Register Herald Obituaries for December 28, 1999 Violet V. Chafin Violet V. Chafin, 73, of Daniels, died 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness. She was born Jan. 23, 1926, in Parkersburg. She was a homemaker, a member of the Spoken Word Tabernacle, and a Daniels resident since 1987 having lived most of her adult life in Parkersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Chafin, and a brother, Leland Hinzman. Survivors include a son, Harold Chafin Jr. and his wife Susan of Mammoth Springs, Ark.; four daughters, Rebekah Sawyer of Beaver, Yvonne Balderston and her husband Allen of Ash Flat, Ark., Kay Ross and her husband Gary of Cottonwood, Ark., and Sue Walker of Springfield, Mo.; one brother, Eston Hinzman of Beckley; 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Spoken Word Tabernacle with the Rev. Roy E. Shrewsbury officiating. Burial will be at Handshumaker Cemetery, Cowen. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley. ---------- Sandra Kay Farrell LAKEWOOD, Wash. - Sandra Kay Farrell, 46, of Lakewood, Wash., formerly of Beaver, died 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis, Wash., following a six-year battle with cancer. She was born Aug. 27, 1950, to Fred W. and Norma Taylor Stump of Beaver. She graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1968, where she was in the band, a cheerleader, and active in sports. She attended Beckley College, where she received a secretarial and bookkeeping degree. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church for many years. Other than her parents, she is survived by her husband of 11 years, LTC Thomas Farrell; a sister, Diane Fanta and her husband George of Grafton, Ohio; a brother, Jerry Stump and his wife Cathy of Glen Morgan; and four nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of Sandra's life will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Victory Baptist Church in Beaver. Friends are asked to join the family for this special time of remembering. Private committal services will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Pastor Rollan Roberts officiating. Pallbearers will be Randy Stump, Ron Whitehair, Todd Fanta, Mike Kirouac, Allen Copenhaver, and Freddie Chapman. Born Dec. 7, 1922, in Fay-ette County, he was the son of the late Macie Redden Goddard Laws and William Goddard. He had been a resident of Bellwood for the past 30 years, a retired coal miner, and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his companion of 24 years, Geneva Meadows; two daughters, Tammy Campisi of Andover, Mass., and Barbara Blume of Quinwood; one son, James Goddard of Danese; and seven grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville, with the Rev. Kenny Hayes officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Wallace and Wallace, Rainelle. ---------- Sylvia Dyer Griffith CHARLESTON - Sylvia Dyer Griffith, 100, educator, poet, author, passed away in her sleep early Dec. 24, 1999, at Arthur B. Hodges Nursing Home in Charleston. She was born June 11, 1899, at Bolair, Webster County. At age 17 she became a teacher in Webster County at a one-room schoolhouse, where she faithfully served for the next 38 years. After her husband Damon Kermit Griffith passed away in 1963, she moved to Charleston, where she became the day care director at St. Mark's Methodist Church until the mid-1980s. She was loved by the children and parents alike, who affectionately called her "Grandma." She is survived by a son, David Luther Griffith and his wife Cecilia J. of Charleston; three granddaughters, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville, with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Interment will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. He was in the U.S. Army, a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kanawha City, and a graduate of Capitol High School, where he was a member of ROTC Shooting Team, Drill Team and Golf Team. Survivors include his father, James "Jim" Hudson Jr., and his stepmother, Roxanne, of Beckley; his mother, Mary H. Slone of Kenna, and his stepfather, James Slone of Branchland; grandparents, Betty Williams of Kenna, James "Bus" and Mary Ann Hudson of Cabin Creek, and Alonzo Jr. and Elizabeth Evans of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepsister, Heather Slone of Branchland; a half brother, Jeff Allen Walker of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and stepbrothers, Brandon