Born Dec. 7, 1911, in Nicholas County, she was the daughter of the late William and Florence McGlothin Wells. Mrs. Bishop lived in Leivasy for the past 40 years and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Franklin Bishop, Nov. 12, 1997; a son, Robert Bishop; four sisters, Orva Wells, Ruby Wells, Dorma Wells McGuire and Redith Wells Nolan; and three brothers, Ted Wells, Lovell Wells and William Gale Wells. Survivors include three daughters, Helen Carpenter of Chicago, Loretta Casto of Nettie and Brenda Bradley of Leivasy; a son, William Dale Bishop of Chicago; 12 grandchildren, Ronald, Joseph, Jonathan, Holly, Judy, Letha, Anita, Donna, Susan, Ronnie Carl, George and Robert "Bucky"; and several great-grandchildren. Born Sept. 28, 1921, in Burksville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Walter M. Gray and Elizabeth J. Alexander. She was preceded in death in 1966 by her husband, David Ellis Brown, whom she married Aug. 16, 1945. Survivors include a son, David E. Brown Jr. and his wife, Myra, of Andover; a son, Thomas W. Brown and his wife, Mary S. Reynolds, of Louisville, Ky.; granddaughter, M.S.R. "Puff" Brown of Washington, D.C.; two grandsons, Scott Alexander Brown and his wife, Jennifer, of Fayetteville and James W. Riser III of Charleston, S.C.; and three nephews, Alexander M. Brown Lera Browning Brown, 82, of Carriage Drive, Beckley, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born March 26, 1917, in Logan County, she was the daughter of the late Frances Marion and Rose Ada Hatfield Browning. Mrs. Brown spent her childhood in Logan. She was the granddaughter of Robert Anderson "Devil Anse" and Levisa Chaffin Hatfield. She was a graduate of Logan High School and attended Logan College. She was a resident of Logan until 1950 and worked at the National Bank of Logan as head of the loan department. Mrs. Brown moved to Morgantown, where her late husband, attorney Londo Brown, was a law professor at West Virginia University for 28 years. While in Morgantown, she studied at WVU. In 1983, she moved to Florida. She was an avid golfer and a member of Black Knight Country Club, Beckley, and Beckley Presbyterian Church, where she was a steward in the church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989; a sister, Visa Carr; and three brothers, Robert Anderson "Anse," Willis and Joe Browning. Survivors include a son, Claude Anderson Brown and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Lancaster, Calif.; a daughter, Cindy K. Brown Parker and her husband, Rick, of Alderson; four grandchildren, Michael Sean Brown and Scott Anderson Brown and his wife, Kelly, and Laurie and Chris Parker; and a large extended family and a host of friends. Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Sarton, he was the son of the late Ray H. and Stella Compton Dixon. Mr. Dixon was a lifelong resident of Union, a retired carpenter and plasterer. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local No. 1911 of Beckley and Union Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He was a World War II veteran and served from 1942 to 1945. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Harland, Franklin, Robert, Donald and Eugene; and his first wife, Nellie Dunbar Dixon. Harper, 88, of 505 Woodlawn Ave., Beckley, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in a local retirement home. Born Feb. 26, 1911, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Warren Worth and Mae Harriet Hughes Koiner. Mrs. Harper was a retired school teacher, having taught many years in the Raleigh County school system. She was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church and the Beckley Woman's Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, French A. Harper, in 1997. Survivors include two sisters, Louise K. White of Louisville, Ky., and Virginia K. Snell of Southgate, Mich.; a niece, Judith W. Goodwin; a nephew, James W. White; and six great-nieces and nephews. The body will be cremated. There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Born Jan. 8, 1902, in Flat Top, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Hattie Dodd Frith. Mrs. Lowry was a lifelong resident of Summers County, a homemaker and a member of Zion Mountain United Methodist Church. She had been a member of Hill's Chapel United Methodist Church at Buck. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel T. Lowry, in 1954; a son; three stepdaughters; two stepsons; three sisters; four brothers; and seven grandchildren. Ross Jr. Thomas Alphonso Ross Jr., 78, of Glen White, died at 1:35 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born March 12, 1921, in Eckman, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Grace Wade Ross. Mr. Ross was educated in the West Virginia school system. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as Military Police No. 677 in Shreveport, La., and received decorations and citations, including the American Theater and Victory Medal. He worked as a coal miner at McAlpin until 1963 and was a member of the UMWA. Mr. Ross was a 48-year deacon most recently serving at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Glen White. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline G. "Pie" Ross, on July 12, 1998; a son, Thomas Dennis Ross; and eight brothers, Lonzo, Calvin, Clyde, Sammy, Mike, Russell, Bernard James and Walter Ross. Survivors include six sons, Stanley Daniels and his wife, Maria, of Huntsville, Ala., Marshall Ross and his wife, Juanita, of Pittsburgh, Harold Eugene Ross and his wife, Frances, of Charlotte, N.C., the Rev. Born Jan. 12, 1939, at Christian, he was the son of Edith Scites Sizemore and the late Elba Sizemore. Mr. Sizemore was a disabled coal miner and a longtime resident of Wyoming. He was well known to his community and a member of Apostolic Tabernacle Church of Lillydale. He was preceded in death by a son, James H. Sizemore Jr.; a sister, Mary Louise Sizemore; and a brother, leonard Sizemore.
