Born Sept. 16, 1911, in Florence S.C., he was a son of the late Nelson James Broach and Minter Thomas Broach. Mr. Broach was a retired foreman for Long Airdox Co., Oak Hill, and a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church. He was driller and foreman with Rineheart & Dennis, the company that built Hawks Nest Tunnel. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy J. Johnson; and two brothers, Sam Broach and Alvin Broach. Survivors include his wife, Clara Mae Shockey Broach; a son, Thomas N. Broach Jr. and his wife, Doris, of Oak Hill; two sisters, Precious White of Sumter, S.C., and Evelyn Carter of Florence, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Deborah Blankenship, Karen Willis, Gerald Johnson II, Tami L. Born Nov. 25, 1929, in Minden, he was the son of the late Shelburn Silas and Bertha Gertrude Selbe Burgess. Mr. Burgess retired from Cabot Gas, Oak Hill. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict. Born March 30, 1923, in Norton, Va., she was the daughter of the late Abraham Elizabeth Gilliam Neal. Mrs. Clark was a homemaker, resident of Itmann for 46 years and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Lester Clark Sr., in 1991. Survivors include a daughter, Kay Clark Marcum and her husband, Bobby, of Itmann; two sons, Harvey Lester Clark Jr. of Mullens and Gary Clark and his wife, Kathy, of Itmann; a sister, Edith Stapelton of Norton, Va.; four grandchildren, Chris, Shannon and Leslie Clark and Kayla Marcum; and three great-grandchildren, Beau, Lucas and Devon Clark. Born April 14, 1928, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Frank Bun Lively and Effie Caroline Johnson Lively. She was married March 2, 1954, in Winston, Va., to William Joseph Clemente, who survives. Mrs. Clemente graduated from Sandstone High School. She was vice president and treasurer of the William Clemente Corp. in New York City for 15 years and later assisted her husband in operating a cattle ranch near Henley. She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Marys Home. She was preceded in death by a sister, Opal Agnes Zickafoose; and five brothers, James Frank Lively, Millard Emerson Lively, Lester Lee Lively, Claude Harding Lively and Wendell Glenn Lively. Other survivors include a son, Guy Clemente of New York City; a daughter, Vanessa Collins of College Mound, Mo.; two stepsons, Emil Clemente of Henley and Roger Clemente of Shrewsbury, N.J.; four stepgrandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Sue Ferguson of Hurricane and Geneva Alice Cadle of Rainelle. Dry HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Dr. Samuel Wilson Dry, 77, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, after a five-year battle with colon cancer. Born Sept. 10, 1922, in Norwood, N.C., he was the son of Luther Flake Dry and Annie Pauline Efird Dry. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater of Operations almost three years. He was a professional educator who served as a professor and administrator at Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Ball State University, Florida Keys Community College and Bradley University. After 20 years in education, he opened a consulting and accounting business in Hollywood named Sane Inc. After selling the business, he returned to education. First, he taught business administration classes aboard the USS Kennedy and other aircraft carriers. Later, he was an education specialist in the U.S. Army at Fort Eustis. He retired in 1989 as senior education specialist at NAS Key West. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran faith and St. Johns Lutheran Church, where he served as president of the council for several years and taught Sunday school. On Oct. 2, he and his wife, Nellie Ellison Dry, celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Tina Dry of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Susan Noden of Richardson, Texas, and her husband, David; a grandson, Eric Noden; a brother, Robert Dry of Ford, Va.; three sisters, Rebecca Medlin and Ann Eagle, both of Mount Pleasant, and Lucille Larrabee of Camden, S.C.; and a large extended family. Johnson LACKAWANNA, N.Y. – Launa May Quesenberry Johnson, 82, formerly of Beckley, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Born May 16, 1917, in Lanark, she was the daughter of the late Elva Quesenberry and Carrie Bailey Quesenberry. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker. She was a Lackawanna resident for the past 34 years and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dempsey Quesenberry; and a daughter, Cookie Biggs. Survivors include her husband, Homer Johnson; two sons, Mack Biggs and his wife, Marie, of Edgewater, Fla., and Richard of Dayton, Fla.; two daughters, Frances Lynch of Saulk Village, Ill., and Judy Lynch of Blue Jay; 22 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. McKinney EMMETT, Idaho – Eugene R. McKinney, 52, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, from a cancerous brain tumor. Born Aug. 10, 1947, in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of Ruth McKinney, of W.Va., and the late C.D. McKinney. Mr. McKinney graduated from Sophia High School and later joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1967 to 1974. May 27, 1970, he married Toni Gregory. They moved to Meridian, Idaho, after his discharge in 1974 and he began working for the Idaho Army National Guard as a helicopter mechanic. They moved to Emmett in 1995 and he retired this year from the 1-183 Aviation Battalion as an attack helicopter platoon sergeant. While serving in the Navy and the Idaho National Guard, he earned the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and was the Aviation Soldier of the Year in 1997. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was active in VFW Post 4000 of Meridian and the AmVets in Emmett. He was preceded in death by his a brother, Carl Dee McKinney. Survivors include his wife, Toni McKinney; two daughters, Laura Jean Scarberry of Milton and Tonya Marie McKinney of Eagle, Idaho; a granddaughter, Isabella Grace Scarberry; a sister, Charlotte Morris of North Carolina; mother-in-law, Letah Gregory of West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born May 20, 1912, in Abney, he was the son of the late John Howard and Ida Isabelle Cadle Parker. Mr. Parker was a farmer and lifelong resident of Monroe and Greenbrier counties. He was a member, deacon and trustee of Flat Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Alderson. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Prince Herbert Parker, Hershel Tillman Parker, James Clifford Parker, Arthur Chester Parker and Theodore Kyle Parker; and three sisters, Bertha Lee Cox, Crystal Lee Morgan and Martha Elizabeth Knapp. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Nellie Lemons Parker; two daughters, Barbara Ann Parker and Josephine Parker Johnson and her husband, James, all of Alderson; a brother, Richard Emil Parker of Alderson; a sister,, Pansy Parker Drumheller of Fairfield, Calif.; a grandson, James B. Born Jan. 25, 1924, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late John Garnet Pedro and Virginia Elizabeth Bennett Pedro. She was a bookkeeper for 17 years at the Beckley Coal Testing Laboratory. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church at Grandview and was known as "Granny" in an 11-county area while employed at the Women's Resource Center from which she retired in 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Ginny Lynn Carman of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Bette R. Sheppard-Bradford of Barre, Vt.; five grandchildren, Michelle Bales and her husband, Joel, of Rock Hill, S.C., Jonathan G. Sheppard and his wife, Susan, and Christy Dale Rainwater and her husband, Tommy, all of Charlotte, N.C., Melody D. She graduated from Princeton High School, later going to Bridgeton, N.J., to work for Owens Co. She resided at Bridgeton until moving to Blacksburg, Va., in 1977. She attended Blacksburg Christian Fellowship Church.
