Register Herald Obituaries for January 3, 2000 Wilbur Burl Alderman Wilbur Burl Alderman, 85, of 107 Frontier St., Beckley, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in a local hospital of natural causes. Born Dec. 18, 1914, in Raleigh County, he was the son of the late Nathaniel Burl and Jo-sephine Sutphin Alderman. Mr. Alderman was a 1938 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, where he played football and worked with his father at Alderman's Blacksmith Shop for many years on South Oakwood Avenue in Beckley. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the infantry as a sergeant in the European theater. He was working as a Greyhound bus driver when he was conscripted to serve his country for one year, but the attack on Pearl Harbor extended his time to four years and eight months. He returned to the states the day of the Japanese surrender, Aug. 16, 1945. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Bernice Alderman, Mabel Rutherford, Thelma Wills, Agnes Stemple and Wanda Griffith. Survivors include two sisters, Edna Haid of Fredericksburg, Va., and Pauline Alderman of 105 Frontier St., Beckley. At Mr. Alderman's request, his body was donated to the Gift Registry at West Virginia University Medical Center. Born Oct. 21, 1937, at Herndon, he was the son of the late Hue Dudley and Mary Church Angle. Mr. Angle was a retired compaction engineer for the Department of Highways. He was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and attended the Church of Zion at Ikes Fork. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Zada Marie Angle; a brother, Garland Angle; and a sister, Lessie Pullin. Survivors include his wife, Patty Bannister Angle; a son, Tony Angle and his wife, Julie, of Beckley; four stepsons, Jerry Bledsoe of Pineville, Gary and Marti Bledsoe of Beckley, and Mark Weaver of Charleston; one stepdaughter, Karen Widay of Oak Hill; two brothers, Frank Angle of Brenton and Chester Angle of Wyoming; three sisters, Velva Fortner of Wyoming, Pauline Miller of Pineville and Ora Bayne of Rock Hill, S.C.; and nine grandchildren. Born June 9, 1945, at Green Sulphur Springs, he was the son of Mildred Marion Ayers of Green Sulphur Springs and the late Wilie E. Ayers. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Lee Ayers. Born May 6, 1924, in Dry Creek, he was the son of the late Clinton Bone and Icie Bradford Bone. Mr. Bone retired from the VA Hospital after 26 years of service. He was a member of the Cool Ridge Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a trustee. His life was dedicated to the Lord's work and his family. Mr. Bone was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Ash. Chapman, 56, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following an apparent heart attack. Born Feb. 23, 1943, at MacArthur, he was the son of Delpha Taylor Chapman of MacArthur and the late Willie Chapman. Mr. Chapman was a retired coal miner from Maple Meadow Mining Co. after nearly 30 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA and had been a Mullens resident for the past 10 years, having lived most of his life at MacArthur. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doreen Cook. Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Joyce Harper Chapman; a son, Ronald L. Born May 16, 1917, at Pence Springs, he was the son of the late Roy Lee Garten and Regina Pearl Lilly Garten. Mr. Garten was a former bookkeeper for Greenbrier Dairy, was the former owner and operator of Artistic Upholstery and was a retired self-employed carpet installer. He was a member of the Calloway Heights Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he had served in the 108th Infantry Headquarters. He had served during WWII in locations in the Philippines, Hawaii and Guadal canal. Mr. Garten had been a resident of Piney View for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Virginia Garten, on Nov. 30, 1999; a brother, Rodney Garten; and three sisters, Pauline Miller, Virginia Gurack and Mae Jean Hart. Massie and Roxie L. Redden Massie. Her mother died when she was very young, and she was reared by her stepmother, Macie Ellen Frazier Massie. Mrs. Halsey was a 69-year resident of Rainelle, a member of Rainelle United Methodist Church, Rainelle, and a member of Rainelle Woman's Club, where she served as secretary under the leadership of the late Mrs. Claude Jarrett and the late Mrs. James Decker. She also taught piano lessons and had several pupils in the Rainelle area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Senter McCoy Halsey, July 13, 1978; two daughters-in-law, Phyllis Evelyn Baird Halsey and Martha L. Gallaher Halsey; a sister, Mrs. Artha Lee Massie Conner; a brother, Willie E. Massie; and stepbrother, O.J. Massie. "Turk" Robinson, 81, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at his home following an extended illness. Born Jan. 1, 1918, in Rainelle, he was the son of the late Elmer and Mamie Burns Robinson. Mr. Robinson retired in 1975 as an elementary school teacher, having taught at Lake Dove South and New Cumberland Elementary schools. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bolivar, Tuscarawas Valley Ruritans, Midland Trail Lodge No. 166 A.F. & A.M. in Rainelle; Mineral City American Legion and was a Navy pilot during WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine E. Bradley Robinson, Sept. 13, 1989; two brothers and a sister. Survivors include two daughters, Gerry and Richard Fox of Strasburg and Donna and Harry Headrick of Medina; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. She was a member of Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, the United Methodist Women, Williamsburg CEOS, and Greenbrier County Farm Bureau and, for several years, served on the Williamsburg Health Clinic Board of Directors. In the 1980s, she was honored as a Greenbrier County Belle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, James Henry Simmons, in 1983; a daughter, Katheryn Ruth, in 1975; a son, James William, in 1981; a brother, Leroy Thrasher; a granddaughter, Kelly Elizabeth; a great-granddaughter, Erica; and a son-in-law, Billy Hunter. Born Sept. 13, 1917, at Rock, she was a daughter of the late Addison Crockett and Alice Shutt Bailey. Dr. Smith attended Mary Baldwin College, received a medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1943 and served an internship at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. She later graduated from University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine and was a resident in Pediatrics at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Penn. She was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Bailey Lacy; and a brother, Aubrey Crockett Bailey. Survivors include a son, Alexander Moffett Smith of Peterstown; a daughter, Roberta Smith Matney of Blacksburg, Va.; a brother, Dr. Lucian Percy Bailey of Bluefield, Va.; several nieces and nephews.
