Register Herald Obituaries for August 27, 1999 Charles H. Bower PRINCETON - Charles H. Bower, 93, of 704 Old Oakvale Road, formerly of Mullens, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, in a Princeton hospital. Born March 29, 1906, at Bower's Ridge, Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Wiley C. and Christine Belcher Bower. Mr. Bower was a retired educator with the Wyoming County school system with 31 years of service. He was the owner and operator of Bower's Mini Mart, Princeton. He was commissioner of the Wyoming County Court for six years and a member of First Baptist Church, Princeton. Mr. Bower was a graduate of Concord College, Athens. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Beatrice Smith Bower; two sons, C.H. Bower Jr. and Gaylord Bower; two brothers; and eight sisters. Survivors include a son, John W. Bower Sr. of Irving, Texas; two daughters, Charlene Runyon and her husband, Tom, of Princeton and Beth Dunlap and her husband, Mike, of Dallas; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sally Neal of Ravenswood. Hager David Watson Hager, 74, of Beckley, formerly of Oceana, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at his home following a short illness. Born March 27, 1925, in Mary Helen, Ky., he was the son of the late Watson and Sylvia Hager. Mr. Hager was a miner and a member of First Baptist Church, Oceana. He retired from Eastern Associated Coal Corp. with 44 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed spending time at his home at Claytor Lake in Virginia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Blevins Hager; and two sisters, Myrtle Acord and Betty Baxter. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lillie Baxter Hager; two sons, Larry Hager of Beckley and Jerry Hager and his wife, Barbara, of Pineville; a daughter, Betty Ann Christian and her husband, Bruce, of Georgetown, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Tod Hager of Beckley, Tammie Hager of Cross Lanes, Nicole Tilley of Huntington, Vanessa Hager of Pineville, Christopher, Anthony and Maria Sottile, all of Las Vegas, Nev., and Benjamin Christian of Georgetown, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Alexis Hager, both of Charleston, and Colton Tilley of Huntington; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Lewis, 75, of 417 Lincoln St., died of natural causes Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, in a Salem, Va., hospital. Born Feb. 3, 1924, at Sun, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Alice Ware Booker. Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker and a member of Glorious Church of God in Christ, Mount Hope. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Lewis; and two sisters. Peters, 93, of Kirk Street, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, in a Princeton care center. Born Oct. 14, 1905, in Keystone, she was the daughter of the late Quincy Adams and Melinda Frances Bedsaul Maness. Mrs. Peters was a member of Kee Street United Methodist Church, Princeton, and a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob "Doc" Peters; a son, David Christian Peters; and two brothers. Survivors include two sons, Hedley Peters and his wife, Virginia, of Princeton, and Clyde D. Peters and his wife, Patricia, of Beckley; two daughters, Anna Marie Smith and her husband, Tom, of Beckley and Virginia F. Mr. Richmond was a lifelong resident of Meadow Creek, a retired section foreman for C&O Railway and a member of Sandstone Baptist Church. Springer Jr. SPOKANE, Wash. - George W. Springer Jr., 64, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in Spokane. Born Feb. 14, 1935, in West Springfield, Mass., he was the son of the late George W. Springer Sr. and Dorothea Raftery Springer. His father was sports editor of The Raleigh Register for many years. Mr. Springer grew up in Beckley. He was a 1952 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, where he served as statistician and manager of the 1951-52 football teams. He was editor of the school newspaper, The Eagle Dispatch, and an avid member of the chess club. Mr. Springer retired as a master sergeant from the Air Force, then moved to Spokane in 1977 and began working as a computer programmer for School District 81. He was active with Meals of Wheels and the exchange program. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Ione S. Springer, his maternal grandparents, Fred and Alice Raftery; an aunt, Emma Chevalier; and a brother-in-law, John Earl Miller. Survivors include his wife, Renie Springer; a son, Shaun Springer of Vancouver, British Columbia; four daughters, Debra Green and Tara Springer, both of Spokane, and Yuko Shiroyama and Taka Kidokoro, both of Japan; a brother, Thomas King of Southgate, Mich.; two sisters, Anne S. James H. Toler SUN HILL ­ James H. Toler, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, in a Williamson hospital following a long illness. Born June 14, 1924, at Sun Hill, he was the son of the late Golden C. Toler and Rosa Toler. Mr. Toler was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and of the Protestant faith. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during World War II and the Korean War. He was a life member of DAV Chapter 56, Oceana, and VFW Post 8365, Oceana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Toler, in 1991; two sons, Jackie and Curtis; a daughter, Maxine; three brothers, Azil, Ralph and Norvell Toler; and two sisters, Gladys Toler and Mabel Belcher. Toney POMEROY, Ohio - Betty Irene Dunbar Toney, 69, of 45180 Baum Addition Road, Meigs County, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, in a Parkersburg hospital. Born Dec. 9, 1929, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Richard Guthrie Dunbar and Lillie Maude Williams Dunbar of Beckley. Mrs. Toney was retired from the Ohio University Postal Service in Athens, Ohio, after 30 years of service and was a homemaker. She was a member of Workmans Creek Methodist Church, Beckley. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Calvin Ray Dunbar. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Roger G. Walker MULLENS - Sadie Elizabeth Walker, 90, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born July 4, 1909, in Harriman, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Clay Johnson and Pearl Ann Hensley Johnson. Mrs. Walker had been a resident of Mullens since 1939. She was a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Maranatha Youth Camp, Dublin, Va., having served during church and summer camp for 30 years. She was employed by the Wyoming County Board of Education as a cook for Mullens Grade School with 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark Walker; a sister, Ruth Nickles; and a brother, Ted Johnson. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Thomas and her husband, Wallace Edward, of Mullens; a brother, Paul Johnson and his wife, Lois, of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Bea Johnson of Clay City, Ky.; two grandchildren, Wallace Delene Thomas and his wife, Angela Carol, and Michael Thomas; and two great-grandchildren, Michael Delene Thomas and Noah Edward Thomas. Ervin Webb Hubert Ervin Webb, 39, of Lower Sandlick, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 9, 1960, at Lower Sandlick, he was the son of Hubert Webb of Lower Sandlick Road and the late Anna Pearl Gill. Mr. Webb spent his childhood at Lower Sandlick and had been a resident of Fairdale since 1996. He was a coal miner, last working at Maben Energy. He was an avid hunter, enjoying hunting at Wing Grove, Millbranch and Braxton County. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Webb.
