Register Herald Obituaries for December 3, 1999 Virginia L. Arthur Virginia Lee Shelton Arthur, 76, of Cranberry, died of natural causes Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at a Beckley care center. Born July 5, 1923, at Lochgelly, she was the daughter of the late Lee Shelton and Leila Clonts Shelton. Mrs. Arthur was a homemaker and a member of the Cranberry Community Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Tom Arthur. Survivors include a son, James Arthur Jr. and his wife, Teresa, of Beaver; a daughter, June Arthur of Sidney, Ky.; two brothers, Edward Shelton of Chesapeake, Va., and Roger Shelton of Fullerton, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Tate of Maple Fork; and two grandsons, James Arthur III of Beaver and Matthew Arthur of Beaver. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley, with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Majors COLUMBUS, Ohio – Barbara Jean Jackson Majors, 70, formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, in a Columbus hospital following a short illness. Born May 19, 1929, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Boulden and Vicie Hayden Jackson. Mrs. Majors was of the Baptist faith and was a graduate of Stratton High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Bluefield State College and her master's degree from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Mrs. Majors taught at Beechcroft High School in Columbus. She was the author of two books, "Letters from God," Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. She also worked as a social worker for the West Virginia Department of Human Resources. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lamar Jackson. Survivors include two daughters, Lenora Majors of Atlanta, Ga., and Tanya Majors Robinson of Youngstown, Ohio; a grandson, Bryan Robinson; two brothers, Frederick Jackson and his wife, Anna, of Beckley, and Robert E. Jackson of Pleasantville, N.J.; a sister, Olymphia Jackson of Orlando, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Bernice Jackson of Beckley; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Maynard Edna Alice Maynard, 94, of Temple Street, Beckley, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, in Beckley, following a long and full life. Born July 20, 1905, at Alpoca, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Rebecca Bishop Lester. Mrs. Maynard spent her childhood at Alpoca, where she lived for many years. She moved to Crab Orchard in 1968 and later settled on Temple Street. While living in Wyoming County she was a member of the Bud Baptist Church; since living in Beckley, she was a member of the Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren and more recently attended the Wesleyan Chapel on Johnstown Road. In her leisure time she enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Fairchild Maynard, on April 31, 1968; and a son, Gid Theodore Maynard. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include four sons, Claude F. "Sarge" Maynard Jr. and his wife, Jan, of Beckley, James Maynard and his wife, Erma, of Covel, Jesse Maynard and his wife, Jacqueline, of Bud, and Norvel Lee Maynard and his wife, Nyla, of Beckley; two daughters, Malinda Helen Arcidy and her husband, Louis, of Bedford, N.H., and Louise Hatter and her husband, Warren, of Lyndhurst, Va.; 29 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Moore was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church, Degree of Honor Lodge and the Orchard Valley Women's Club. She was a sales clerk for The Hub/Vogue Department Store and EM Payne Co. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James William "Bill" Moore; three sons, Delano, Byron and Harold Moore; and two daughters, Colleen Hensley and Audrey Grose. Born Nov. 7, 1922, in Augusta County, Va., he was the son of the late Rev. J.P. and Clara Spottswood Proffitt. Mr. Proffitt was an attorney for the Interstate Commerce Commission. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Pate, Luther, Raymond, Oliver, Princey and the Rev. John Richardson; and three sisters, Lily Worley, Hettie Brooks and Virginia Birchfield.
