Mrs. Hamons was a homemaker, a former employee of The Greenbrier hotel, and attended Apostolic Jesus Name Church of Rainelle. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Faye Boyce and Kathryn Boyce; and a brother, David Kessler. Survivors include her husband, Edward Hamons; three daughters, Carmen Rich of Orient Hill, Sue Cornell of White Sulphur Springs and Penny Hughart of Lewisburg; three sons, Roger Lee Hamons of Rainelle, George Hamons of Orient Hill and Billy Ray Hamons of Rupert; three sisters, Betty Bennett of Rainelle, Shirlene Tucker of Lewisburg and Mildred Owens of Rupert; two brothers, Ray Lane of Meadow Bridge and Dubree Lane of Baltimore; and 14 grandchildren. Born Aug. 1, 1926, in Rhodell, she was the daughter of the late Walter Albert and Bessie Mae Cole Meadows. Mrs. Harvey spent her childhood in East Gulf, Epperly, Rhodell and Flat Top. She received her formal education in Raleigh County, where she was a lifelong resident. She was of the Baptist faith. She worked for a short time at Pinecrest Hospital prior to marriage and then devoted her life to homemaking and motherhood. She loved housekeeping, gardening and canning. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Carlos Wilton Harvey, whom she missed greatly, on July 23, 1998; five brothers, Walter Albert Meadows Jr., Emmit W., Lloyd C., Elliot E. and Clarence D. Meadows; and a sister, Bernice L. Meadows. Survivors include a daughter, Jewell Carlene Harvey Field and her husband, Dr. Charles D. Born July 24, 1914, in South Nuttall, he was the son of the late Rev. J.P. Matthew and Ellen Biglow Matthew. Mr. Matthew was a retired miner and West Virginia's first black state mine inspector. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member of the church choir, chairman of the Deacon Board, and was superintendent of Mount Zion Sunday School, where he was emeritus. He was past president of New River District Music Convention and West Virginia Baptist State Music Auxiliary, treasurer of New River Ministers and Deacons Union, trustee of West Virginia Baptist State Convention, member of West Virginia Baptist State Chorus, member of New River Association, board member of the Fayette County Health Department, member of the Fayette County Red Cross, member of Region IV Planning and Development Council, and the Fayette County AARP, board member of the Oak Hill Building Commission, Oak Hill city councilman for 12 years, board member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, board member of Area Agency on Aging, master of Hiram Abiff Lodge No. 20, Harvey, and past grand patron, Order of the Eastern Star, State of West Virginia. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Waverly, James, Phillip and Titus Matthew; and three sisters, Viola Ratliff, Helen James and Mable Crider. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Ryan McMillion and Theodore Roosevelt McMillion. Born Aug. 3, 1910, in Floyd County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Alderman and Malinda Hylton Alderman. Ms. Meadows was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel Frank Hayden; her second husband, Azel Meadows; a son, Danny Von Hayden; four brothers; and five sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, James G. "Dusty" Miller, on June 27, 1996. Born June 7, 1939, in Kilsyth, he was the son of the late Bertha Murdock Steplowski. Mr. Murdock was a disabled construction worker and a member of Mount Hope Christian Church. He was an avid walker. Nickell Ruth Doss Nickell, 87, of Beckley, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in a Hilltop nursing home following a long illness. Born Dec. 3, 1912, in Waiteville, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. Doss and Martha Jarvis Doss. Ms. Nickell was a retired school teacher. She taught in Lubbock, Texas, Monroe County, Greenbrier County and Raleigh County, where she retired. During World War II, she lived in Ronceverte, Pine Bluff, Ark., and Lubbock. She attended high school in Monroe County, and attended college at Alderson Baptist Academy, Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, and Concord College, Athens. She was raised and grew up in Sinks Grove. She was very active in Beckley Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of Circle No. 1, Women's Bible Class and Ambassador's Class. Ms. Nickell was a supporter of WSWP-TV and the Youth Museum. She was a member of Flowering Hills Garden Club, Beckley Woman's Club, Christian Woman's Club and West Virginia Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd B. Nickell; two brothers, Bowman Doss and Armon Doss; and a sister, Elinore Doss. Survivors include a son, Stephen B. Nickell and his wife, DeLane, of Beckley; a sister, Alma Carter of Mount Hope; three grandchildren, David A. Smith of Arlington, Va., Rebecca D. Smith of Beckley and Kevin D. Born Dec. 28, 1914, in Matoaka, he was the son of the late Floyd and Rosie Woods Nuckolls. Mr. Nuckolls had been a 47-year resident of Bud, was of the Baptist faith and a retired coal miner, having last worked for Semet Solvey at Tralee with 23 years of service. