Register Herald Obituaries for December 15, 1999 Mabel M. Burke Mabel M. Burke, 83, of Glen Morgan, formerly of Cool Ridge, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at a Beckley care center following a long illness. Born Oct. 12, 1916, in Kegley, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Howell and Lola Willis. Mrs. Burke was a homemaker and a charter member of Beckley First Church of God, where she was a Sunday school teacher and WCG member. She had been a resident of the Beckley area most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Burke, who passed away Feb. 11, 1981; two sisters, Alice Lively and Annabelle Meade; and two brothers, Hooever and Marvin Howell. Survivors include a son, George L. Burke and his wife, Gayle, of Glen Morgan; a daughter, Thelma Burke Whitfield of Beckley; a brother, Howard Howell and his wife, Caren, of Denver; six sisters, Myrtle Davis of South Carolina, Hazel Warden of Princeton, Marie Shaffer of Anderson, Ind., Gladys Kerstetter of Fredericksburg, Va., and Margaret Cook and Evelyn Cooper of Alexandria, Va.; seven grandchildren, George Leland Burke of Oak Hill, Lori Burke Samuel and her husband, Blaine, of Midwest City, Okla., Ronald Lee Whitfield and his wife, Sandy, of Rock Hill, S.C., Rhonda Marie Whitfield Murdock and her husband, Steve, of Cool Ridge, Rowena Whitfield Hendrix of Midway, Robert Whitfield and his wife, Johnette, of Elkins and Theresa Whitfield Williams and her husband, Timothy, of Mount Hope; and 14 great-grandchildren, Samantha and Zachary Samuel, Greg, Amanda, Megan and George Ryan Burke, Ryan Newman and Alexandria Whitfield, Joseph and Joshua Murdock, James Hendrix and Charletta Whitfield, and Kimberly and Timothy Ray Williams II. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Vondie Cook and Ronnie Stapleton officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Clay Emma Marie Clay, 73, of Naoma, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born June 17, 1926, in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late John Lee and Etta Mae Ash Lee Pauley. Mrs. Clay was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alfred Clay; and a son, Junior Clay. Survivors include three daughters, Emma Harris and her husband, Carl, Etta Cook and her husband, Forest Jr., and Cynthia Clay, all of Naoma; three sons, William and Gary Clay, both of Naoma, and Dale Clay of Beckley; three sisters, Dollie Parsons of Charleston, Norma Halkias of Algonac, Mich., and Dora Taylor of Clendenin; six grandchildren, Mark, David and Carl Harris Jr., James Clay, and Yvonne and Sylvia Cook; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Armstrong Funeral Home Chapel, Whitesville, with the Rev. Ernie Rowe officiating. Singers will be The Turner Family. Burial will follow in U.S. Cook Cemetery, Pine Knob. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. Born March 23, 1911, in Corliss, she was the daughter of the late Edward Smith and Lou Moore Smith. Mrs. Hatfield was a retired school teacher who taught in elementary schools in Fayette County for 36 years. She was a member of Fayetteville United Methodist Church, Fayetteville Study Club, White Oak Country Club, Fayetteville Garden Club and Fayetteville Woman's Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Hatfield. Survivors include a sister, Hilda Adams of Fayetteville; a niece, Judy Howard and her husband, Bob, of Pittsburgh; and two grand nieces, Laura Howard of Los Angeles and Jennifer Howard of Denver. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fayetteville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gordon Humphreys officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, and one hour before services Thursday at the church. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
