Born April 23, 1918, in Alderson, he was the son of the late Charles B. and Mattie E. Michelinnie Arbaugh. Mr. Arbaugh was a retired construction worker, having worked highway construction throughout West Virginia. He was a World War II veteran, having served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army. Mr. Arbaugh was of the Protestant faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Lee Bryant Arbaugh; and two brothers, John W. Arbaugh and Herbert Arbaugh. Survivors include three sons, Harold R. Beaver Madeline May Canterbury Beaver, 86, of 231 McBerry St., Beckley, died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at her home following complications of Parkinson's disease. Born June 12, 1913, in Crany, she was the daughter of the late David Bert Canterbury and Nancy Roberta Stinnett. Mrs. Beaver was manager of Dry Cleaner and Laundromat. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and had been a 45-year resident of Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin C. Beaver, in 1954; a sister, Berna Harvey, in 1979; a brother, Jack R. Canterbury, in 1981; and two sisters, Ruth Greer, in 1998, and Gladys Brooks, in 1999. Survivors include a son, Berlin B. Born Sept. 19, 1932, in Amigo, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Lura Stover Perry. Mrs. Bennett lived most of her life in Hinton, was a receptionist for the Summers County Council on Aging and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Moose Lodge. She attended Hinton Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold D. Bennett, in December 1989; and a son, Michael Bennett, in November 1956. Survivors include three sons, Arnold S. Born Dec. 16, 1935, in Sophia, he was the son of the late George Lee and Annie Victoria Thompson Browning. Mr. Browning was a resident of West Dundee for almost three years and was a former longtime resident of Hoffman Estates. He was employed by Ingram Micro of Carol Stream. Born June 14, 1914, in Red Ash, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ethel Tomlin Jarrell. Mrs. Brubaker was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Brubaker, on Feb. 29, 1984; and a son, James Robert Brubaker. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, loved and collected classical music, enjoyed the movies and researching his family history. Mr. Gunnoe was an avid bowler for many years. Hopkins LERONA - Kenneth Wayne Hopkins, 52, of Old Lerona Road, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at his home with his family surrounding him at all times. Born May 17, 1947, in Princeton, he was the son of Charles Wesley Hopkins of Athens and the late Mary Sue Edwards Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins was a 1965 graduate of Athens High School. He began working for Celanese Corp., Narrows, Va., then served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. While in service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and numerous other ribbons and awards. Upon his discharge, he returned to Celanese Corp. for a short period of time. On Dec. 1, 1970, he was employed by American Electric Power Co., Glen Lyn, Va., where he most recently was the team leader for Team D of the operations. Mr. Hopkins was an active member of Lerona United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class, a member of the Board of Trustees and member of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the new facilities located on Route 20, Lerona. He was one of the members instrumental in the formation of the new church building. He was a person who appreciated the great outdoors, anytime, especially in the fall of the year when he could hunt. He also was one who was very handy with his hands concerning remodeling and construction. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Edith M. Hopkins. Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Gloria Jean Walker Hopkins; his father and stepmother, Charles W. and Phyllis Hopkins of Athens; two brothers, Eddie Hopkins and his wife, Bonnie, of Elgood and C.W. Born Sept. 7, 1921, in Nova Scotia, Canada, he was the son of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Gillespie Napier. Mr. Napier moved from Canada at a young age, spent his childhood in Mabscott and graduated from Mount Hope High School. He resided in Mount Hope for 29 years. He was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service, serving as postmaster of Mount Hope. He was a World War II veteran, served as a volunteer worker at the Veterans Administration hospital for 20 years and was a member of the American Legion Post 32 in Beckley. Mr. Napier had been a resident of Lilly Street for the past 18 years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Pilley. Survivors include his wife, Carrie Napier; a daughter, Susan Ludwig and her husband, Jay, of Indianapolis; two sons, Sam Napier and his wife, Leigh, of Kingsport, Tenn., and Gordon Ross Napier of the U.S. Navy stationed at Norfolk, Va.; two stepchildren, Linda Haynes and her husband, Wilbur, of St. Albans and Danny Pettry and his wife, Terresa, of Beckley; and nine grandchildren. Phillips CHICAGO - Edward Hamilton Phillips, 53, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, in Chicago following a brief illness from complications of lung cancer. Born Aug. 10, 1946, in Charles Town, he was the son of Loving Hutchinson Phillips of Charleston, S.C., a native of Beckley, and the late Edward H. Phillips Sr. Mr. Phillips was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and DePaul University College of Law, cum laude. He was a member of the Illinois State Bar since 1975. He worked for many years in the office of the State's Attorney of Cook County, Ill., and in recent years he was in private practice in Chicago. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christiane du Fay de Lavallaz, in 1998. Other survivors include two sisters, Margaret B. Phillips of St. Louis and Mary T. Phillips of New York City; a nephew, Ned Blumenthal, and a niece, Shana Blumenthal, both of St. Louis; two aunts, Mrs. E.D. Wills Carlos Arthur Wills, 64, of the Dameron Section of Glen Daniel, went to be with the Lord at 7:45 p.m., Monday, Jan. 3, 2000. Born May 26, 1935, in Edwight, he was the son of the late Cora Bearfield Moles and Arthur Roland Wills. Mr. Wills was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired UMWA employee, having last worked for Consolidation Coal Co.'s Rowland Mine and Kessler Coal Co. He was of the Christian faith and attended Arnett Chapel and Artie Church of God. Mr. Wills enjoyed working on automobiles as a hobby, and his family and his vast circle of friends loved him. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Miller.