Shock, USAF, and Jaime Slone of Ohio. He was born July 29, 1912, to John Thomas and Etta Scott Jones in Atkins, Va. He was a retired building contractor, a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley, and a Beckley resident for most of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy B. Jones; brothers Carl, William and Ralph Jones; sisters, Mary Gold Basham, Lula Mae Jones and Wadie Waddell; daughter, Katherine L. McIntosh; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Survivors include a daughter, Joyce A. Kosnoski of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, G. Randolph "Sandy" Jones and his wife Sara of Lewisburg; a sister, Ruby G. John Paul Morrison FALLS CHURCH, Va. - John Paul Morrison, 85, of Fall Church, Va., formerly of Hinton, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at his home after a long illness. Born Sept. 12, 1914, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Roxie A Quinn Morrison. He was a graduate of Hinton High School in 1934, was retired from the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and was a skilled wood worker. He was a former member of Hinton United Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Grim Morrison; three daughters, Enola Morrison Lorinchak of Ashburn, Va., Rhea Morrison Pantlinger of Sharps Chapel, Tenn., and Darlene Morrison Crook of Browntown, Va.; two sisters, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Rogers, 77, of Clayton, Ohio, formerly of Hinton, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, in Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, after a long illness. Born Feb. 12, 1922, at Willow Bend, she was the daughter of the late Fred A. and Gladys Reed Taylor. She was a retired nurses' aide from Summers County Hospital in Hinton and a member of Hinton United Methodist Church. She had resided in Clayton for the past eight years. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.K. "Toots" Rogers, in 1974; one brother, Thurmond Taylor; and three sisters, Susie Wilson, Mary Ellen Bolton and Mildred Keister. Survivors include one daughter, Henrietta Shroyer and husband Sam of Clayton, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Mary Lou Crawford of Vero Beach, Fla.; two stepsons, Dr. Kent Rogers of Ashville, N.C., and Lt. Born Aug. 13, 1918, at Milburn, she was the daughter of the late Dave and Okie Shroyer Fisher. She was a homemaker and attended Carlisle First Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carrel L. "Jimbo" Toney, on Aug. 14, 1976; and two sons, Charles and Roger Toney. Survivors include three sons, Adam Toney, Wilbur "Ham" Toney and Darrell Toney, all of Oak Hill; four daughters, Jo Ellen Quesenberry of Forest, Va., Judy Williams of Lynchburg, Va., Kay Hewitt of Oak Hill and Barbara Srednicki, with whom Mrs. Toney resided, of Oak Hill; one brother, Dave Fisher of Glen Jean; one sister, Betty Goodson of South Hills, Va.; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Hedrick Walsh BOWIE, Md. - Betty Jo Hedrick Walsh, 76, of Bowie, Md., formerly of Beckley and Mabscott, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at her home following a sudden illness. Born Feb. 23, 1923, at Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late George Eldredge and Thelma Melton Hedrick. Mrs. Walsh spent her childhood at Mabscott, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School class of 1941. She received an associate's degree in business from Beckley College. She was formerly employed at Raleigh Grocery, Pure Oil Co. and Greenbrier Dairy. While living in Mabscott and Beckley she was a member of First Baptist Church, Neville Street, Beckley. A resident of the Maryland area for over 40 years, she attended the Saint Pius X Catholic Church in Bowie. Mrs. Walsh had a great fondness for Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Ocean City, Md. She was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Elizabeth Hedrick; and two uncles, Perry and Henry E. "Buster" Melton. Survivors include her husband, Larry Walsh; a son, John Daniel Doud of Silver Spring, Md.; a daughter, Janet Blaylock and her husband James of Walkersville, Md.; a granddaughter, Kathleen Dilley and her husband Bryan and their children Cole and Rebekah Dilley; two brothers, Gene K. Hedrick of Mabscott and James Hedrick and his wife Vi of Eighty Four, Pa. She was the stepmother of Gregory, Patricia, and Frank Walsh, Theresa McGregor, and Mary McKaig.
