Saturday, Aug. 21. 1999, in the Beckley area VAMC following a short illness. Born Dec. 23, 1924, in Skelton, he was the son of the late Thomas and Dixie Justice Ball. Mr. Ball was a truck driver for 25 years at Lambert Transfer and was also a coal miner for 17 years having last worked at Stanaford Mine. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a POW for seven months. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas F. Ball. Survivors include four nephews he raised, Bill Ross and wife Tina of Bradley, Phil Ross and wife Teresa of Greenville, S.C., Jeff Ross and wife Pam of Beckley and Greg Ross and wife Melanie of Douglasville, Ga.; a niece whom he also raised, Kay Green and husband Rick of Lester; two sisters, Mary Tomczyk and Golda Moveda Ross; and twelve grand nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Larry Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley with graveside rites to be conducted by the VFW Post No. 4326 of Sophia/Midway. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Rufus 'Sarge' Clark Rufus "Sarge" Delaine Clark, 68, of Morgan Hills, Beckley, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born Aug. 16, 1931, in Mount View, he was the son of the late Watson and Mattie Thompson Clark. Mr. Clark spent his childhood at Quinwood and Beckley. He was a graduate of Crichton High School at Quinwood and attended Beckley College. Prior to entering the U.S. Marine Corps he taught school in Wyoming County. He was a retired staff sergeant with the U.S. Army, serving in Germany, Puerto Rico and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. His military career with both branches of service spanned 22 years. He was a former resident of Edgewood Arsenal, Md. and was a retired administrator from Aberdeen, Md. He returned to Beckley in 1994 where he was a member of the American Legion Post 32. He was of the Christian Faith. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Georgia Ryan and Imagene Meadows and three brothers, Archie, John and Garland Clark. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Phyllis Ann Francis Clark; a daughter, Debra Mason and husband Steve and their sons, Steven Delaine, Corey and Brandon all of Boyertown, Pa.; two sisters, Margaret Elam of Petersburg, Va. and Evelyn Murdock of Mechanicsville, Va.; and two brothers, Jimmie Clark of Hinton and Gene Clark of Naples, Fla. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with Elder Kenna Lilly officiating. A eulogy will be given by Lindsey Whitten. Committal services will be 1 p.m. in the Palm Memorial Gardens at Matheny. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Robert and Michael Crouch, Robert O. Earic Edison Edwards Earic Edison Edwards, 71, of Cross Lanes, formerly of Kingston, died Sun. Aug. 22, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born Sept. 5, 1927, in Kingston, he was the son of the late George Washington and Edith Phillips Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a self employed private investigator and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his companion, Janet Buckley of Cross Lanes; a daughter, Linda Rains of Atlanta; a son, Phillip Edwards of Marietta, Ohio; a grandchild, Taylor Edwards of Charleston; two sisters, Juanita Edwards of Bradley and Odessa Wilson of Ft. Myers, Fla.; three brothers, George M. "Matt" Edwards of Fayetteville, James L. Edwards of Southgate, Mich., and A. Thomas Edwards of Martinsburg. Services will be noon Tuesday at Tyree Funeral Home Oak Hill Chapel, with the Rev. William Shumate officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Arrangements by Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. Jesse Stuart McLain OAK HILL - Jesse Stuart McLaine, 93, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, in an Oak Hill care center following a long illness. Born July 6, 1906, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Jesse Greene and Mary Margaret Shreve McLain. Mr. McLain was a retired outside foreman, having worked for Appalachian Power Company for 42 years. He was also a lifelong member of the Jones Ave. First Church of God, Oak Hill, and was graduate of Coyne Electrical Institute, Chicago. He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell McLain; two infant brothers; seven sisters, Hallie Calhoun, Nona Gainer, Mable Ferguson, Ruth Duke, Hessie McLain, Gola Smith and Gladys Cornell. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Evelyn B. Thomas McLain; a son, Edward McLain and wife Phyllis of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Joann Burgess and husband Arthur of Oak Hill; a sister, Glenna Godby of Oak Hill; five grandchildren, Merry and husband Carl Hanning of Hilltop, Stephanie and husband Bill Barker of Jacksonville, Fla., Lyn and husband Kirk Lichty of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Rev. Jesse S. McLain II and wife Joi of Middleburg, Fla. and Mydra and husband Michael Myers of Jacksonville, Fla.; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Graveside rites and committal services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Tonya Shupe and the Rev. Jesse S. McLain II officiating.