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Hattie Moore Nuckolls; three daughters, Janice Marsh and her husband, David, of Mullens, Alice Marsh of Alpoca and Norma Whitt of Chesapeake, Va.; four sons, Blaine Nuckolls and his wife, Marilyn, of Greenville, S.C., Larry Nuckolls and his wife, Cathy, and Shelby Nuckolls, all of Bud, and Wayne Nuckolls and his wife, Cindy, of Mullens; a brother, Roy Nuckolls of Princeton; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews. Salinger, 45, of 122 Sandstone Drive, Beckley, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999. Born Aug. 13, 1954, Steve was a highly educated man: a Ph.D. in Psychology, Auburn University, 1989; M.S in Psychology, Auburn University, 1982; M.S. in Communication, Auburn University, 1979; and B.A. in Communication, Florida State University, 1977. Steve was a full-time professor at The College of West Virginia, Beckley, from 1995 until the time of his death. He taught 11 undergraduate courses in the fields of psychology, statistics, and research methodologies. He team-taught courses in occupational therapy and the Physical Therapist Assistant Program. He developed many new courses for the college and was actively involved in researching course work for child and adolescent psychopathology and developing alternative strategies for non-pharmaceutical identification and treatment of child and adolescent behavior problems. From 1992 until the present, he was a reviewer for Brooks/Cole Publishing and HarBrace Publishing. He reviewed textbook chapters in the areas of industrial psychology and theories of personality. He taught at Auburn University from 1989 to 1995. He taught nine undergraduate courses ranging from Introduction to Psychology to Theories of Personality to Statistics and Quantitative Methods. He taught graduate courses as well, ranging from Quantitative Methods to Ethics and Professional Issues in Psychology. He was an adjunct faculty member of Troy State University, Phenix City, Ala., from 1994 to 1995, and a computer consultant, Psychology Department, Auburn University, 1984-95. Steve had an extensive educational background that entitled him to be addressed as Dr. Salinger, but preferred to be addressed as "Steve." He was a dedicated teacher who combined intellectual integrity with humor and compassion toward his students. He respected the journey of the individual in mastering the material presented in class and was consistently open to new ideas and approaches. Steve is loved and remembered by family and friends for his keen sense of humor, intellectual curiosity and his extensive sense of compassion toward those he perceived of as in need. He was actively involved in the lives and interests of his family members. Survivors include his parents, Ruthann and Arthur H. Salinger of Clinton, Mo.; brothers, A. Wickline Norita Sarah Taylor St. Clair Wickline, 76, of Sophia, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at a Hilltop care facility following a long illness. Born May 12, 1923, in Montgomery, she was a daughter of the late Stella Pruitt. She was raised by her adoptive parents, the late Charlie and Belle Taylor. Ms. Wickline was a homemaker and a member of Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren. She was a member of Midway VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a 40-year resident of Sophia. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray St. Clair; her second husband, Earnest St. Clair; and a brother, Glen Taylor. Williams OAK HILL - Nannie Julia Sims Williams, 92, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in Plateau Medical Center after a short illness. Born April 14, 1907, in Clifftop, she was the daughter of the late John and Susie Walter Sim. She was the last of her father's 19 children. She was a former state president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and she organized the first Youth Temperance Council in Oak Hill. She also edited the state newsletter for the Temperance Union, and she attended three world WCTU conventions where she was a delegate. Mrs. Williams was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church, where she was also a member of the Shirley Donnelly Sunday School Class, taught Sunday school in the Junior Department and was a member of the Ruth Thurmond Circle. She was the first woman to serve as moderator of the Fayette Association of American Baptist Churches and to serve on the State Board of the West Virginia Baptist Convention Executive Board. She also organized her local Church Women United Branch and served as president. She was a charter member of the Redbud Garden Club, and she attended the State Miners Convention as auxiliary president and lobbied for better working conditions for coal miners. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly John Williams, on May 19, 1980; and a son, Mark Gene Williams. Survivors include her sons, Kelly Ross Williams of Oak Hill and Franklin D. Williams of Tornado; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
