Beaver Madeline May Canterbury Beaver, 86, of 231 McBerry St., Beckley, died 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at her home following complications of Parkinson's disease. Born June 12, 1913, at Crany, she was the daughter of the late David Bert Canterbury and Nancy Roberta Stinnett. Mrs. Beaver was a former manager of a dry cleaner and laundromat. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and had been a 45-year resident of Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin C. Beaver, in 1954; a sister, Berna Harvey, in 1979; a brother, Jack R. Canterbury, in 1981; and two sisters, Ruth Greer in 1998 and Gladys Brooks in 1999. Survivors include a son, Berlin B. Beaver and his wife, Linda, of Beckley; two daughters, Sue Helen Beaver of Beckley, who cared for her, and Hilda Beaver Ingram and her husband, Blair, of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; a brother, Judge Thomas Canterbury and his wife, Jane, of Daniels; two sisters, Marie Canterbury of Beckley and Georgia Powell and her husband, Joseph, of Decatur, Ga.; three grandchildren, Robin Thomas and her husband, John, Lynne Little and her husband, Ronnie, and Brian Beaver and his wife, Christy; and four great-grandchildren, B.J. Beaver, Austin Beaver, Eve Little and Levi Little. Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Rev. Paul Blizard officiating. Born March 13, 1972, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of Elmer C. Drennen Sr. and Mae Johnson Drennen, both of Sophia. Mr. Drennen was an unemployed carpenter, formerly worked in home construction as a carpenter and served in the U.S. Army during the Gulf War. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Leo Drennen; and his maternal grandparents, Edgar and Dorothy Johnson. Other survivors include his wife, Greta Lena Lilly Drennen of Crab Orchard; three sisters, Tammy Drennen of Crab Orchard, Catherine Jones and her husband, Frank, of Bluefield, and Miranda Drennen of Sophia; and his paternal grandmother, Irene Harrah of Stanaford. Ellis EDMOND - Elizabeth Allport Stanley Ellis, 88, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in a Charles Town care center following a long illness. Born Nov. 5, 1911, at Edmond, she was the daughter of the late James and Grace Smales Allport. Mrs. Ellis was a resident of Maryland for the past 30 years and was a homemaker in her own home. She was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ellis, on Oct. 9, 1997. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Frederick of Martinsburg; two sons, William Donald Stanley of Harpers Ferry and Marvin Kent Stanley of Garden City Beach, S.C.; a stepson, Richard Ellis of Canada; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Born Feb. 23, 1924, at Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Hattie Mullins Mullens. Mrs. Ellis was a lifelong resident of Mullens. She was the great-granddaughter of Jack Mullens, founder of the city of Mullens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bill Ellis. Survivors include a son, David Mullins and his wife, Mary, of Iroquois; three brothers, Jack Mullens of Aiken, S.C., Bill Mullens of Davenport, N.Y., and Howard Mullens of Mullens; two sisters, Betty Joe King of Maben and Lou Whitt of Princeton; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Born May 4, 1920, at Jumping Branch, she was the daughter of the late Noah Lilly and Farabell "Bell" Meador Lilly. Mrs. Speck was a homemaker and a member of Cool Ridge Freewill Baptist Church. She had been a resident of Cool Ridge since 1953. She was preceded in death by two brothers and seven sisters. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, the Rev. George T. Speck; a daughter, Vivian Lilly and her husband, James A., of Cool Ridge; a sister, Rose McAlpine and her husband, Joe, of Daniels; three grandchildren, Leanna Walker, Connie Epperly, and Lorinda Burgess; and six great-grandchildren, Holly, Cindy and Amanda Walker, Dylan and Matthew Epperly and Megan Burgess. He was a 1957 graduate of Collins High School, Oak Hill. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Mr. Vest was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the White Oak Country Club. Mrs. Withrow was formerly of Rich Creek, living most of her life in the Ansted area, was a member of the Ansted congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and was a homemaker in her own home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, on March 16, 1987; and a brother, Gordon Lowell Skaggs. Survivors include four daughters, Linda Legg and her husband, Barry, of Cleveland, Ohio, Karen Smith of Oak Hill, Mona Beall and her husband, Billy, of Hico, and Mary Fox and her husband, Jim, of Cleveland, N.C.; three sons, Theodore Jr. and his wife, Paula, of Fairbanks, Alaska, William and his wife, Donna, of Victor, and Ricky and his wife, Shelia, of Hico; a brother, Shirley Skaggs and his wife, Ginney, of Ansted; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
