Register Herald Obituaries for February 26, 2000 Saturday, February 26, 2000 ---------- Eugene 'Buzz' Amos ROCK CAMP - Eugene "Buzz" Amos, 66, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, following a long illness. Born March 2, 1933, at Rock Camp, he was the son of the late William and Ruth Pyne Amos. Mr. Amos served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received a Silver Star for gallantry in action. He worked for Celanese Corp. for 30 years and was a member of Lighthouse Church of God, Union. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Amos and Evelyn Turner; a brother, Otis Amos; and a grandson, Melvin Lee Amos. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Martin Amos; two sons, Wayne Martin and his wife, Carol, of Rock Camp and Melvin Amos and his wife, Cindy, of King George, Va.; four grandchildren, Chris and Amanda Martin of Rock Camp and Daniel and Jessica Amos of King George; four brothers, John, Claude, Jimmy and Charles Amos; and four sisters, Betty Vaughn, Florence Amos, Patricia McMahan and Martha Richardson, all of Lindside. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with the Revs. Bill Reed and Jimmy Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Swope Cemetery, Lindside. Ralph Brown, 86, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in Roanoke, Va. Born May 24, 1913, in Glen Daniel, he was the son of the late Robert Edward and Sarah Wyrick Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of Brown's Chapel Methodist Church, an Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Celanese Corp. He was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Brown; three infant siblings; two brothers, Eulan and Woodrow Brown; and a sister, Annie Farley. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Wilda Brooks Brown; a daughter and son-in-law, Vonda and Bill Johnston of Roanoke; two granddaughters and their husbands, Chandra and David Bratton and Anissa and John Jarvis, all of Raleigh, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Randy and Emily Bratton and Tyler Jarvis. Born Dec. 25, 1912, at Twin Falls, he was the son of the late Freeman and Clercia Belcher Canada. Mr. Canada was a 24-year resident of Hotchkiss, a retired carman with the Virginia and Norfork & Western Railroad with 10 years' service and a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Mae, Pearl and Ettie Canada, Sadie Crockett and Linda McKinney; and seven brothers, Norman, John, Edward, Ira, Marvin, Clyde and Emmett Canada. Survivors include his wife, Zettie Clay Canada; two daughters, Shirley Keaton and her husband, Robert, of Glen Daniel and Connie Snuffer and her husband, Harold, of Evening Shade, Ark.; a son, Romey Canada and his wife, Frances, of Oak Hill; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Evans Mark Robert Evans, 21, of 109 Ashley Drive, Beckley, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born July 25, 1978, in Beckley, he was the son of Frank J. and Benita Gail Osborne Evans of Beckley. Mr. Evans was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a lifelong resident of Beckley. Other survivors include his maternal grandparents, Dora Jean and Clifford G. Conner of Cool Ridge, and Hugh and Betty Osborne of Daniels; and his maternal great-grandmother, Florence Alice Pack of Cool Ridge. Born June 4, 1922, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late Elijah J. and Annie M. Shockey Bennett. Mrs. Gunter was a housewife. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Lee Gunter Jr.; and two brothers, Thomas L. and the Rev. E. J. Bennett. Survivors include a brother, William Bennett of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Locust Grove First Church of God, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Born Sept. 9, 1931, in Sprague, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Martha Jane Lilly Foster. Mrs. Meador was a retired employee of the Mercer County Board of Education, where she had served as a teacher and principal. Her last employment was at Spanishburg Elementary School. She also taught in Summers and Raleigh counties during her career in education. Mrs. Meador was a graduate of Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) and received graduate studies from West Virginia University. She was a member of Flat Top Baptist Church and was a retired member of the West Virginia Education Association. She lived most of her adult life in the Ghent area. Survivors include two sons, Michael Meador and his wife, Luella, and Clyde Mack Meador and his wife, Dadinha, all of Ghent; a daughter, Tricia Etta Meador of Beckley; a sister, Henrietta Rose of Flat Top; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Clyde Emmanuel and Andrea Meador. Committal services will be 3 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Building No. 3, Beckley, with the Rev. Jackson Barber officiating. Entombment will follow. Pitzer Carey Lewis Pitzer, 77, of 107 Lynn St., Daniels, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000. Born March 19, 1922, at Creamery, he was the son of the late James L. and Robbie Faye Smith Pitzer. Mr. Pitzer went to work at the age of 13 at the Lawrence Lilly Store in Beaver and retired after 40 years of work at Henry's Market in Beaver. He was also in the rental property business in the Beaver and Shady Spring areas. He was a member of Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 AF and AM, attended Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a brother, Glen Pitzer; and a sister, Ethel Pitzer Matthews. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Evelyn Armstrong Pitzer; a daughter, Connie Okes and her husband, Fred, of Cool Ridge; three grandchildren, Kevin Okes of Cool Ridge and Emily and Amanda Okes of Morgantown; two sisters, Ruby Blevins and her husband, Herbert, of West Jefferson, N.C., and Mary Moran and her husband, Carl, of Newark, Ohio. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Karl Reese and Orville Setliff officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Park Mausoleum, Beckley. Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
