Anderson PRINCETON – Lydia Frances Anderson, 100, of Athens Road, died peacefully Wednesday morning, Dec. 8, 1999, at Princeton Community Hospital. Born July 25, 1899, in Bland County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Milton and Laura Day French. Mrs. Anderson was educated in Mercer, a devoted wife, loving mother and a great friend to all. For many years she was an Avon representative in the Athens area. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Tophet (Hilltop) and a 17-year resident of Mullens before moving back to the area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Carl Anderson; brothers, Scott, Giles, Oscar, Ralph and Randall French; sisters, Zelma Hill, Minnie Cunningham, Grace Jaross and Edith Williams; and several grandchildren. Survivors include three sons, Harry Anderson of Portland, Ore., M. Gale Anderson and his wife, Peggy, of Bluefield, and Henry C. Anderson Jr. and wife, Ruth, of Mullens; two daughters, Frances White and husband, Ward, of Princeton, and Coney McAllister and husband, Theodore, of Pineville; two sisters, Viola Pennington of Princeton, and Irene Lambert of Bristol, Va.; a brother, Raymond French and his wife, Inez, of Peterstown; 14 grandchildren; and a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren. Barone Frank Anthony Barone, 85, of MacTaggart Drive, Beckley, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born May 4, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Anthony and Santa Tindiglia Barone. Mr. Barone came to West Virginia at an early age with his parents settling in Stanaford. He was a 1931 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He was formerly employed by Raleigh Baking Co. with 15 years of service. He retired from Beckley Post Office, after 31 years. His last position was postal clerk. Mr. Barone was a devout member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and had been a resident of MacTaggart Drive since 1968, coming from City Avenue. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Barone. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Anna DiCiuccio Barone; a son, Anthony A. Barone and his wife, Carol, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three grandchildren, Matthew F. Barone of Palo Alto, Calif., Rachel Ann Barone of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Jill Fugit and her husband, Capt. James Fugit of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Helen Shrodo Barone of Beckley; a brother-in-law, Tony DiCiuccio and his wife, JoAnn Culicerto, of Roseville, Mich. Burk OLYMPIA, Wash. – Elizabeth Elaine Jones Burk, 85, formerly of Lewisburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, in an Olympia hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 25, 1914, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Allen and Lula Mae Fink Jones. Mrs. Burk was an educator, having taught school in Beckley and Hinton High School, before retiring in 1976 from Alta Vista School in Bethesda, Md., with 25 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairlea, where she was active in the Mission Circle. She held membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy and Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Burk and her husband, Oscar Cerdo, of Olympia; a brother, Carl M. Jones of Seminole, Fla.; three sisters, Lorene Houchins and Opal M. Jones, both of Hinton, and Helen Costa, of Newport News, Va.; sisters-in-law, Sarah B. Smith of Hinton and Anna K. She was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Atlantic City, N.J. Mrs. Castle was a retired bookkeeper for Kraft Loan Co. in Mount Rainer, Md. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harry Jr. Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Robert E. "Casey" Connor, 50, of Beckett Hill Road, Athens, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in a Princeton hospital. Born March 6, 1949, in Grand Rapids, Mich., she was the daughter of Paul J. Connor of Lake Geneva, Wis., and Joy Connor of LaBella, Fla. Mrs. Connor had lived for many years in Wisconsin prior to moving to Mill Valley Calif. to finish her high school education. She then enrolled and received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She entered the New School of Social Research and Development in New York City, where she earned her master's and doctorate degree respectively. Prior to coming to the Athens area, she had taught at Fordham University and for the past 13 years, she was a professor of psychology at Concord College in Athens. Mrs. Connor had served on a very active level for the We Can Program in Mercer County. Besides her parents, other survivors include a sister, Melissa Connor and her husband, Douglas Scott, of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Jeff Connor and his wife, Marilyn, of Geneva, Ill.; and a niece, Kimberly Connor of Geneva, Ill. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Kathleen M. Connor will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the State Room, located in the Student Center on the Campus of Concord College in Athens, with Dr. Jerry Beasley to serve as the moderator. Dawkins, 82, of Vera Beach, Fla., and Lewisburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, in Greenbrier Valley Hospital following a short illness. Born May 10, 1917, in Parkersburg, he was the son of the late Wilson Kay and Laura Sutton Dawkins. Mr. Dawkins graduated from Parkersburg High School, attended West Virginia University and was a graduate of the Rupert School of Auctioneering. He became a professional auctioneer and later owned livestock auction markets and farms in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and South Carolina, and a Virginia thoroughbred horse farm which had produced a current winning filly "Grace of the South." He was active in the cattle industry and held the office of president of the National Livestock Dealers Association. He was awarded an honorary doctor of law degree from Marshall University. Mr. Dawkins was a board member and major stockholder of the First National Bank of Ronceverte. He was very active in the Shriners and the Jesters and Masons, supporting their fund raisers quietly and often. He received numerous awards from the FFA for his work with young men and women involved in agriculture. In 1977 he established a scholarship fund for agricultural students from Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas counties at VPI in Blacksburg, Va. He recently endowed Liberty Baptist University with a similar gift. Numerous churches and the Greenbrier Valley owe their building lots to his generosity and desire to help others. He was a member of the Mt. Mariah Methodist Church in Parkersburg, the Vero Beach Florida Elks Club and Lewisburg Elks Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine White Dawkins; three brothers, Herbert, Howard and Paul; and a sister, Eleanor D. Jamison. Survivors include his wife, Katherine Gaylord Dawkins; a son, John Kay Dawkins of Lewisburg; a stepson and daughter-in-law, George and Katherine Gaylord; two beloved grandchildren, Miss Ashley Holland Gaylord and Master Christian Richard Gaylord of Doswell, Va.; a brother, Clarence of Citrus Springs, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Born July 8, 1912, in Ashland, she was the daughter of the late Augusto and Cecilia Pietrantozzi. She and her husband owned various businesses in McComas and in Beckley, including the Giant Dollar Store and the Starlite Motel. She was a resident of McComas for many years before moving to Beckley, where she resided for 43 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pietro Leandro DeMarchi, in 1984 and three brothers, Dido Pietrantozzi, Carl Pietrantozzi, and Nello Pietrantozzi. Mary Sands Skaggs ALDERSON – Mary Edith "Priss" Sands Skaggs, 89, formerly of Charleston, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at the Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea, following a long illness. Born March 22, 1910, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Clint and Florence Gibson Sands. Mrs. Skaggs was a homemaker, attended Alderson Baptist Academy and Junior College, and was a graduate of Charleston High School. She was a former member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson, and of Alderson Presbyterian Church, Alderson, where she served in the church choir for many years. She was a member of the Alderson Music Club and the Alderson Woman's Club and was an active participant in various civic organizations within the community over the years. Taylor COVINGTON, Va. – Horace Howard Taylor, 88, of 526 E. Kline St., formerly of Detroit, and Summers County, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the home of his niece, Mary Plymale Woodson, with whom he made his home since July of 1995. Born Feb. 20, 1911, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Albert Earl and Lenora Foster Taylor. Mr. Taylor lived the early part of his life in Hinton. He retired in 1976 from Allied Signal of Detroit after 35 years of service, was a member of the Detroit Masonic Lodge No. 2, and of the Baptist faith. He was the last member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva I. Ratliff Taylor in November of 1986; two brothers, Vera Taylor in November of 1925 and Jesse Taylor in June of 1941; and a sister, Trusby Taylor Plymale in July of 1993. Besides his niece, Mary, he is survived by nieces, Nancy Plymale Craft of Covington, Va., and Barbara J.
