Register Herald Obituaries for August 26, 1999 Woodrow W. Bower ALDERSON - Woodrow W. Bower, 86, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, in a Fairlea medical center. Born Oct. 9, 1912, at Bowerıs Ridge, Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Wiley C. and Christine Belcher Bower. He was the 11th of 12 children. Mr. Bower had been a resident of Alderson since 1954 and was a member and elder of Alderson Presbyterian Church for 40 years. He was a school teacher for 40 years and was a very popular high school official for more than 25 years. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years, Annie Jane Handley Bower; three sons, W.F. Bower and wife, Dottie, of Ravenna, Ohio, Fred Bower and wife, Jan, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jim Bower and wife, Elizabeth of Lewisburg; a sister, Sally Neal of Ripley; a brother, Charles Bower of Princeton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Born Feb. 17, 1931, at Elmo, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Tompkins and Willie Clifton Sweet Tompkins. Ms. Davis was a retired operator for C&P Telephone Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Lee Davis. Duncan OAK HILL - Ward Lynn Duncan, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at his home following a short illness. Born Sept. 11, 1916, at Sun, he was the son of the late Frank and Josie Hall Duncan. Mr. Duncan was retired from Union Carbide as a head mixman following 35 years of service. He was a union member and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by a son, Fredrick Lee Duncan. Hager David Watson Hager, 74, of Beckley, formerly of Oceana, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at his home following a short illness. Born March 27, 1925, in Mary Helen, Ky., he was the son of the late Watson and Sylvia Hager. Mr. Hager was a miner and a member of First Baptist Church, Oceana. He retired from Eastern Associated Coal Corp. after 44 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed spending time at his home at Claytor Lake in Virginia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Blevins Hager; and two sisters, Myrtle Acord and Betty Baxter. Lane, 70, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, in a Logan hospital following a long illness. Born May 18, 1929, in Pineville, she was the daughter of the late James Chart and Cora L. Tilley Mullens. Mrs. Lane was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and of the Freewill Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters. Riner Anna Harbo Riner, 75, of Prosperity, died at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 1, 1923, in Welch, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Harbo and Eugenia Czarnoski Harbo. Mrs. Riner was a homemaker and former employee of Glen L. Martin Factory, manufacturing war planes during World War II. She was a member of the Catholic faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Glen Riner; and three brothers, Nicholas Tom Harbo, John Robert Harbo and Tommy Harbo. Springer Jr. SPOKANE, Wash. - George W. Springer Jr., 64, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in Spokane. Born Feb. 14, 1935, in Springfield, Mass., Mr. Springer grew up in Beckley. Mr. Springer retired as a master sergeant from the Air Force, then moved to Spokane in 1977 and began working as a computer programmer for School District 81. He was active with Meals of Wheels and the exchange program. Survivors include his wife, Renie Springer; a son, Shaun Springer of Vancouver, British Columbia; four daughters, Debra Green and Tara Springer, both of Spokane, and Yuko Shiroyama and Taka Kidokoro, both of Japan; a brother, Thomas King of Michigan; two sisters, Ann Miller of West Virginia and Kathy Smith of Ohio; and a grandson, Nicholas George Springer. Born Dec. 9, 1929, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Richard Guthrie Dunbar and Lillie Maude Williams Dunbar of Beckley. Mrs. Toney was retired from Ohio University Postal Service in Athens, Ohio, with 30 years of service and was a homemaker. She was a member of Workmans Creek Methodist Church, Beckley. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Calvin Ray Dunbar. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Roger G. Trump Beatrice Jarrell Trump, 105, of 211 Crawford St., Beckley, died of natural causes Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, in a local care facility. Born March 2, 1894, in Winifred, Kanawha County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Millard and Mary Margaret Gillispie Jarrell. Mrs. Trump was a teacher and principal for 43 years, having worked for the Raleigh and Fayette county boards of education, last teaching at Beckley Junior High School. She was a member of United Methodist Temple and had been a resident of Beckley for more than 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade H. Trump; a sister, Madelon Thompson; and six brothers, Rupert, Milton, Ralph, James, Jack and Millard Jarrell. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Betty S. Jarrell of Beckley; a nephew, Charles M. Ervin Webb Hubert Ervin Webb, 39, of Lower Sandlick, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 9, 1960, at Lower Sandlick, he was the son of Hubert Webb of Lower Sandlick Road and the late Anna Pearl Gill. Mr. Webb spent his childhood at Lower Sandlick and had been a resident of Fairdale since 1996. He was a coal miner, last working at Maben Energy. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed hunting at Wing Grove, Millbranch and Braxton County. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Webb.
