Register Herald Obituaries for February 2, 2000 T.J. 'Jimmy' Ball BECKWITH - T.J. "Jimmy" Ball, 73, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a sudden illness. Born Jan. 9, 1927, in Beckwith, he was the son of the late Oscar Preston Ball and Emma Josephine Frye Ball. Mr. Ball was a retired self-employed logger, construction worker and owner of Ball's Grocery. He graduated from Fayetteville High in 1945, was a member of Fayetteville American Legion Post 149 and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Woodrow Lee, Robert Cecil, William Jennings and Charles Oscar Ball; three sisters, Frances Ball Phillips, Margaret Josephine Ball Warner and Elizabeth Ball Rader; and a grandson, Jeremy Bell. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Grunenberg Ball; three sons, T.J. Ball II and his wife, Terri Beth, of Fayetteville, Dana L. Ball and Timothy J. Ball and his wife, Kimberly, of Fayetteville; a daughter, Tara J. Ball Blackburn of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren, Emily D. Ball, Toshea J. Maxwell, Thomas J. Ball III, Heather Amanda Ball, Samantha Danielle Ball, Hillary Elaine Ball, Preseton Lee Mauritz, Dea Kristin Blackburn, Christi Nicole Bell and Cassie Brianne Ball; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Brook Maxwell; and a brother, Paul R. Gallagher CLIFTON FORGE, Va. - Pauline Johnson Gallagher, 99, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Greystone Landing, Lewisburg. Born Sept. 27, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Riley Johnson. Mrs. Gallagher was a lifelong resident of Clifton Forge. She was a graduate of the State Normal School, now known as James Madison University, and taught in the Clifton Forge school system before becoming a full-time mother and homemaker. Mrs. Gallagher was a lifetime member of Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, a past president of the Women of the Church and was a charter member of Rainbow Mountain Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carter Berkeley Gallagher. Survivors include a son, Robert Carter Gallagher of Beckley; a daughter, Betsey G. Satterfield of Lewisburg; five granddaughters, Polly Satterfield Smith and Elizabeth Ellen Satterfield, both of Lewisburg, Elizabeth Lynn Gallagher and Susan Gallagher Bell, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Anne Berkeley Gallagher of Richmond, Va.; and a sister, Sarah Johnson Hagy of Beckley. Born May 25, 1921, in Edenburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Hobert L. Wolfe and Anna Wolfe. Mrs. Harper was a retired nurse and received her training at Winchester Memorial Hospital, Winchester, Va. She was employed by Norfolk General Hospital for quite a period. She also worked at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., and had done her private duty nursing at Raleigh General Hospital and Beckley Hospital. She was a member of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert L. and Billy Wolfe; and two sisters, Jeaneva Trimmer and Hazel Bowers. Survivors include her husband, Hobert F. Harper; a son, Alan F. Harper and his wife, Debbie, of Prosperity; two sisters, Madeline Litten and husband, Don, of Mount Jackson and Maxine Zirkle and husband, Blair, of Quicksburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews in Virginia. Largent WEST, Texas - Lester L. "Sam" Largent, 84, formerly of the Largent area, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Lake Shore Village, Waco, Texas. Born Sept. 21, 1915, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Millard and Bertha Largent. Mr. Largent served his country with the U.S. Army from 1934 to 1940 before being honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. He married Mildred Rhyne Oct. 26, 1945, in Waco. She preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 1993. Mr. Largent was a police lieutenant for the Panama Canal Zone with 28 years of service before retiring in 1968. They returned to the states and lived in Whitney and West. Sam was very active with Whitney Masonic Lodge No. 335 and West Masonic Lodge No. 475, where he served as a past worshipful master. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Largent Wilson and her husband, Larry, of Vancouver, British Columbia; two brothers, Lenwood Largent of Pennsylvania and Otis Largent of West Virginia; two sisters, Colleen Slider and her husband, John, and Irene Wilder, all of Maryland; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Deiterman of West and Beatrice Rhyne of Kerville, Texas; a brother-in-law, Sidney Funkhauser of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Winding Gulf, she was the daughter of the late Clifton M. and Radiant Vaught Minnick. Mrs. Martin spent her childhood in Wyoming County and worked as a secretary at the Pentagon for several years. She worked with her husband in Martin's Welding in Falls Church, Va., and after retirement she moved back to the Beckley area in 1984. She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Martin, March 27, 1995; three brothers, Jimmy, Herman and John Minnick; and two sisters, Marie Milam and Margaert Minnick. Survivors include three sisters, Naomi Sweeney of Allen Junction and Janice Burnham and Sequitta Plosczcnski, both of Detroit; two brothers, Donald Minnick of Falls Church, Va., and William Minnick of Detroit; several nieces and nephews; and her special friend, her dog Precious. Mills, 74, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at his home following a long illness. Born Sept. 4, 1925, at Soak Creek, he was the son of the late James A. and Minta A. "Minnie" Mills. Mr. Mills was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Missouri. He worked as a coal miner at Black Eagle after being discharged from the Navy. In 1953 he moved to Michigan and resided in the Plymouth-Canton area. He had resided in Romulus since 1966. He worked at the General Motors Spring and Bumper Plant in Livonia as a truck driver for 33 years before retiring in 1987. Mr. Mills was a charter member of Wayne County Coon Club in Romulus. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles O. Mills; and a sister, Margie Cupp. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Bonnie Marie Reed Mills; two daughters, Melanie L. Haendel of Westland, Mich., and Laura A. Mills of New Boston; a brother, Wallace A. Mills and his wife, Margaret, of Mullens; a sister, Beryl Jacqueline Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and three grandchildren, Shaun C., Megan J. and Kyle G. Haendel of Westland. Born Sept. 26, 1925, in Eccles, he was the son of the late John Sanders and Stella Arnett Sanders. Mr. Sanders was retired from the Veterans Administration, was of the Pentecostal faith, a member of the Beckley Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge and the VFW of Sophia/Midway. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines who served during World War II. He was a recipient of three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Maxine Campbell Sanders; and two brothers, Norman Sanders and James Saunders. Survivors include two sons, Ronald N. "Rick" Sanders Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., and Steven W. Sanders of Sparta, Tenn.; a daughter, Rhonda L. Lilley of Midway; a stepdaughter, Patricia A. Wyatt RAINELLE - Josie Thelma Wyatt, 73, passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Columbia Greenbrier Valley Hospital after a long illness. Born Aug. 16, 1926, on Loop Road, she was the daughter of late Owen Otto and Loretta Daisy Kenney. Mrs. Wyatt had resided at Sewell Landing Apartments in Rainelle for the past three years, but was a lifelong resident of her place of birth and left behind many dear friends and close relatives in the Rainelle area. She was a lifelong member of Sturgeon Branch Baptist Church and was baptized at Sims Crossing. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Russell Haywood Wyatt; three brothers, Everette Edward, Jess Elmer and Lexie Kenney; and six sisters, 4-month-old Mary Kathryn Kenney, Edna Jane Gilkerson, Leslie Toothman, Mittie Burns, Ocie Canto and Texie Smith.
