Christian Sr. James Grayton Christian Sr., 71, of Glen White, died at 3:05 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born April 10, 1928, in Virginia, he was the son of the late William Crockett Christian and Ardie Hylton Christian. Mr. Christian was a retired mining inspector for the U.S. Department of Labor. He was a 44-year resident of Glen White, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Brenda Sue Christian Petrosky and Elizabeth Carol Christian; and a sister, Juanita Walker. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Hoover Christian; three sons, James G. Christian II, Ronald Lee Christian and Jason Edward Christian, all of Glen White; five daughters, Donna Gail McClairty and her husband, Larry, of Paradise, Md., Artie Mae Pierce and her husband, Roger, of MacArthur, Barbara Craddock and her husband, Gary, of Chicago, Ann Berry and her husband, Jess, of Chrystal Rivers, Fla., and Amanda Gail Christian of Glen White; a brother, Eddie Christian of Newark, Del.; two sisters, Hazel B. Buckland of Daniels and Athaleen Payne of Newark, Del.; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. There will be no services. Craigo HILLTOP - Loren Leigh Craigo, 74, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, in an Oak Hill medical center following injuries received in an automobile accident. Born April 1, 1925, in Kanawha County, he was the son of the late Elbin and Gladys Brown Craigo. Mr. Craigo was employed by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., having retired as a miner. He was a member of the UMWA of Morris Creek. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Irene Johnson Craigo, on May 26, 1999. Survivors include a son, Gary Douglas Craigo and his wife, Patty, of Mount Hope; four daughters, Sandra L. Calvert and Kathy Blaylock, both of Durham, N.C., Beverly Patel of Greensboro, N.C., and Tina Nelson and her husband, Donald, of Oak Hill; five foster children, Zelma Reid of Mount Hope, Richard Craigo and Ted Allen Craigo, both of Oak Hill, Sheila Donnally of Fayetteville and Pat Deal of Beckley; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dora Young of Charleston. Martin SMOOT - Mary Mackie Martin, 78, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at Heartland of Rainelle following a long illness. Born May 23, 1921, in Blue Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late William and Myrtle Richard Bennett. Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and a member of Smoot Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Martin; three sisters, Macel Carter, Allie Cole and Mazie McClung; and five brothers, Maynard Leslie Bennett, John Melvin Bennett, Millard Filmore Bennett, William Lawrence Bennett and George Leonard Bennett. Survivors include a son, Thomas L. Martin and his wife, Diane, of Roanoke, Va.; and two grandsons, Timothy L. Martin and his wife, Joan, of Salem, Va., and Todd E. Martin of Richmond, Va. Mary Ann Parker, 68, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at her home. Born Feb. 2, 1931, at Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Blaine and India Walker Cook. Mrs. Parker was the first female police officer for the town of Pineville and was a lifelong resident of Pineville. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Ralph, Barb, Raymond, Romeo and Orville Cook; and a sister, Ethel Eccelbarger. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Charles F. "Sparky" Parker; a son, Charles Patrick "Pat" Parker and his wife, Dannette, of Pineville; two daughters, Mary Francis "Frankie" Steffey and her husband, Larry, of Gray, Tenn., and Veronica Kay "Roni" Lamb and her husband, Jeffrey, of Brick, N.J.; a brother, Tennis F. Cook Sr. and his wife, Jeannine, of Rockview; a sister, Jessie Parker of Charleston; six grandchildren, Beth Steffey, Sara and her husband, Mickey Green, Katy and Clay Parker and Annie and Blaine Lamb; 38 nieces and nephews; 41 great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-nephew. Born May 9, 1913, in Brookfield Township, Trumbull County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Barbara Funke Powell. Mrs. Sivey was a retired dietary department employee at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill. She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. She was preceded in death by a son, James R. Dunn. Survivors include a daughter-in-law with whom she made her home, June Dunn of Carlisle; a stepdaughter, Sondra Wilson of Poland, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Smith Buren Newton Smith, 80, of North Sandbranch Road, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following an apparent heart attack. Born Nov. 25, 1919, in Sandbranch, he was the son of the late John H. and Alice Thompson Smith. Mr. Smith retired from G.C. Murphy in Beckley with 20 years of service and last worked at Ames Department Store in Beckley. He was a member of North Sandbranch Baptist Church and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Ruth McCormick Smith; seven sisters, Birdie Farley, Opal Pinson, Effie Chandler, Ruby B. Smith, Cordie Smith Starks, Goldie Williams and Ella Cheek; and two brothers, Hobert and Howard Smith. Survivors include his wife, Mable Snodgrass Smith; a daughter, Marilyn Moore and her husband, Jack, of North Sandbranch; a son, David Smith and his wife, Jane, of North Sandbranch; two stepsons, Larry Bolon of Jacksonville, N.C., and Tony Bolon and his wife, Rhonda, of White Oak; a stepdaughter, Linda Thompson of Beckley; two sisters, Stella Lively of Beckley and Margie Blanchfield of Elkton, Md.; a brother, Adair Smith of Elkton; two grandchildren, Jennifer Brown and Matthew Smith; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Brown and Rachel Brown; seven stepgrandchildren, Robert Thompson, David Thompson, Jared Bolon, Brian Bolon, Richard Bolon, Shelly Bolon and Erick Bolon; a stepdaughter, Natalie Thompson; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors.
