Register Herald Obituaries for January 11, 2000 Thomas W. Adkins Thomas Wiley Adkins, 72, of Beckley, died Sunday, June 9, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 1, 1927, at Shady Spring, he was the son of the late Clark and Martha Taylor Adkins. Mr. Adkins was a former representative for United Life Insurance Co. and Peoples Life Insurance Co. He was previously employed as a sales clerk for Montgomery Ward. Mr. Adkins was a member of St. Mary's United Methodist Church, Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 AF and AM, Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, VFW Post No. 4326. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and a lifetime resident of Raleigh County. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jordan Adkins, killed in action during World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa A. Robbins and her husband, Joey K., of Moore, S.C.; a brother, Dempsey Adkins and his wife, Marie, of Beckley; three sisters, Juanita Quesenberry and her husband, Earl, of White Oak, Pauline Cochran of Greensboro, N.C., and June Carnall of Abingdon, Md.; six nephews; three nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Born May 28, 1911, in Fulton County, Ill., he was a son of the late Edmund and Annie Lewis Ayres. Mr. Ayres had been a factory worker, coal miner and retired teacher at Chapmanville High School. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viona Ayres, on April 6, 1991. Survivors include a daughter, Jean Campbell and her husband, Dean, of Horsehead, N.Y.; a brother, Tom Ayres of Florida; a sister, Isabelle Boyd of Michigan; and two grandsons, Mich-ael and Ronald Campbell, both of Horsehead, N.Y. Bailes SCOTT DEPOT - Bertie Compton Bailes, 74, formerly of Montcoal, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at his home. Mrs. Bailes was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir. She was retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education as teacher at Marsh Fork High School and was a former member of the Scott Depot Extension Homemakers. She was a 22-year resident of Scott Depot. Survivors include her husband, F. Ray Bailes; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Kenneth E. Blake of Scott Depot; two sisters, Annabelle Lu of Bel Air, Md., and Mae Stewart of Hurricane; a brother, Earl W. Compton of Montgomery Village, Md.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Daisy Bolen. Chambers MOUNT HOPE - Hattie L. Chambers, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 14, 1910, at Burnwell, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Augusta Dheal. Ms. Chambers was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God, Cleveland, Tenn., since 1947. She faithfully served Christ as her savior since the age of 7. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Chambers; and a son, Macarthur Chambers. Survivors include four sons, Howard Chambers of Eden Prairie, Minn., Robert M. Chambers of Hopewell, Va., David Chambers of Maple Fork, and Gary Chambers of Maple Fork; a daughter, Nancy Williams of Hopewell, Va.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Cook MATHENY - Lessie Mae Cook, 69, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Sept. 14, 1930, at Ashland, she was the daughter of the late Vergie Belcher. Mrs. Cook was a homemaker and a member of the Oceana First Church of God and had lived most of her life in Wyo-ming County. She enjoyed spending much of her time with her granddaughter, Charla. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma Hanshock, Vada Brown and Viola Pelhman and Grace Sneed; a brother, Friel Burks; a stepson, Roger Nolan Cook; and an infant daughter, Kathy Lynn Cook. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Raleigh N. Cook; a son, Lloyd N. Cook of Matheny; a daughter, Diane Meadows and her husband, Charles, of Oceana; two stepsons, Jim E. Cook and his wife, Judith, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Ronald N. McGraw ANSTED - Hazel Elaine Cole McGraw, 84, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the home of a daughter, Carol Hankins and her husband, Clinton, and grandson, John, with whom she made her home, following a long illness. Born March 18, 1915, at Sugar Creek, she was the daughter of the late Frank Cole and Leota Skaggs Cole. Mrs. McGraw was a lifetime resident of Ansted, a member of the Ansted Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. McGraw, on Oct. 30, 1965; a brother, Sherman Cole; a sister, Kathleen Bibb, and a son-in-law, Dickie Hess, on July 29, 1996. Other survivors include daughters, Joyce "Toby" Keithley of Ansted and Silt, Colo., and Ruthe Hess of Oak Hill; two sons, James McGraw and his wife, Pat, of Ansted, and Clinton "Pete" McGraw and his wife, Sharon, of Ansted; five sisters, Elizabeth McHenry of Gallipolis, Ohio, Nellie Eades of Ansted, Inez Eades of Ansted, Ada Mable Wilson of Victor, and Mary L. McGuigan WESTOVER - Jean Ballard McGuigan, 71, of Bound Circle, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at her home following a long illness. Born July 29, 1928, at Ivy Dale, she was the daughter of the late Captain S.C. and Opal Miller Ballard. Mrs. McGuigan was a graduate of Hinton High School and attended West Virginia Business College. She was retired from the Bank of Raleigh in Beckley. She was a lifelong supporter of the WVU Mountaineers and a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Morgantown. Survivors include her husband, Jack McGuigan; a daughter, Jean Ann McGuigan of Westover; and a son, Doug McGuigan of Elkins. Nickell Ruth Doss Nickell, 87, of Beckley, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Hilltop Nursing Home following a long illness. Born Dec. 3, 1912, at Waiteville, she was the daughter of the late Clar-ence M. Doss and Martha Jarvis Doss. Ms. Nickell was a retired school teacher. She taught in Lubbock, Texas, Monroe County, Greenbrier County and Raleigh County, where she retired. During World War II, she lived in Ronceverte, Pine Bluff, Ark., and Lubbock, Texas. She attended high school in Monroe County and attended college at Alderson Baptist Academy, Alderson, Texas A&M, Texas, and Concord College, Athens. She was raised and grew up in Sinks Grove. She was very active in Beckley Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of Circle No. 1, Women's Bible Class and Ambassador's Class. She was a supporter of WSWP-TV and the Youth Museum. She was a member of Flowering Hills Garden Club, Beckley Women's Club, Christian Woman's Club and West Virginia Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd B. Nickell; two brothers, Bowman Doss and Armon Doss; and a sister, Elinore Doss. Survivors include a son, Stephen B. Nickell and his wife, DeLane, of Beckley; a sister, Alma Carter of Mount Hope; three grandchildren, David A. Smith of Arlington, Va., Rebecca D. Smith of Beckley, and Kevin D. Born June 8, 1909, in Farnhurst, Del., she was the daughter of the late John and Daisy Reasin Myers. Ms. Roseblock had been a resident of Layland for the past 26 years, was a member of the Chestnut Knob Christian Church of Layland, and was a homemaker. She was retired from Drexel University of Philadelphia, Pa., where she had served as assistant dean of the school for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Moran Lee Roseblock; twin daughters, Janet Kerrigan and Jean Bock; a son, Edward J. McCafferty; a granddaughter, Mary Ellen McCafferty; and a grandson, James D. Morris. Survivors include two sons, Charles McCafferty and his wife, Gerrie, of Riverview, Fla., and Paul McCafferty and his wife, Clara, of Layland, with whom she lived; 30 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Showalter was a retired coal miner and was a member of the VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill. He was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran. Survivors include two sons, Charles Showalter of Oak Hill and Joe Showalter of Big Springs, Texas; three brothers, Kirt M. Showalter of Lorain, Ohio, Harry B. Showalter of Elyria, Ohio, and Paul J. Mrs. Spade was a homemaker who loved to spend time outdoors raising flowers and was especially fond of wildlife. Mrs. Spade was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Boomer Baptist Church, Boomer, and she attended numerous churches in the Summers and Greenbrier County area that her husband pastored over the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Donald F. Spade; a daughter, Betty Jo Spade; two sons, Tommy Spade and the Rev. Carl Dwight Spade; a granddaughter, Donna Spade; and several brothers and sisters.
